Big win for Foxtel subscribers.

Feel a bit sorry for non subscribers as their now deprived 1 less game than 2002-2006.

Now that Fox have got the 1:10 Sunday game (ch 9 used to have it) will the channel 7 game at 2:00pm be an MCG game. For example in round 3 we play Geelong at the MCG on a Sunday at 2:00 so you would assume this would be shown into Melbourne live against the gate, therefore perhaps effecting the crowd figure.

Big win for Foxtel subscribers.

Not really because Fox Sport 3 is an add-on channel.

This now means that if you want to watch the footy, you need to either pay extra for the sports package, or replace your existing package with a sports package just to watch 3 or so games a week (Unlike before, where you got the footy channel in the basic package).

I'm seriously going to let these Foxtel people have it.

Of course they are happy to pay Channel 7 & 10 when they get to milk extra money out of us!

After a quick look at the provisional AFL fixture, Melbourne looks to have done well in the first half of the season in regards to FTA coverage.

If we take it that the schedule is as follows:

Friday night - FTA

Saturday 2.10pm - FTA *

Saturday 2.10pm - Foxtel *

Saturday 7.10pm - FTA

Saturday 7.10pm - Foxtel

Sunday 1.10pm - Foxtel

Sunday 2.10pm - FTA

Sunday twilight - Foxtel

* Foxtel and FTA to alternate choice of `best' game from week to week.

Either 12 or 13 of Melbourne's first 14 games should be on FTA. The exceptions are Round 8 v West Coast at Subi and perhaps the Round 10 game against Adelaide (that depends on what the networks deem to be the best game.

Rounds 15-19 are likely to all be on Foxtel, before we play Collingwood on a Friday night at the MCG in Round 20. Rounds 21 and 22 will be on Foxtel as well.

That's a best-case split of 14 games on FTA, eight on Foxtel. If the fixture remains as is, the worst case will be 13 on FTA, 9 on Foxtel.

Not too bad, all things considered. There will be several clubs who fare worse.

I’ve got Foxtel and Fox Sports 3, so it’s all good, as the young’ns say. But anything that keeps the footy off Seven works for me.

Wonder how long Bruce and Dennis can carry Tim Watson and David Schwartz? I can’t see either of those two offering up anything in the way of insightful commentary; Schwartz in particular. In fact, their comments could well border on “special”, and not in a Bruce way.

Hope the Dees are in the Top 2 which will almost guarantee our matches are played on free to air.

Foxtel are a complete rip off. Look what they did with Love My Way...

Well done Foxtel - 2007 - 2011 should now be sensationsal.

Everyone still whingeing - Simply get Foxtel or go to the pub.

Either way you cant lose

Go Demons

I was having a look at the fixture and there is often 3 games on sat night. Does this arrangement mean that only 2 will be shown, ie. ch 10 and foxtel?

Who knows...who cares anymore

This is good news for me :D !!!

Especially given the fact that I live in Sydney, and had great doubts that Seven would have come close to giving us four live games a week.

So the fact that we can now get these games on Fox Sports is fantastic.

I am sorry for those who don't have the network, but this does make being interstate a little bit easier, as it has done for the past umpteen years!!!

Where you'll see Melbourne on TV in 07

Making a few assumptions here... but it should look like this

I've called it Fox Footy even though there won't be a Fox Footy Channel

1 30-Mar-07 7:40 PM St. Kilda Home MCG Friday Night CHANNEL 7

2 9-Apr-07 2:10 PM Hawthorn Away MCG Monday Day CHANNEL 10

3 15-Apr-07 2:10 PM Geelong Home MCG Sunday Day CHANNEL 7

4 22-Apr-07 2:10 PM Fremantle Home MCG Sunday Day CHANNEL 7

5 28-Apr-07 7:10 PM Sydney Away SCG Saturday Night CHANNEL 10

6 6-May-07 2:10 PM Port Adelaide Home MCG Sunday Day CHANNEL 7

7 13-May-07 2:10 PM Western Bulldogs Away Telstra Dome Sunday Day CHANNEL 7

8 20-May-07 2:40 PM West Coast Away Subiaco Sunday Day FOX FOOTY

9 27-May-07 2:10 PM Kangaroos Home MCG Sunday Day CHANNEL 7

10 2-Jun-07 2:10 PM Adelaide Home MCG Saturday Day FOX FOOTY

11 11-Jun-07 2:10 PM Collingwood Home MCG Monday Day CHANNEL 10

12 22-Jun-07 7:40 PM Richmond Away MCG Friday Night CHANNEL 7

13 29-Jun-07 7:40 PM Essendon Away Telstra Dome Friday Night CHANNEL 7

14 8-Jul-07 2:10 PM Carlton Away MCG Sunday Day CHANNEL 7

15 14-Jul-07 7:10 PM Brisbane Lions Home Gabba Saturday Night FOX FOOTY

16 22-Jul-07 5:10 PM Kangaroos Away Telstra Dome Sunday Twilight FOX FOOTY

17 29-Jul-07 4:10 PM Port Adelaide Away AAMI Stadium Sunday Twilight FOX FOOTY

18 5-Aug-07 1:10 PM Sydney Home Manuka Oval Sunday Early FOX FOOTY

19 11-Aug-07 7:10 PM Western Bulldogs Home Telstra Dome Saturday Night FOX FOOTY

20 17-Aug-07 7:40 PM Collingwood Away MCG Friday Night CHANNEL 7

21 25-Aug-07 2:10 PM Fremantle Away Subiaco Saturday Day CHANNEL 10

22 2-Sep-07 5:10 PM Carlton Home MCG Sunday Twilight FOX FOOTY

Channel 7 - 10 games

Channel 10 - 4 games

Fox Footy - 8 games

So 14 of 22 MFC games will be on FTA.

The games on Friday night and Sundays are locked in - Friday night will be 7, the early and twighlight games on Sunday will be Fox, and the 2:10 start on Sunday will be 7.

The Saturday nights will go on a rotating selection between 10 and Foxtel. I've assumed that 10 will have first pick, which the AFL will want, as the big marquee match of Sydney vs West Coast is on the first Saturday night of Round 1, and they'll want that on 10 so that there's no backlash from a massive game being selected by Foxtel at the start of the season.

Later on in the year it presents some problems, as Carlton-Collingwood falls in a week where Fox will have first pick (I think it's about Round 18).

The picks for Saturday night are done every six weeks - so it could change depending on which teams are having great years. As an example, Round 14 Saturday is:

Collingwood vs St.Kilda

Dogs vs Port

Adelaide vs Hawthorn

West Coast vs Brisbane

I've got that down as Fox having first pick and going with Pies-Saints and Eagles-Lions, but if Hawthorn was on a good run and the Crows were near the top of the ladder as expected then they may pick Adelaide-Hawthorn instead. At this stage you'd say Fox would go with West Coast and Brisbane, but everything can change once the season starts to pan out.

What I've picked for Melbourne games is what the logical choices are. I've put them in italics as ones that could change. Especially the Dogs one - it's the same night as Sydney St.Kilda, and Channel 10 has first pick, so it'll depend on ladder positions more than anything.

3 15-Apr-07 2:10 PM Geelong Home MCG Sunday Day CHANNEL 7

Hey Hards,

Would this mean that the game would be shown live on Channel 7 into Melbourne?

If so don't you think it would influence the lazy footy fan to stay home and watch it live on channel 7, therefore potentially turning away a few thousand fans.

Powelly: I think 7 will show it on delay, as Nine did with their 1pm/4pm starts.

I don't believe it can be live against the gate on Sunday afternoon.

In one way it would have made more sense ofr 7 to take the 1pm game, show it live and then do their V8 committments at 4 - on the other hand, the "better" match tends to be the 2pm one, and it means Fox can do 1pm/4pm back to back live to cover the twighlight game in full.

I'm not convinced 7 will show the Sunday game in full - but I guess we won't know that until Round 1.

I'd imagine Seven will show the 2pm game on an hours delay, having it finish at 6pm and leading into the news and other ratings programs on Sunday night.

I wonder really if there is a need for a 1.10pm game now though, initially it was for Channel 9 to fit in Rugby commitments, but surely the fixture can revert to 2 x 2.10pm starts and a 5.10pm start on Sundays. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a different fixture next year, certainly a few more interstate Sunday games that will be on FTA.

I don't understand all of this. Will Foxtel be getting the Nab Cup games in February or is it too late for that?

Sorry to be answering my own question but it seems that Fox Sports 1 will cover the Nab Cup although it's ironic that ABC2 will kick off the season tomorrow night with the Aboriginal All Stars game against Essendon. Unfortunately, it's only available if you have digital.

Not a problem for me and I can't wait to see Flash and the Byronator in action tomorrow night! ;)

The dees are the MASSIVE winners in the first 6 rounds...all on free to air and near live (only us and the rotten magpies have this good a deal for the first rounds)...hopefully it bodes well for telecasting for the rest of the season since i dont have FOX and am not going to pay another $600 per year on top of my redlegs membership.

looking forward to 6 good first up wins!!

    MORE FIERCE by Meggs

We’re back!  Winning the last three matches has recaptured our Demon spirit and, with superstar players returning from rehab, our Season 2024 dreams are not over yet.   So come along 5.05 pm Saturday afternoon to watch this Round 9 ladder-defining match at the Field of Dreams. Expect the Tigers to be fierce, but surely the Demons will be more fierce. Playing conditions are expected to be a dry 15 degrees with a typically gusty Cranbourne wind. IN FRONT by Meggs

In this must-win clash between Melbourne 11th on the ladder and St Kilda 8th, it was the Demons who were in front all day to win in a hard-fought Round 8 clash to make it three in a row to keep theit slim finals chances alive. A good crowd of enthusiastic footy families for week 2 of Pride Round had gathered.  The full pews in the well-appointed RSEA Park grandstand provided excellent viewing.   The Saints won the toss and elected to kick to the southern end favoured by a strong 2-3 g

    THE TRADING CHRONICLES 02

Part 2: Watching grass grow by Whispering Jack Critics of test cricket (and I’m not one of them) will often claim the sport is excruciatingly boring: that following a five day match is much like watching grass grow. However, the longest form of that game has nothing on the first week of the AFL trade period when it comes to inducing sleep among those in the football public who follows this process in its somnolent moments. The week gone by has been no exception. Only two player trades

    THE CAVALRY ARRIVES by Meggs

The injury plague which has beset the Demons 2024 campaign is finally starting to dissipate and with consecutive wins over GWS Giants and a 2-point nail-biter in Adelade, a sense of optimism is rising.  Some commentators are now asking whether the Dees can make finals? A huge surprise with team selection this week when it was announced that champs Olivia Purcell, Paxy Paxman and Eden Zanker would play.   Hallelujah!  The cavalry has arrived. GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised
