no idea. as a general rule I don't watch exhibition games unless we're playing

A pack of sour cream and onion Smiths and a bottle of Dr Pepper after going back over his games.

So I wandered over to BigFooty and some bloke posted this in the rumours thread:

'The deal is effectively signed off on. Gaff to Melbourne on $1.2M for 5 years with a side trade to WC of a very promising young mid. This trade facilitates a smooth transition. Gaff's manager is in Perth this week to finalise the details with WC. We met Melbourne end of last week. Evidently it is all remarkably amicable.'

Passes the first filter of my bs detector as to language/content (though the reported cost is quite something) and fits with my vibe on the subject. But the side-trade of a promising young mid? And I assume we get something decent trade-wise in return for it all to be above board. Any idea/speculation who these parties might be if the post is accurate?

Note: the suggested offer from our side and the trade facilitation for a matchable restricted agent doesn't exactly match up, but maybe the figure is off the mark or that is indeed Gaff's worth on the newly inflated market.

I like your reconnaissance @Skuit - that young mid would have to be Kent right?! Right?? Oh dear - Hogan played midfield... FMD

How exactly does a ‘side trade’ work?  Is it inferring that we’d trade a ‘promising young mid’ to them on the cheap, in return for them allowing us to take Gaff as a free agent?

Might it be Dom Tyson on the proviso that he grows his hair out and gets a priddy perm? Can't possibly be one of our 'promising mids' unless it's Salem, ANB or Harmes. An inflated salary like that would mean we would need to remove a mid so it doesnt matter if UFA or RFA, trade would be made.

Can’t see why anyone would give all those details then suddenly go coy about the name of the “young mid”...

This guy is just having a laugh.

no worries - 5 x $1m > 6 x $800k

That is a LOT of money, he'll be 27 in June next year

3 minutes ago, whatwhatsaywhat said:

$1m a year is not a huge imposition for one of the best mids in the game imo

he'd not even be 31 and a half when a 5 year deal would expire

He's just an accumulator whos never won a BnF or finished high in the brownlow though, superstars win BnF's consistently.

Seriously why would anyone want to join a club that crumbles whenever pressure is applied?

Like 2016 Richmond?

We’re not paying $1.2 million for Gaff nor are we moving any promising players on

How confident are you he'll be a Dee next year ?

Personally, I’ve heard nothing regarding Gaff.

Cards are being held close to the chest for now.

Pay Gaff anything he will be worth it, why trade when we don't have to.

i'd much prefer to stock up for next year and work to get dylan shiel who will be out of contract. He is a lot better than gaff. He has power and pace. Would be awesome for us.

Yep, save our pennies for real talent, and go hard.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?

It was only a preseason match but the new look Demons spearheaded by new coach Steven King looked impressive as they put on a clinic against perennial cellar-dwellers North Melbourne as they cruised to an 80 point victory at Casey Fields.
