Summary
Yep, Sunday was a shocker, no question. But letโ€™s not throw the toys out of the cot. It was far from the end of the world โ€“ or the season for that matter. Remember, Melbourne wasnโ€™t playing an average team. It came up against an opponent that has made the finals all but twice since 2006. Itโ€™s also worth noting that a certain side that went down to St Kilda by 67 points in round 16 last year โ€“ the same margin Melbourne lost to against the Hawks on Sunday โ€“ ended up winning the flag. And for the record, Richmond was smashed by the Crows to the tune of 76 points in round six last year.

And there in lies the problem โ€œexcusesโ€.ย

How long have we been doing this for, 12 seasons now! I think itโ€™s safe to say that the toys are well and truely out of the cot by now ย

My god it seem like our team will never change their habits.ย

Goodwin said in his post match press conference that "Hawthorn were structurally set up better".

Isn't that part of the coaches role?

Staggering!!

Clearly the quote is in reference to the fact that the Hawks held their structures far better than we did on the day.ย  The manner of the loss is proof of that.ย  As soon as the Hawks turned up the heat and we wasted a few chances we dropped our bundle a bit, didn't set up our structures as normal, and got the hiding we deserved for it.

Held structure...or simply had a better one ?

F@#k me, talk about an overreaction on here. ย Granted it was a horrible loss but itโ€™s 1 game for gods sake. ย

Bulldogs, Collingwood and ย Essendon haveย had horrible losses but have shown that it can be turned around a week later. ย I also recall Tigers losing by 80 pts to Adelaide last year and they still went on to win a flag.ย

Keep things in perspective people and stop being influenced by the media who are just looking to make a headline.ย

Pathetic prior to that. Too many dumb footballers, grab the ball when they should tap it, tap it to the wrong side, and our backline will never be able to compete with a quick small forward (hint, hint, next week).

Slow defenders:ย McDonald, Jetta, Wagner, Vince, Lever, Lewis.

Forwards and midfield lack class and smarts.

As always too many players jumping for marks, no one staying down.ย

Bugg has to go, kills the momentum to often. Thought he was crap last week even when he kicked the goals, got away with multiple fumbles in that game. This week decided to add the handball to a player under more pressure. By the end of the game he was too scared to even kick for goal and hand balling to Harmes under more pressure on his wrong side.

Lever, it continues. Look forward to hearing from his fanboys.ย

Tough to find a player who won their position.

We do not handle our own supporters negativity on game day.

The players try harder and harder, until they end up trying so hard, they lose objectivity...ย  and they become harassed within their own minds.

From that point, the game is as good as gone.

we our our own worst enemies on gamedays.

lets take it out on the opposition,,,,, instead of our own players.

Leave the venom and critique for during the week days Melbourne..

And they don't handle the supporters positivity too wellย in the lead up to critical games like C'wood last year, and Hawks Sunday.

Just get so far ahead of themselves.

I reckon at quarter time they were counting their winning margin, at least in their minds.

Teams like Richmond can make a commitment at the start of the year to be mentally stronger and give 100% of tough strong Footy for four quarters.

So did Bulldogs the previous year.

So why canโ€™t we?

Talent alone never does it.

We are soft and mentally weak.

Mentally strong .... what is that???

Robbo on AFL 360 thinks we're [censored].... phew I'm not so worried anymore.

But on a serious note, I am not going to Panic until Round 10. We should be 6 - 4, maybe 5 & 5 or it could be worse and season over.....

But if we manage to be 6 and 4, get Viney and T Mac back I won't be too upset

Truth sadly is we struggle without No.7. Our kids haven't stepped up just yet.

And have been for a million years ex of 87 which was just sheer bad luck and incapacity of Umpire Howlett to hear a siren!

Yep Mentally very weakย

Would Not, Could not commit to a training camp!!ย

Well Goody as Alice Cooper once sang!

"No more Mr Nice Guy"

Either he becomes like Barrassi or he will be confined to the mediocrity of so many coaches we have had since Norm Smithย

( Apologies to John Northey who was ahead of his time in people management!)

Well Simon???

So I've avoided D-land for the day, that was just a shocking performance that left me bewildered as to how a team that had prided itself on being hard at the footy and exciting at times could put in such a shocker.

I'm hoping that that's what it was, a shocker that will hopefully wake us up. We were so uncompetitive and completely rolled over for a half of footy, and that isn't the team I feel we've been watching for the last couple of years (even back to Roos).

The good thing about this happening at this time of year is that redemption can only be a week away. They've got to hit the track hard this week and atone for that non-effort.

Viney?

Edit: I see his name has already been suggested. Either way, heโ€™s the exact player we are missing right now. Funnily enough it were Viney and McDonald who dragged us over the line against West Coast last season. Brute force is exactly whatย Viney possessed in that game.ย

He did. The night he got injured

Well the apologists say this a just a horrible loss but this is the second in the last five rounds we played and are 2/3 for this mini horror run. And aside from squandering a long overdue finals berth.ย Yep rising with a bullet we are.

Yes, some strange results can occur.

Of those teams you mentioned ... Dogs Pies Dons Tigs ... are any of them renowned for not having a dip?

Are any of them renowned for dropping games they should win? Not one off but repeatedly?

Are any of them renowned for being soft and folding every time the heat is on?

ย

We are at a major crossroads. Next game is season defining and if it all goes wrong, may be the one we look back on as the coach killer.

Demoms11, you must have missed round 1.ย

The Dees lost to an injury plagued Geelong who played with a couple of debutantes that collectively put us away.ย

That makes 2 losses and 2 unconvincing wins against bottom 4 sides.ย

Goody' "silver tongue" will find a way to take this year as a positive. Regrettably, very few will buy it.ย

No more excuses. Our game day narrow visioned game plan has been exposed and exploited. We are looking like mugs when teams go over the top of our defenceless forward press.ย

Roos will be livid that his years of teaching players to defend has been tossed out.ย

Please go back to coaching school Goody, we need a new plan that the players can execute.ย

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season.
