IMO, we are a top 4 side, that may not even make the 8.  Can happen if you lose a few close ones in a year that is a log-jam.   Percentage doesn't lie.  I50's don't lie.  If we played GC, Saints and Carlton twice, he may have had a slight point.  On the flip-side, Geelong now have 2 sodas at home.  The draw aint fair; and we shouldn't complain about it, but one or two teams will sneak through because of it.

 

As usual Garry is dead wrong.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but there was nothing ever wonderful about his coaching selections; even at the time.

 

The AFL needs Melbourne playing finals.  Otherwise, give it to Richmond now.

Those of us who are old enough to remember 'the glory days' of the late 50s and early 60s remember tough, uncompromising players and a coach who knew they would win (at least most of the time) for their club, because they were the best and wanted to remain the best.  

The current generations of players, and coaching staff are actually just mercenaries who happen to wear our team colours but who with some exceptions just go through the motions.  Of course they 'would like' to win, but do they feel 'the need' to win for the club and the fan base?

I do not want to hear again this year how 'terribly cut up we all are' at stuffing up again.

Talk is cheap and has been spouted out for decades - I want to see action.

I reckon these two points (luck and injuries) are bigger factors than we're letting ourselves believe.

Yes, Collingwood and GWS have longer injury lists than us, but adding in the time TMac missed at the start of the year, we've still had a significant portion of the year with 4-5 of our best 22 not playing, and with the added negative that these players are leaders and hold experience. When we're losing close games, this must be having an effect.

And as to luck, no one on here really wants to talk about it but I think it's a factor too. We're hitting the post dead in front whilst Sydney get a shot from 50m to bounce like a Warne leg break through for a goal, or Hawkins makes every shot he takes, etc.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, these are not the only two things which cause us to be where we are right now (e.g. our injuries wouldn't be so damaging if our depth was better, and half of the luck issue is our own poor skill). But I don't think they're wholly irrelevant, either.

As much as Garry might not like it, we will still be in the 8 AFTER Round 23 if the following 4 happen, even without us winning another game:

- Adelaide beat North

- Collingwood beat Port

- Richmond beat Essendon

- Port lose to Essendon

All eminently possible. Most of what is happening makes the AFL happy as they don't want the 8 decided before Round 23.

Obviously win this week and we are pretty much there.

I don't buy the luck side.  Shouldn't be left to a bad bounce etc.  Our problem with our close losses is our own making that we need to fix.  Gary Player summed it up pretty well.

I think Geelong were in the 8 by default.  We should have beaten them 3 times this year.  They should have finished 10th.

Never understood the meltdown after the Swans game.   We outplayed them easily but our goal kicking was way off.  I knew we would beat GWS and West Coast.

And  'being in the 8 by default' is a ridiculous analysis from Lyon, it makes zero sense at all (unless in the extremely rare case like when Essendon got kicked out for doping and the BLues were put in the 8 by default).
