But ultimately, I really get worried when I hear that NRL gets higher ratings than AFL on TV. I say, Scrap GWS (possibly make them an ACT team) and GCS's, and bring on a Tassie (Devils?) and a NT (Crocks) team. Because every time AFL trumps NRL, I get a little warm and fuzzy feeling inside..

I wouldn’t worry, the AFL will be burnt by their ridiculous scheduling this year and it won’t be as bad in future

The coverage into NSW - a market the AFL aims to grow - is just poverty stricken. And I don't mean Sydney. I mean all of NSW including the Northern Rivers and MNC where there is a sizeable Vic/SA/WA expat base plus the crazy banana benders from SEQ who obviously are discerning and realise Viccy Kicky is better than that NRL buffoonery.

Saturday 1.XXPM and 2.10PM games are almost never on. Neither are the later (pre 7.30/7.45) ones. Unless it's GWS Freo. GWS Manangatang Ladies Coterie. etc etc.

Instead, you have 35 channels on 7 all showing 2 shows with 18 flavours. Here they are for your viewing (dis)pleasure.

Ice road truckers Alaska

Ice road truckers North West Territories

Ice road truckers Yukon

Pimp my ride Venice Beach

Pimp my ride GLENDAAAAALE (actually this one is funny)

Pimp my ride Rancho Cucamonga

It just goes on and on and is just risible

I know 7 have a partner in Fox, and I know they ponied up billions in fiat currency but geez Louise, it's just poxy to the max.

Show more Demons games FFS

Agree with old mate Ern up there re: stop f#cking with the game but I spose given the money they get....

Then again, Carlton on telly is a bit of the, how you say, a joke

Ice road truckers look for a wife who has a house to sell after its rennovated.

Having said all of the above...

I do admit a fast, open, free flowing and high scoring game is far more entertaining. We all love celebrating our favourite players putting one through the middle.

So the Melbourne/Richmond/Collingwood (as much as it kills me to say it) and WCE current game-play is appealing and delivers.

Just my 2 cents.

NRL aren't hamstrung by BT.

It's a significant advantage.

Of course the strange thing is that the old fashioned kick to a player in space is not a great TV game either due to current camera angles etc.

Channel 7's definition of a good game is akin to basketball ...lots of scoring and a close game usually decided in the last couple of minutes..... What a yawn.

Let's see the TV stations play with some more angles and different commentary styles.

Hows about we all chip in 4 another camera for the next nt game.

Don't need more cameras, just a director who doesn't think the following are good ideas:

close-ups of a player running with the ball with no idea of what's around or ahead of him.

lingering shots of the player who just missed a goal rather than showing how the teams are setting up for the kick in

the ball going in and out of the field of view because they have zoomed in far too far so that the viewer has no idea what's happening.  But by jingo, it is exciting that way as it is so unpredictable. (not)

I'd prefer Channel 7 had no games. Can't stand FTA. It's archaic and done.

Hi  Sue. I had trouble watcching the Alice game as they couldnt zoom in the otherside.........ie not enough cameras. (One).

I don't. I watch it on FOX. But ever having to watch football on 7 is a crime.

Sure, unusual venue so not surprising that can't justify installing enough cameras.  But at normal grounds the frustrating thing to me is the choice of shot, not lack of cameras.

Those are also some of my pet gripes - no perspective of the  overall set up - those, plus the appalling inane commentary team.

And Rupert is such a good influence on the media

The sooner clubs have there own TV distribution the better

The backdrop was interfering a bit with the colours.

The AFL needs to use the yellow ball up in 'the Alice',,, because of the similar colours of the red earth/hills, and the red ball.

I loved the presentation and the story-line, and BT doing some really good work.  I haven't been a fan of BT, but he did a very good job of it, with a newfound respectfulness.

# I don't like the Fox presentation with cameras on all angles. Altering the viewing perception... momentary loss of viewing positional  direction.

Fox's coverage is terrible but at least they don't have ads during games. 7 is heinous.

I don't see the AFL ever giving up distro rights. Too costly for clubs and these CBA deals are the only reason some cluvs are even running.

I don't think that's an apt comparison. Comparing 7 FTA with ads with Fox paid sub and no ads, well of course Fox has no ads

the fox comm teams from the games I've seen using a mates Foxtel go login on iPad are wayyyy better. Almost worth the $10 a month Foxtel sub to also get Eurosport (cycling), MLB NHL and NBa

Introduce a VFA style of game,16 men instead of 18. (reduces congestion). Each club gives up 2 players which the bottom club can choose from.

Is signing into this website every second day is the new norm. If so ,I am p.ssing off.

Fox’s coverage is terrible. Yes it is

which is exactly why i will NEVER give Murdoch any money.

He is a parasite on the industry.

The AFL will change or die. Clubs should be allowed to stream their own games straight to members.

Suggestion to Ch 7. Get rid of Taylor until he can remember players names from sides apart from Collingwood, Richmond & Carlton

Wow. I pay a lot more than $10 a month.

Hmmm... I guess if Foxtel end up dominating the rights, can we eliminate the stupid wait between the ball arriving back in the centre and then next bounce? It seems we have got used to waiting for the full 30 seconds after a goal to allow the screening of an ad for soap powder or something, with the result that we all seem to be used to watching the umpire wait around for 10 or more seconds before bouncing the ball. Can we at least get back to the rhythm of the game, rather than have these awkward waits?

I was watching a schoolboy game not long ago, and there seemed something different about the centre bounces. I couldn't put my finger on it for a while, but it seems I found it novel that as soon as the ball was back in the hands of the umpire in the centre, the game was on again. Weird idea, I know ...

Would be keen to know what they'd do to make this Brisbane/Essendon game a red hot spectacle. There always has been and always will be rubbish games - the art is not to schedule the obvious ones in marquee timeslots.

The fixture is rigged anyway, you can't tell me they couldn't make it work so there's one game a week between expected contenders that they could make work on a Friday night. The problem is what happens when those games start to be GWS vs Port Adelaide - that's where we'll find out if the ratings are down because of game quality.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
