Ok I know it's still 2 days away but I just saw the fixture and saw the Friday night game. Are the AFL serious? StKilda v Carlton? How do the Saints get a friday night game, that game should be on saturday at our timeslot and we could have had that friday night game. I mean surely we deserve one more than the saints. There are even other games that are more worthy on friday night. Any of the 3 sunday games or gws and tigers.

Lewis Martin from 7 would know that friday night not a lot of people will be tuning in and it won't be great ratings for them.

The Saints have another 2 Friday night games after this one.

Well according to SWYL Channel 7 used their influence to get the blues as many Friday night FTA games as possible. he has seen the paperwork.

Apparently they are no interested in ratings or advertising revenue. Such things are so last century. They are hell bent on getting blues the exposure their exciting brand of football demands.

What other explanation is there? There's no logic behind it...

Think I'll tune in to the lead up to the game on Fox and watch them try to make the game sound interesting!

will there be a goal in the first quarter?

who wants to get to 3rd last of the ladder???

Get ready for lots of frees to Ess this week.  http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-07-10/woosha-wants-a-meeting-with-the-umpires

"Richardson has spoken to Hocking twice about the Dons' concerns over the past fortnight, while Worsfold called Kennedy last week about the 11-21 free kick count in the win against North Melbourne"  And

"We're not suggesting that umpiring is the reason why we win or lose, you just want clarification on consistency," Richardson said. Maybe not but they sure want more favourable treatment!

I reckon the old adage: 'the squeaky wheel gets the oil' applies especially for the 'powerhouse' clubs.  Damn shame we don't do the same when significantly disadvantaged by umpiring eg after the Port, Pies and Saints games.

Correct. Binman likes to think i am responsible for this ridiculous scheduling.

I have no say in it, have never worked at 7 but i have read some documents

Carlscum are being given massive exposure, i am hoping it backfires massively....

The explanation is obvious.

Channel 7 have little to no influence on the the teams selected to play in  FTA key time slots such as Friday nights. It is completely illogical to suggest they do - regardless of what 'documents' SWYL alleges to have seen.

Why? Because their business model is based on advertising revenue, which in turn is based on ratings. As the ratings have shown this year their Friday nights have been a disaster.

Imagine a CEO explaining to his/her board that the reason for the terrible ratings and falling advertising revenue is because you influenced the AFL to schedule one of the worst teams in the modern era with a dwindling fan base who play boring low scoring football and only have two stars to play multiple Friday night games.

If they had they any influence on which teams  play in the FTA games they would move heaven and earth to have clubs like the Tigers and Hawks (and winning teams) play as often as possible in the prime slots and not have the blues play any FTA games at all.  Why? Because these games would rate well and they would result in increased advertising revenue. Simples.

Of course they - and Foxtel for that matter - have influence over things such as start times (the sunday 3:20 FTA game leading into the news and the standalone WA game Foxtel get Sunday night being two good examples) and for example the decision to play games on Thursday nights. But clearly little in who actually plays in those games.

The real question is why the AFL continue to gift Carlton so many cherry FTA games. The answer might be they want to keep them relevant and its cheaper than pouring equlisation money into their coffers to do so. Or as the conspiracy theorist might argue the AFL is overly influenced by blue supporting power brokers

Channel 7 have paid a fortune for the Broadcast rights. They have influence.

They have stuffed up very badly this year.

The blues have had a disproportionate number of FTA games over the last few years and the ratings have suffered.

Given this evidence you cannot seriously be suggesting that a commercial operation would lobby the AFL to play a team that will ensure low ratings on multiple Friday night games.

That if they did have influence they wouldn't use it to have a blockbuster every Friday night and picks teams contending  for finals. You know, to make more money. They are a for profit company are they not?

Please.

Why would the AFL be pushing Carlscum games? I am saying BOTH Ch 7 and the AFL have stuffed up.

If you paid close to a $Billion for the TV ? rights you expect to have influence on who is played when.

The situation is ludicrous, i agree and many heads should roll. But don’t tell me CH 7 and Fox are not involved in Fixturing.

Carlton have a very high supporter base:

So ch7 want those (almost) half a million people.   But they want Carlton kicking goals so they can run lots of sponsor ads.  And, the AFL are desperate to make Carlton a powerhouse again so lots of Fri nights was a good plan especially for Carlton sponsors and membership growth.

When the schedule was set Carlton was expected to be the fairy tale team of 2018.  I bet my bottom dollar that if Carlton were kicking goals/were competitive/close games ch7 wouldn't care too much about the general afl audience.

But the plan backfired because Carlton are rubbish and the game overall has generally become a low scoring snooze fest.  (The latter part is why Ch7 are pushing the AFL to change the rules so more goals are scored ie more ads for ch7 sponsors).

Make no mistake, ch7 have a huge amount of influence on the broadcast schedule.  They  would have the high supporter Vic clubs:  Carlton/Ess/Coll/Hawks/Rich every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night if they could as long as they kick goals so they can run their ads.

This then becomes a self-fulling prophecy ie More supporters = prime FTA = more supporters = prime FTA etc etc etc  Of course the opposite is true for the smaller clubs who forever will be caught in the resultant catch-22.  Even winning games or maybe a premiership won't help - look at the bulldogs.   Bottom line: the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.

Carlton may get less prime tv games next year, but the underlying agendas won't change.

I see little point us complaining - no one will listen.

I still find our Supporer base hard to believe. I think there are many more who don’t admit to being Demons.

But 54 years of crap sure tests resilience

2. Make no mistake, ch7 have a huge amount of influence on the broadcast schedule.

1. What a load of rubbish. They were almost universally picked to be bottom four. Name one football commentator who said they would make the 8 least alone be  'the fairy tale team of 2018'.

They are crap and have been for years and since he started at the blues Bolton has them playing a boring defense first style. Add the fact that they have at best two marketable 'stars' and blind freddy could see they were a shocking option to be playing in such ccritical time slots.

The critical number is not a teams estimated fan base it is the number of people who tune into the game. Besides, by that list there are middle of the table in fan base with 8 clubs above them an, four of which being Vic clubs. And with nearly 100k memebers surely Richmond have gone past them.

2. Again rubbish. Assuming you mean who is playing in particular matches not when matches are being played. If it were true there is no way they would use that influence to have Carlton playing ANY FTA games given Carlton were given quite a few cherry time slots in  in 2015, 2016 and to a lesser extends 2017 (and plenty this year) and, unsurprisingly, they did nod not rate.

I do agree however that the AFL are desperate for the blues to be relevant again. Which is why the most logical scenario is that they have made the call, probably in spite of protests from Channel 7, to select Carlton to play so many Friday night games. After all it is their call.

1. My comment about 'fairy tale team' meant biggest improvement not finals.

If you really doubt the prime time fta slots are not based on supporter numbers go back and look at the prime fta games for Pies, Ess, Carlton, Rich for the last 3 years when they were all crap.

2.  I meant when matches are played not who is playing.  Ch7 has the choice broadcast picks - Foxtel had to lobby hard to get some of the better games into their monopoly time slots in the most recent broadcast agreement.

My posts weren't 'rubbish' nor was I being critical of your posts - simply presenting some information to shed light on what seemed illogical.  Feel free to believe what you want.

Anyway, that is it from me on this subject.  Don't wish to derail thread further.

They have the advantage that every game they play is on free to air in Sydney, Canberra etc

To the poster who said the AFL control the Friday night slot: The AFL wouyld be mad to do things which drive down the ratings because 7 would offer less loot for the next contract.  It's in neither parties' interest to have poor matches, but it could well be that no matter how bad the blues are, they figure the overall audience will exceed MFC playing Suns etc.  They may have got it wrong this year, but I'm sure the ratings mean cash which means ratings take priority and 7 will have a big say in that.

That supporter base figure for the MFC is very disappointing.

To be below North is particularly disappointing.

On the flipside I am amazed that Essendon ranks above Collingwood.

Thanks LH for the data. It would be wonderful to track that type of data over say a 20-30 year timeframe and measure the damage that our failure as a team has wrought.

Poll done by a Sydney company??? If those figures are correct how come Melbourne's figure is so high with average attendances (take out the Alice and Darwin). I think 4th or 5th currently.  Does not make sense.

The reason why Carlton get so many Friday night games is simple. The AFL is catholic and Carlton are fish and chips.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
