Running towards an awkwardly bouncing ball with his opponent right behind, having to change stride and pace to take clean possession of the ball, the acceleration away from the opponent and then the kick around the body at full pace straight through the goals.

If Danger or Dusty had done the same, the commentators would have wet themselves. Our Clarry does it naturally.

And now he is being compared to Diesel for his handball skills.

Give him time. Clayton will be an AFL Legend in time. 

He has to do those skills late in September, that’s what the people remember.

As for Clarry, I would add his tackling - its like a mechanical vice from which there is no escape. And now we know he is a goalkicker. What a package. Now we need his teammates to learn how to get to good positions so that they can leverage off his skills.

It's true that Daw  takes a great mark over midgets but it seems that that is his only marketable skill. If Eddie wets his pants, then it can't mean much.

I was thinking about this yesterday and I can't think of a better midfielder we've had in my time, which is mid 90s onwards. And that doesn't even factor in any improvement left in him.

Eddie might be softening him up for a Collingwood jumper nest year!

Well if they wanted Chris Mayne ( Dud) Then surely Majak is the nest best thing.

I go back to the late 50s. I have seen champion midfielders (or centre men as they were once called) like Laurie Mithen, Hassa Mann, Greg Wells, Brian Wilson and others but none had the same range of skills and abilities as Clarry.

None had the potential to be as destructive and dominant as Clarry - a consequence of our modern game. In their day it wasn't expected so it is not fair to make comparisons.

Sadly, as a result of multiple concussions, I doubt if Diesel thinks much at all. ?

For a young gun kid to cope adequately with a hard tag all day, and nail a few goals as well, is a really big step. Learning to deal with tags without having to go through too much of the experience of being successfully shut down would be a big confidence boost that lasts a career.

Also, I've kind of given up on TV commentary, I run the radio through the laptop if I'm watching a game on TV. That way I even have a choice of about three or four commentators. None exceptional but all better than the TV hoopla-razzle-dazzle-[censored]fest.

I'm also really happy for Picket Fence, who finally got to see the club draft a player with the exact specifications he has longed for over many years, AND then see that player be an absolute gun right from the start.

Agree. I've been banging on about this for months, so I won't go into massive detail about definitions, or how long "my lifetime" is... but yes, in terms of players who do what he has done, as regularly as he's done it, as young as he is... Nothing even comes close.

Thought he was pretty quiet on Sat. 20 touches and 2 goals. I'm not used to seeing anything less than 30 next to his name.

There are very few mids with no weaknesses.  Even some of the greats have weaknesses.  Sam Mitchell - slow/contested marking, Simon Black - slow, Dangerfield - kicking, so on and so forth.

Oliver has speed, great hand and foot skills, marking ability, agility, body size, aggression, vision, decision making, etc.  He has no weakness.  None.

That's not to say he'll end up as good as some of those players, as they have a level of sheer brilliance that can't be measured.

And that is the only query.  Can he show he's capable of the regular sheer brilliance of the greats.

I hope so.

And the majority of footy fans have no idea yet.. just wait til they see his full bag of tricks. This kid will dominate as resting forward.   He kicked bags of goals as a junior and he will repeat that at AFL level soon enough.    Theres nobody that can stop him. if he wants the ball he will get it.... anywhere, any time on any opponent,

Oliver, Hogan and Petracca are all blossoming into superstars in front of us.

And I still think Brayshaw can add his name to this list.  Whatever it is that is stopping him from getting in to the seniors, I hope he sorts it out ASAP, otherwise, he's going to find his AFL career will be over in no time, and he'll miss out on being part of something pretty special.

With regards to Clarry's goal - he actually times his run to perfection in terms of gathering the ball.  You can see he just drops his speed ever so slightly, so that when he makes his attack on the ball, he's hitting it at the right time.  It's only a fraction of a second that he does this, but it allows him to gather the ball at the perfect height for him, allowing him to turn and kick without fumble.  Pure genius.

Clayton Oliver will be thought of in the same way as Robert Flower as time rolls on.

Almost blasphemous  SWYL. In Oliver's case I think he will be seen as a superstar in a premiership team.  Robbie was a superstar of the game who never received the ultimate reward.
