My grand final dilemma (carn maggots!)

Recommended Posts

Frankly I'm getting  a little tired of suffering premiership envy at this time of year. I had my worst case when the Bulldogs won. Hard to confess that perversely I wanted them to lose.

My favourite second team is GWS for the simple reason that their wins mean nothing.

Do I care this weekend... probably not... Even if they lose Collingwood will be up and about how well they did this year and will be unbearable next year. West Coast... used to like them but after the drug revelations they have gone down in my eyes.

May just follow the Storm and hope Slater beats the rap :)

This has been my thinking for a while. I am sick and tired of cringeworthy Grand Final weeks and Grand Finals.

I got on board with the Bulldogs story after they won it but in the lead up and during the game I was barracking for the Swans. However my worst case of this feeling was last year. It was really hard to cop Richmond, a team that had been as mediocre as us for the last 30 odd years break through the glass ceiling first. I remember thinking the only thing that could match this or be worse would be if the filth did it.

For once if we are not there I’d like to see a completely inoffensive Grand Final. I would have killed for a West Coast v GWS game. I am not one of these people who wants a Victorian club to keep it in Victoria. I know the footy purists would hate it but who cares.

It's the triumphalism of Collingwood supporters that bothers me. I remember watching the 2010 Grand Final parade on TV. Once the captains had their photo taken holding the cup together it was time for each captain to speak. When it came to Riewoldt's turn to speak the Collingwood supporters started to sing their stupid name in that nauseatingly slow chant they do. It drowned out much of what Riewoldt had to say.

That to me encapsulates something very immature and unpleasant about their approach. They don't simply enjoy their team's success and celebrate their win, they need to turn it into something else, something more, like someone natural order has been restored. Like there is no room for anyone's else. It's a collective immaturity that's hard to tolerate - I've given away my GF seat because of it.

That being said, when I ignore each team's supporters, each side has so many players who are good to watch and play the game terrifically well. It might just be and I hope it is, a classic match of the hardest and most skilled footy we've since all year. Here's hoping anyway.

I have this dilemma as well.

My very nice, sympathetic Collingwood supporting but Melbourne member husband tells me that he is trying his best to get me a ticket to go with him to the GF.

I really, really do not want to go as I really despise Collingwood and dislike that American bloke plus I really dislike WC. I have a zero care factor about this game.

We go overseas the Monday after the GF so I am going to invent a crisis at work that needs my undivided attention all day Saturday and give the game a miss altogether. Think I will take myself shopping a buy a consolation prize for our team not making it.?

Oh dear. Just found out I am definitely going to the GF?. My husband moved heaven and earth and now I am going to some sort of Collingwood luncheon, will have to dress up and I am supposed to be excited. He has even organised a vegetarian lunch for me.

God help me.....

Book yourself into a therapist. And on Saturday bong yourself out before going to the football as it might help you escape the reality of your situation.

You won't have to dress up in Collingwood colours will you? That would be awful.

Jane, it’s called doing your duty!

No doubt you would do the same for your Hubbie if it was Dees v Tigers.

But doing your duty can be tough. It’s a test of character.

I know. I have a Collingwood supporting wife. Since Friday night   i have had to remind myself of my marriage vows. I did not include an exemption clause relating to my wife’s footy allegiance.

hmmmm.....shouldn't "dressing up" for a collingwood event be more an exercise of "dressing down"?

Disappointed that you haven't converted her.  If I managed it anyone can.   Admittedly she wasn't too zealous so it wasn't that hard. She was just influenced by being a neighbour of Rose back in the dark ages.

I hate the filth. It was really driven home by the actions of the wife of a friend. She's a filth supporter.

After Demons missed out on the finals last year, the miserable cow posted on her FB page that the best thing about the filth winning (Round 23) was that it caused Melbourne to miss the finals. Taunting/unpleasantness of the highest order. B@#ch!

Ideally the filth would lose by 1 point with a kick after the siren.

I'm an MCC member so I can go to the GF. I've been to the last 15 in a row. Tempted not to bother this year. So disinterested.

Had a similar situation on QBH this year with the wife of my friend! Wonder if we have the same friend ?

It threw a petrol bomb on a fire that had simmered in recent times.

Anyone have a spare ticket to the granny?

I missed out in the AFL members allocation because all the Collingwood members took them. I’m really upset to  miss the game. In fact I took the missing out on a ticket way harder than losing to WC.

Even as a diehard Melbourne supporter, I’m desperate to attend the game and haven’t missed a grand final since 2003.

Willing to pay a moderate amount of money for the ticket.

(yeah I knows there’s a 0.00001% chance anything will come from this)

Wow, I can’t believe you’re that dismissive of getting a grand final ticket.

I am desperate to attend the game (missed out via AFL members), even as a die hard MFC member.

Naff all interest in any GF that the Eagles play!  Their smug supporters are spoilt and get to see their team win every other week on home turf.  Hope they get backsides taken to the cleaners and all their smug numpties go home jacked off with less money in their pockets!!!

This is a really strange thing to say on a forum full of hardcore MFC fans who were still gutted over the result. Sound more like an all round fan of the game than a die hard Melbourne fan.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
