The Casey Demons have to win this week to keep top spot and assure themselves of a home final. The injury situation at Melbourne will not help and unless a couple of those players pass fitness tests later in the week, they could go into this vital game for the first time this year with less than ten AFL listers.

Keeping an eye on the ladder as well. Defeat for Casey and wins to Richmond and Geelong would mean an away qualifying final against the Cats!

Garlett and perhaps Bugg will be playing for a finals spot and who knows we could see Hunt and Joel Smith.

Weather looks good at 17 and light winds ... maybe the perfect day for the famous egg and bacon roll.

Yeah mate, this game will be televised

If Casey can snatch a win here they’ll finish as Minor Premiers for the 2nd time in 3 years. I think the inprovement in the AFL side has been mirrored in having a really strong VFL program. Hopefully the boys, who will be going in probably under manned, win in the weekend it’ll be a great reflection of where the club is at as a whole.

The last time these teams met it was a spiteful encounter at Point Gellibrand that was dominated by the visiting Casey side which had 18 AFL-listed players and went on to win by 38 points.

The difference now is that injuries have intervened against the Demons which, on my reckoning, are unlikely to have more than ten players from their MFC contingent.

I’m not counting on Jayden Hunt or Joel Smith playing on the basis of the club’s conservative approach to players coming back from injury although both need the match practice if they want to break back into the senior team for the finals.

With Williamstown looking to hold their place in the top four, it should be another tough game for the Demons who face a possible away final at Geelong if they lose.

I remember that game, Williamstown were super dirty, something I had never seen from them before. Bugg got smashed at one staged, I was right on the boundary when Balic got killed off the ball, and multiple other incidents. Pretty sure they were a few fines and even 1 suspension from that game. Hopefully being a televised game Willy won't be anywhere near as dirty but we'll see.

The weather would have to be better than last week. Credit to anybody who ventured over to Box Hill.

Hopefully DJ backs up what I thought was a ripper game last weekend.

I think it’s no longer possible to keep a lid on Casey’s Jay Lockhart -

VFL 2018: Tasmanian Jay Lockhart is making his mark in the VFL after receiving state combine invite

”JAY Lockhart gave himself two years to see if he could cut it in the VFL.

He has needed only one.

In fact, Casey people will tell you it was apparent a few weeks into the season that the former Tasmanian was not only up to the standard, he would help set it.”

Originally thought after Round 5-6 that we should rookie Lockhart.

Now think we’ll need to use 3rd or 4th round pick around 48/65 and use Full Draft to draft him.

As predicted, Melbourne has taken a conservative approach with both Jayden Hunt and Joel Smith. Hopefully, they will come up and play for Casey in the qualifying final next week.

This means that after allowing one carry over emergency (there were 2 taken to Perth last week) Casey will have no more than 10 AFL listed players taking part in Saturday’s game v Williamstown.

Still a pretty weak side with Filipovic the latest casualty. I'm predicting the Dees to win by 1 point. I expect Wagner to be the emergency.

Beg to differ about Wagner being the emergency. He filled that role only recently and needs the match fitness. I think it’s either JKH or Wagner to play at Melbourne and that Spargo will be given the two week’s rest.

Tough game.  Too many outs injured.

I think Bugg could be held out as emergency.

That leaves 10 MFC listed.

Casey by one point. Optimism

Willy by 26 points. Probably

It’s a beautiful day today hopefully it stays like this and isn’t too windy down at Casey Fields

Will be heading along today to hopefully see Casey secure top spot.

I suspect and hope Josh Wagner is the carry over player. Pedersen & JKH will both play today as they got no footy last week, and Casey could do with Bugg rotating through the midfield. With Petty, Keilty,  Hutchins, Johnstone & Mitch White, Casey have plenty of options in defence to cover Wagner. Not as much depth in the midfield.

Casey by 10 points.

On my way to Casey Fields (shades of Elysium Fields perhaps) for the first time. Looking forward to partaking of the mythical egg and bacon roll.

This makes me nervous, especially with the talk of Carlton & Gold Coast getting priority access to mature age players before the draft. We may not get a shot at either Lockhart or Corey Wagner.

I've seen a lot of Lockhart this year, and would be willing to use our 2nd round pick on him.

I look forward to Demonlanders helping me and my iPhone batteries out today with the game being televised. Your comments and score updates from time to time will assist.

It looks like being a great day for the footy and nothing like the wild and woolly conditions that were experienced last week at Box Hill.

sure will young Willmoy.

I consider that the savouring of culinary delights can sometimes exceed the pleasure of watching the football.

The famous Burra Burger will however take a lot of beating :)

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
