The club has officially locked in our list:  "The Demons will have 39 primary listed players and six rookies for the upcoming season"  Demon List

The updated player details are:

I've assumed Corey Maynard and Kade Chandler contracts are for one year.  If anyone has any other info or corrections to above please advise.

Its great to see so many of our young guns reach the 50-100 game range.  Bodes well for us as they can only improve with more games under their belt and cohesion from playing together.

Mods, could you please unpin the 2018 thread and replace it with this.  Thanks.

The Roar has produced player list analysis:  Team Profiles

The Average isn't the best measure;  I prefer The Mean Median.  Nonetheless, the Roar tables are a good indicator of each team.

I was a bit surprised to see Collingwood so high in the age profiles.

The likes of Lewis and Jones are raising our age profile somewhat.

For us to finish 4th in 2018 when on average age we were 9th and average experience we were 12th shows what a mighty effort it was by the club.

An interesting comment from the article:  "Overall the numbers hint at a few possible conclusions, one being that putting heavy 2019 expectations on the likes of Melbourne, Fremantle and Essendon because of their notable trade period recruits might be a little premature.

Of these three sides, only one – Essendon – is in the top eight for age, and they are eighth. None is in the top eight for experience.

That’s not to say that these lists aren’t capable of achieving great things in 2019, but instead that they are still some distance from hitting their high-water mark in terms of talent maturity".

Nonetheless, the expectations on us will indeed be 'heavy' and we will rise to the occasion!

Edit:  change 'Mean' to 'Median'

Average and mean are the same thing, I assume you meant median.

Yes need to get new deals for Melksham, Salem, Weideman and Neal-Bullen. 3 year deals for each of the blokes imo.

Lewis Final year in 2019. Let’s get the premiership and send him out in style

As they only have 1-year deals, Maynard, Garlett, Wagner-J and Jkh all need to show improvement to stay on board.

Garlett just needs to find his desire once again and he’s best 22.

Are you sure May will be 31 at end of season?

Not sure JJ's age is correct also.

If you insist .... Weideman and Jordon both spelled incorrectly.  ;)

Jordon is 17 at the time of thedraft meaning he is 19 at the EOC however in 2018 he will turn 18

No need to delete - its a good time to clarify the player's age shown is as at the end of their contract.

Thanks to all for changes.  I will do them when next I update the table, which probably won't be long since the club would want to sign up a few players soon rather than later.

Be surprised if Lewis is playing if we do as you say. He was average last year and should be worse with another year under his belt.

The big one for me on that list is Weideman.  While we are not privy to how he is feeling, I think the club has done a terrific job at developing him and getting him back to full fitness after the injuries he suffered as a junior.  Hopefully he sees this and is keen to sign a long term contract with the club, as we are now putting plenty of faith in him with the loss of Hogan.

You would be pretty confident in some of the other main players, like Melksham and Salem, that they will re-sign sometime during 2019, but Weideman is the key one for me.

Nit picking (sorry), but I think Corey Maynard has played 2 games, one in 2017 and one this year.

The AFL website is reporting that we have one rookie spot left that we are likely to fill with a SSP list player (in addition to Wagner).

Quote

Among the players in the mix could be multiple state league medallists Mick Gibbons, Mitch Grigg and Jye Bolton, Casey Demon Jay Lockhart, key-position prospect Hayden McLean, who trained at St Kilda, and late-blooming South Fremantle onballer Marlion Pickett.

There is also a chance clubs will keep a spot up their sleeve for next year's mid-season rookie draft, but industry sources say it is unlikely any team would enter the season one player short.

Updated for Melksham signing on till 2022.  Its great that he has signed up again as he has turned into a very valuable player, somewhat unexpected at the time he was recruited.

We still have one list spot and it looks likely that if it is filled will be in the mid season draft.  Gives the club a chance to see how potential target players go in their respective leagues before committing.

I would think the club is working on contract extensions for Salem, Weideman and ANB as we speak.

I do like what we have so far in the 2021 and beyond columns.

I would like to see Frost, smith and stretch  added to the contract extensions. Jones will be the most interesting.

Nice post and quite revealing. As for the Filth, it is very sad (for them) that age is creeping up on their experience base and with that, a few years  (the more the better) in the doldrums could possibly be a consideration and outcome for/of this list. The cynic in me thinks this is going to be a test for their injury management and for their list refreshment in order to be competitive.

Hurrah! This is a very prominent in my mind, too. It shows that something very good is happening.

I agree, although they might wait with Frost, there's a lot of competition for the spot he's best at.

I reckon that unless Jones is badly injured during the season then he'll be put on year by year contracts, but I'd say he's got another 2 seasons after this

Thanks.

Here is the update for Salem (assuming the proposed 2 year contract extension eventuates).

Salem has been limited to 70 games injury and form issues so he is yet to reach that sweet spot of 100-150 games.  His best is yet to come - delightful prospect.

Would expect Weideman to sign up again but not in a hurry as he would understandably like to prove himself to improve his contract value.

The other that may take some time is Jones but in his case it may be injury issues which delay a contract.  Understandably he would be looking for several years.

A few others OOC this year maybe on their last chance if they can't break into the senior side for a regular game as we have had some good recruits in the last few years who will put pressure on those guys.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
