Keilty is very lucky to have received an extension, he shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as Petty who will be a champion.

A bit harsh he showed promise before he got injured against the suns. He was no good against West Coast but neither was anybody else.

Very little football sense. He's a good tackler and he's an okay interceptor, but he's poor positionally, his kicking is weaker than Frost's and he's a poor decision maker, as he's clearly not a natural footballer.

The FD are reaching with Smith for mine. He doesn't have enough going for the top level IMO.

I think his positioning is far better than Frost's, like most basketballers he knows how to guard space and watch the ball at the same time. Frosty was a volleyballer IIRC. Endurance makes him an even better athlete as well, in fact there's a case to argue he's the best athlete on the list - rare combination of endurance, speed and power. Decision making has to improve but he can get out of trouble with his movement. Kicking is the big one that might stop him progressing but the hope there is he's had a few injuries so hasn't been able to do the big blocks of training. Frost largely fixed his kicking this year after years of being hand in mouth bad, so it can happen once players get older and more experienced.

The real shame with Joel Smith is unless he really gets it together in a huge way there's always going to be a bit of regret to me. That's because I'm certain if the club was in a stronger position 5 or 10 years ago they would've got Smith in a father son academy and playing TAC footy and developing his game as a teenager. He's such a freak athlete I really think if he had played footy the whole way through as a kid he'd certainly be a very good player. Now it's a matter of if he can catch up.

It seems we have a lot of similar types, mainly big bodied mids. Would have thought an extra tall like Bailey Williams would have had added a bit of variety.

Agreed, Chook. A little disappointed that when given the chance to pick up Bailey Williams, we hesitated and this allowed West Coast to nab him as he would suit their game (for what it is worth, it would have completely suited and enhanced our game more invaluably, and could have addressed and strengthened our forward entries scoring results enormously).

Now the draft is finished, it finalises the Lever trade

A fascinating insight into how round 1 and early parts of round 2 unfolded with a behind the scenes look at the pick trades.  Draft

We may have been caught napping with pick trading and left it too late to get into the action.  We were one of 3 or 4 clubs to not pick trade during the draft.  Maybe we just didn't have enough currency early in the second round.

I suspect picks 20 - 25 will be very valuable in future drafts especially if held onto until draft night:  if a highly regarded player slips down the order or a club is keen on a particular player still on the board, the interested clubs will come courting!

Agreed. So it’s Lever and Petty for

Lochie O’Brien and Liam Stocker

interesting to see how this works out.

Not as simple as that; we used some of the collateral (ND46) from that trade to trade up to get James Jordan at ND28. So add Jordon and the cost increases by a Bytel...

Yes if Petty comes good where will we play him ?? he will be behind May and Lever for quite a while. and Oscar as well.

Might be a case of team balance like the Hogan trade and trade him out for a quality player who can sure up a weakness.

Or maybe he becomes a good player and we keep him.

Trade him to the Crows for two 1st round picks, they place a high value on defenders.

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence.
