Fritsch and Hannan

I’ve seen a lot of players come and go over the last 50 years and believe me when I say Young Fritsch has star qualities.

Garlett laid more tackles then Hannan, Melksham and Hogan and almost made all Australian last year.

No concern here .

Apart from the centre bounces, yesterday’s game was played mostly in the air.

There was hardly any ground ball to pounce upon for our small forwards, we constantly got outmarked, or players like Fritsch Hogan or Pedersen marked it.

All part of Geelong plan to keep our small forwards out of the game, which is why Garlett, Melksham and Hannan had poor games.

Just limited opportunity , and bombing it in long and high didn’t help. We couldn’t get any goals out the back like we usually do.

Still it is a case of master v pupil when it comes to geelong but I don't think we are too far off the mark.On the the Q of Hannan v Fritsch,both need lots of senior experience.

Happy with both. Hannan has good stints through the middle last year. 

 

Melksham was as bad as Garlett yesterday. Offered little and I thought too timid at times. 

I’ve been a Melksham basher but he has grown on me, yesterday not so much.

On Sunday, he had a mate in Melksham who looked disinterested and unable or unwilling to impact the contest. 

I  prefer a future with Hannon and Fritsch.  

It always seems to happen, that when Our players make some sort of on-field statement, & start feeling comfortable and secure, then they slack right off.

Could it be that Jeffy is just too happy with his footy and position in the side?

Frost forward would have been handy with his pace, & marking Or bringing the ball to ground, inside our 50. A defensive tall forward ?

We cannot afford senior players taking the game off, anytime.  If we are to make finals for the 1st time in 12 years?

Garletts weapon is speed. He is not a pack marker. You can't expect him to do much with it when almost every entry into the forward 50 is bombed on top of his he head, often to a 2 on 1

That said, he could have spent a bit more time up the ground

It's interesting, isn't it ?

Geelong conceded 23 more inside 50s and their two generational midfield stars gathered almost 80 possessions between them.  Yet they lost 3 of the 4 quarters and if Gawn kicks straight they lose. 

And you're not praising them for this "really good game plan".

You contradict yourself here.

We bombed the ball in and there was plenty of ground ball. We just didn't get it because a) we weren't positioned well b) we had too many fly for the mark or c) our mids failed to follow the ball in and help hold it in there. The last point makes sense because we were trying to get the ball in as quickly as possible - very hard for mids to follow the ball in.

Even though far from perfect there has been considerable progress.

 

If we are as good as we are supposed to be, we should have beaten them easily.

They didn't have a great side in on Saturday and it was there smarter play and skill that beat us.

Smarter, they moved the ball better with better options and their midfield was too skilful for ours.

been there, done that - didn't work when we tried to turn him into a forward before so I'm not sure why it work now ?

No, not trying to to turn him into a forward, he can be led to the high ball. 

The cats marking in our attack was an issue.

 

This idea would be, in a circumstance like on the weekend, when we are bombing the ball high, and they are controlling that, that Frost could have been swung into attack as a Defender.

Not trying to mark the ball, unless he finds himself alone inside 50.

 

Frost's role in this circumstance, would be to provide a contest and stop the Cats from marking the high ball, creating a ground contest, and bringing our smaller forwardline players into the contest, or at least halving the contests.

If the ball ends up in a stoppage that's fine.

 

If the loose ball ends up with Garlett or Fritsch, even better.

 

That's all I'm saying.  If our tall forward players were too high, and the cats were just catching & running off.

We want to be playing the game in our forward half of the ground. Not theirs.
