All need to lift!

Its time to make a stand and say what do you really BELIEVE!??

We may have beaten no one and everyone needs to lift, but with the season so close, and every game so important, no one's drinking their own bath water.

Rubbish?!

Swans were not better. We lost it. 10.18 is a poor output when we dominated without getting the scoreboard results.

The cricket analogy is that the MFC under Goody can score 380 off 50 overs; but struggle to block our way to 140 on day 5.  GSmith12 where is he?

IMO, we are a top 4 side, that may not even make the 8.  Can happen if you lose a few close ones in a year that is a log-jam.   Percentage doesn't lie.  I50's don't lie.  If we played GC, Saints and Carlton twice, he may have had a slight point.  On the flip-side, Geelong now have 2 sodas at home.  The draw aint fair; and we shouldn't complain about it, but one or two teams will sneak through because of it.

As usual Garry is dead wrong.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but there was nothing ever wonderful about his coaching selections; even at the time.

The AFL needs Melbourne playing finals.  Otherwise, give it to Richmond now.

I’d really like to know who people are talking about when they accuse someone of drinking their own bath water because it always seems to be a faceless person or people.

I will say it again. We are a mentally unstable club and have been for  53 bloody years quite a while. Until that changes losses like yesterday will continue. I think this eagles game will be very interesting..

Those of us who are old enough to remember 'the glory days' of the late 50s and early 60s remember tough, uncompromising players and a coach who knew they would win (at least most of the time) for their club, because they were the best and wanted to remain the best.

The current generations of players, and coaching staff are actually just mercenaries who happen to wear our team colours but who with some exceptions just go through the motions.  Of course they 'would like' to win, but do they feel 'the need' to win for the club and the fan base?

I do not want to hear again this year how 'terribly cut up we all are' at stuffing up again.

Talk is cheap and has been spouted out for decades - I want to see action.

I listened to Craig Bellamy after the loss by Storm.  Goody could take a few pointers from Bellamy.  Bellamy after all his success still tells the media after a loss that he thinks the hunger was not there.  Goody just fluffs about.  Tell it how it is Goody!! They either want it or they don’t!

He rolls out the cliches in the deadpan tone with no hurt or anger. No wonder the team play accordingly.

To a certain extent I also see it as both a combination lack of composure, but also bad luck.  In that second quarter turn around the Swans kicked about 5 goals straight from some quite difficult shots.  We had players like Trac hit the post at key times.  Against Geelong, Hawkins had a day out where he barely missed, last weekend he was shanking it all over the place.  When you loose a game by 9 points or less, these things count.

In the period of the game where we had the acendancy against Sydney on the weekend, we made them look pretty ordanary around the ground, it was just that guys like Tommy Mac, Jessy Hogan, Clayton Oliver and Charlie Spargo missed and in some cases shanked some very gettable if not give-me shots.  Had we gone into quarter time 30 points up and not 18, then I think would have significantly effected the rest of the tone of the game.  Say they kick 3 goals 2 instead of 5 straight, then we still go into the third quarter 10 points up after them having had a period of accendancy.

It's a fine line and whilst we are one of the most dominant, if not the most dominant team for some of the fundementals like contested ball, then I feel that it's only a matter of time before we crack winning against good teams and the air of confidence and almost arrogant self beleif of the players will follow and transfer into results.

We are missing Hibberd, Melksham, Lever and Viney from our best 22, those guys are critical to the team. We have JKH, Spargo, Pederson and ANB who give us nothing, plus disposal has been atrocious

I reckon these two points (luck and injuries) are bigger factors than we're letting ourselves believe.

Yes, Collingwood and GWS have longer injury lists than us, but adding in the time TMac missed at the start of the year, we've still had a significant portion of the year with 4-5 of our best 22 not playing, and with the added negative that these players are leaders and hold experience. When we're losing close games, this must be having an effect.

And as to luck, no one on here really wants to talk about it but I think it's a factor too. We're hitting the post dead in front whilst Sydney get a shot from 50m to bounce like a Warne leg break through for a goal, or Hawkins makes every shot he takes, etc.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, these are not the only two things which cause us to be where we are right now (e.g. our injuries wouldn't be so damaging if our depth was better, and half of the luck issue is our own poor skill). But I don't think they're wholly irrelevant, either.

Garry on On The Couch last night is clearly seething and angry with the club/team, felt like he held back a bit and is probably embarrassed like most of us.

As much as Garry might not like it, we will still be in the 8 AFTER Round 23 if the following 4 happen, even without us winning another game:

- Adelaide beat North

- Collingwood beat Port

- Richmond beat Essendon

- Port lose to Essendon

All eminently possible. Most of what is happening makes the AFL happy as they don't want the 8 decided before Round 23.

Obviously win this week and we are pretty much there.

Respectfully disagree. Lack of composure, deer in headlights, panicky football = no scoreboard pressure.

Allowed Sydney in it.

And then 2 men down?

I don't buy the luck side.  Shouldn't be left to a bad bounce etc.  Our problem with our close losses is our own making that we need to fix.  Gary Player summed it up pretty well.

Reportedly the following quote originally came about after a “good old boy with a big hat” stumbled across Gary practicing in a greenside bunker. After seeing Player hole out at his first attempt, the golfer offered him “50 bucks” to do it again. In went the next attempt. “Boy I have never seen anyone so lucky in my life.”

“The harder I practice, the luckier I get.”

Wasn't it the AFL coining the meaningless phrase "this final eight mightn't  be decided until the last round between GWS and MFC"

some ten rounds ago and there yu go............... nothing cooked mind you.

We know what Garry was trying to say, but it was a stupid comment.

ATM we are in the 8 because we have more wins and/or percentage than the teams below us. The same as it has always been.

I didn’t know you shouldn’t play finals if you beat the wrong teams.

Taking the footy ability (i think) out of the equation, what's this guy got that i haven't, to be so successful, and have so much exposure, (code for: loves to be IN CHARGE of footy shows) and fingers in so many pies.........

  • 4 weeks later...

I think Geelong were in the 8 by default.  We should have beaten them 3 times this year.  They should have finished 10th.

Garry was nearly right.  Just picked the wrong team.

Garry viewed us in the eight mostly because his mates hadn't put us there.

First and last crack at the past I will have for the next few weeks.

Never understood the meltdown after the Swans game.   We outplayed them easily but our goal kicking was way off.  I knew we would beat GWS and West Coast.

And  'being in the 8 by default' is a ridiculous analysis from Lyon, it makes zero sense at all (unless in the extremely rare case like when Essendon got kicked out for doping and the BLues were put in the 8 by default).

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
