Changes for GWS

Weid outplayed Pedo in the 2's so he comes in.

Pedo's early season form irrevelent

Assuming Jonesy passes his fitness test, then I reckon there are three definite changes and a fourth that will be debated long and hard at selection table.

The two certain ins are Jones and Vince and whilst originally I was  thinking we'd want to retain a quick, pressure forward set-up, the smaller dimensions of Manuka (167mx138m) than the G means that we probably need a big to replace Hoges and Weids form was timely and he now has two games (Box Hill clash was other one) where he has dominated, even if conditions have meant he has been quiet in other VFL matches.

The three outs are pretty clear to me - Hoges injury (Weids), Trenners (Vince) and Hannan (Jones).

In Hannan's case it is just a couple of weeks back in the twos to get his form back.

The fourth change I'm sure will be debated long and hard - Corey Maynard has been progressing nicely, was 23rd last week and one of the best in VFL again on Sunday. But who makes room if we pick him? We already will be bringing Jonesy back into our midfield.

The only two realistically that I think we will  consider will be JKH (which for me is a no, because is finally showing capacity to play at this level and we need his outside run on Scully) or JW (Now that he is well and truly over hammy, I am sure Goody will be working him harder this week on tackling drills anyway, so that he's switched on from the outset). Not sure how DLers can list ANB - sure he misdirected a couple of handballs, but he is almost a regular now and for good reason - vision, tackle pressure, smarts around goal, courage.

But ultimately I think unless Jonesy or one of the key mids doesn't come up, then Maynard will have to wait another week for a debut - most likely against the Saints at the 'G.

Out: Hoges, Trenners, Hannan. In: Weid, Jones, Vince.

Positional switch - start JW on the ball for first five minutes so he's more involved early and then send him forward and hopefully it forces a match-up with Lids, who JW will enjoy because he plays better against class players.

Clever-coach switch - if it's windy then play T-Mac back into the wind and send him forward when we have it. I couldn't believe it when this didn't happen on the weekend and with Lobb, Patton and Cameron, we face a similar size issue this week that the zone cannot totally overcome.

Why we win: All 22 players firing up, but Gawn in particular exploiting Dawson going the other way.  Note: Dawson had his best-ever game last week, so big Max can't take it easy.

Key match-ups: JKH on Scully, Viney on Shiel with Melky on Kelly.

The Canberra forecast is for a windy day and potential rain. I would prefer we go with extra mobility.

Seriously, this season is a joke. We've played the last 4 games in entirely different circumstances each week (most not at all conducive to quality,  football).

Then you watch teams like Essendon play at Etihad in literally the exact same conditions week in, week out. In their last 9 weeks they play Etihad 6 times, the G twice, and have one trip to the Gold Coast (on a 7 day break either side).

Thats the reward you get for being a drug cheating club.

I thought on the day JKH was one who looked likely to actually make good position and move the ball forward with purpose. I wouldn't drop him.

ANB and Hannan were worst on by miles, but prior to that game had been playing well.

In: Jones, Vince

Out: Hogan, Trengove

I haven't read the Casey reports yet but happy to consider the better of Pedersen and Weid if we think we need another tall forward in. ANB or Hannan to go if this is the case.

Watts is on thin ice, two very weak efforts since his return.

Watts always takes a few rounds to get going once he comes back into the lineup.  #WattsThings

No it's not.

I'd still play the Bear ahead of Weid every day of the week at this point.  Weid has played what one good game in a row?  The Bear was reported as our best big man the week before and as being the domaint big man on the ground.

Weid would need to play a different role in the AFL side (as a second tall to Tommy Mac) compared to a main focal point in VFL.  I didn't see Weid's performance on the weekend, but I still don't rate his ability to take the big contested marks, bash crash, tackle or ruck like Pedo Bear.  If we think we need to replace Hogan with another tall, the Pedo's the player I'd be looking to and I think he would rise to the occasion.

I think the form of Weiderman is encouraging, but my view is he still needs another preseason and to bulk up a bit more...if he is selected and plays well, I'm more that happy to be proven wrong.

FMD we're off to bloody Canberra - we seem to be doing a tour of every shitehole venue in Australia. Reckon we should play a couple of polar bears.

FML it has to be some sort of a record for the most amount of states played in an AFL season by my count its 6, we have played in SA,WA,TAS,NT,VIC and ACT gee the AFL might as well have included QLD and NSW on 6 days breaks just too make sure we we're know where near finals.

I'll back Pedersen in against GWS over Weideman.

Weid with 3 goals, 20 touches and named in the best. Match committee rewards form.

Let's hope we play the drug cheats Grand Final day in a blizard.

Sam Weideman: Sam had 14 disposals, three inside 50s and two marks.

Corey Maynard: Corey had 30 disposals, including 20 contested possessions, seven clearances and five tackles.

Ignore me, wrong week.

You are probably looking at last weeks game

"Key-forward Sam Weideman was prominent inside 50, leading well and flying through the air to clunk nine marks. He had clean hands around the ground with 20 disposals and despite some wayward kicking, he finished with three goals in a great performance."

Thanks lad, my error, why would I think that they would highlight last weeks game?

Playing against Coburg, a VFL team with no AFL affiliation.

Again, I'll back in Pedersen ahead of him at AFL level.

Steve, I can remember 1964, so I go back there at times, nice place, VFL Premiers, EH Holdens, I could look at teenage girls and not be slapped.

Edit:- Those girls are around 70 now!

Didn't Cameron play vs Freo?

Mumford and Greene will be their outs. Every chance they give Shiel a rest with that bung shoulder

Yeah apologies,  he did..  think he missed recently with a hammy though?

That does help, need just Kelly to get Gastro :)

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
