5 minutes in you could see the game plan was off... Completely out coached. The most disappointing aspect was you could clearly see we’re playing to some other BS game plan. We didn't execute our gameplan.  Coaches tried to mix it up when things started going badly.  Our gameplan is not to lose contested possession and not tackle.  That's what happened and who knows why.  Coaches tried everything, including throwing TMac back in the first quarter to stop the onslaught.

I want to know how 18 (22) players can all play so badly at the one time for a sustained period of time. 

Big Max said in his article on sunday that the team was not ready for such intense pressure. 

Why weren’t they? It was going to be there

where was the preparation at? What did the Coaches do?

the 2nd half is irrelevant. Meth Coke had achieved their goal

There are so many small things that can lead to a debacle like Saturday in hindsight.  I suspect Max had to fill some news and didn't know what to write.

tmac was thrown back when the game was all over, needed to move him earlier- the 3rd goal wouldve been optimal time for this, even throw gawn back mightve helped

That is a terrible indictment on preparation if true.

I know it is. I was shocked. I thought we had come further than that. 

A Preliminary Final is all out war, the way Meth Coke attacked the game was no suprise to me.

I'm sure they will.  Tired, over-confident, complacent, happy with year, who knows.  All I know is they haven't lost contested ball all year, were smashed at it, and unlike Hawthorn the week before WC made them pay big time.

The loss to me was pretty much the story of our year, play a ripping block of games for 4-6 weeks then put up an absolute stinker, just a shame that stinker was a preliminary final but rather that then do it in a grand final, we will be fine just need more consistency and experience

From experience of reading footy media, giving fans this line is like waving a red flag to a bull.

It may have been true and there may have been little we could have done to get ready with the experience we had but no-one ever wants to hear that a side couldn't get ready for one of the biggest matches of their life. Hopefully we'll be better equipped to handle it in future.

I would have thought that they would have prepared properly before .... not have to discover they hadn't after !!

I find these sorts of comments really frustrating, as I'm fairly certain there is no response that would change your conviction, nonetheless here goes...

Let's assume that they did prepare 'properly' as they did for the previous two finals. 

Does preparing properly mean that a whole range of things that occurred (missed handballs, slipping over, poor tackles/pressure etc etc), doesn't occur?

Also, what does preparing properly look like to you @beelzebub in your day to day? Have you ever prepared properly, but because of someone else (or a range of someone elses) things didn't go the way you expected.

Sometimes [censored] happens, and its got SFA to do with the preparation, it all to do with the execution under pressure.

And sometimes (actually every time) exposure to an uncomfortable experience reduces the stress for the next time...

It's to be expected to some degree that this happened as the players are a young young team, with no knowledge of playing finals...and probably had spent most of their petrol tickets over the previous 5 games.... 

I vehemently disagree with the 'preparation' problem...its too myopic.

Oh please... not the tired and young story again.

We were in  a prelim. It was there for the taking and we fluffed it.

Hopefully next year is better but admit it.... Saturday was the worst performance of the MFC for 2018.

Totally admit it... no issues there @Diamond_Jim - it's not just about preparation though, that's far too reductionist.

Because it is not the reality of elite sport...that's why not. Because MFC don't operate in a vacuum, other teams improve for a variety of reasons, from technical, to tactical, to age, to experience, to what staff the bring on, to what players they bring, to the vagaries of umpiring, to how many times to effing play at kardinia park... etc etc

Top 4 is a pass mark. But i'd like to distinguish between expectations vs hope. 

For all the reasons listed before, I'd hope we'd get top 4 - and I'd expect we comfortably make the 8, considering learning for the year and the demographic of our club. 

If we don't - it's not because 'we haven't learned', or thoroughly gone through things forensically', I see that as too simplistic.

Setting a goal is not setting a standard, that's setting an expectation...it's fairly nuanced I get it... standards (in 2018's language) is about behaviours time and time and time again... set them high for sure..make people accountable for sure (see Watts, Garlett, etc etc) with an understanding that athletes are humans, and [censored] up as well...

    UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft.     Demonland Trackwatchers ventured down to Gosch's Paddock for the final week of training for the 1st to 4th Years until they are joined by the rest of the senior squad for Preseason Training Camp in Mansfield next week.
