well it’s been 8 and 7 years and they’ve done sweet FA. GC are a rabble and GWS although getting themselves in a good position won’t last and continue to fall over. Shiel will be a big loss. Cameron has gone soft.

finally I reckon Gary made a massive blue spending 6 years at GC. Surely he will look back at that as a mistake. Some more money but I reckon he would regret it. 

Gold Coast will eventually fold. 

The Giants have some serious talent out injured and probably cost them a GF berth this year.

Demetriou went from relocating North to expand TV coverage to introducing two new teams when North knocked him back. One team was to replace North on the Gold Coast, the other was an afterthought when he realised one extra team meant an odd number of teams. 

North was going to be a manageable relocation both logistically and financially. But the two new teams are a financial black hole since every alleged dollar gained via expanded TV coverage is burned by the massive money needed to prop up GC and GWS.

It has always seemed dodgy that North's relocation was going to satisfy the TV expansion, but then suddenly the Giants and Suns were the answer.

Policy on the run based on Demetriou's spite at North.

Fiasco.

Fold them both.

 

History will show how lucky Hawthorn, Geelong and Sydney were to be top teams while these expansion teams were hoarding all the draft picks.

We had our chances but blew it at the draft table in the those early years.

Gold Coast will be a permanent drain on the AFL purse from an attendance basis. The only question is how much.

At present the AFL are looking closely at GCS but not at  their financial viability ... rather it's about their ability to attract and retain talent.

Not hard to guess at the answer to that problem.

GCS simply divides the small Qld market and makes it harder for Brisbane to establish itself after almost 30 years up north.

I'm a little bit more upbeat about GWS simply because of their access to the Canberra market but let's face it, they have had 3 years of very solid onfield performance and their attendances are not exactly skyrocketing. When they fall off performance wise in 3-5 years the attendance drop could be precipitous.

Meh, Gold Coast suffered from what I am officially announcing as the Gary Ablett Curse. Now he's back at Geelong, and from this point I'd reckon that Gold Coast will play in a final before Geelong does again. And no, I'm not saying Gold Coast are about to surprise everyone.

Also, the whole thing was botched from the start, at both clubs. I mean... Kevin Sheedy? Wait, was he brought in because he was a coaching genius or a marketing genius? Because it would appear there was absolute failure on both counts.

Western Sydney had to name their medal after someone with no meaningful connection to Western Sydney, because he was all they had. Sums it up, really.

One problem I reckon the Gold Coast was plagued by was the lack of involvement from the Southport Sharks.

That is a bloody legitimate football club with a brilliant history, a preestablished set of facilities and a social club that would make dee-luded cream his jeans.

It is true that there are more AFL fans on the Goldy than in Blacktown. However, the expat Vics, Sandgropers and Croweaters know what an authentic footy club looks and feels like. Sadly a Gold Coast team will never get their loyalty as they mostly have teams that they support already. However, their kids who are savvy to footy, thanks to their parents, are malleable but as they can distinguish a grass roots footy club from a cheap gimmick, they too will not barrack for the Suns.

Instead of trying to land the 'undecideds' and theater goers by providing a carnival atmosphere with mini trains, sausage sizzles and Coco the Clown at gate six followed by blokes passing football looking like McDonald's employees, they would have been better off establishing the Gold Coast Sharks and at least looking the part.
