There were some pretty stirring moments post-match. Camaraderie is sky-high right now and you could tell it meant a lot to Goodwin and the boys as to various sub-texts. Would have been a shame to have missed that for those leaving early. It's not like there was a lot of traffic to beat, right?

    I have spent the last two days flagging down bus loads of Japanese tourists telling them about us, that's it's the dawn of the demons, to join up & attend the St Kilda game. Was wondering why all the confused looks & now think perhaps it's me.

    For myself, I had a gin making course at Bass & Flinders in Red Hill that finished at 1:30. It made for a nice celebratory drink. I would've been there otherwise.

    Clearly Saturday lunchtime/early arvo is a popular time for a lot of things. That it is fast approaching weekday peaks on the roads is testament. Be thankful that 25k die hards, who literally have nothing else to compete for their time, did turn up. More than any other time we have played Port at the G.

    LOL can you imagine the interwebs going crazy over this? Only way it could be better is if it read "MFC member makes Gin at Mt Buller"....

    Please understand, this is not a complaint. I will reframe the question though: why did the MFC get its projections wrong for attendance figure?

    Does it really matter where Port are on the ladder re attendance any year we play them at the 'G?  For the record its was Melbourne 5th vs Port 8th.  Both teams had won 4 on the trot, we were 8 - 4 going into the match.  

    The percentage 'increase' in AFL crowds in 2016 vs 2006 was -9.6%   This year to date vs 2006 is a more respectable -3.2%.

    Why did the MCG get it wrong?  Ask them?  As previously written though, 35% above the then record is ridiculous, sailing very close to taking the [censored].

    Perhaps a weather comparison will be a better yardstick to measure. The game was played early in July so perhaps it was a tad warmer. :P

    We also sit in the MCC section and very few left. They only started to leave as the boys had run past us to stand by the race waiting for Jack Watts to lead them off. For 27,000+ they made quite a bit of noise during the match.

    That's a pretty damning decrease and I applaud you for being arsed to look it up. Though I maintain, if we got the same figure for lowly far-out-west Freo in round 3, then why shouldn't we expect to do better against Port based on the context of the match? Unless there were some other factors, such as our poor showing against Adelaide, a spot of MFCSS, and the prevailing arctic conditions.

    In London at the moment...poor excuse I know.

    ...but let me also say this. I don't enjoy going to the footy as much any more. for one the "match day experience" really aggravates me...I can't stand the noise.

    Also I don't see the other side of the ground as well as I did. My sight is ok but back in the day I could pick the players and the play easily and my mates would always ask me what was going on. It's just harder to pick up these days. I think the problem is 2 fold, the main one being the congestion around the ball and the secondary one the advertising on the fence.

    I used to love going to the footy but not so much now...

    I went pretty heavy on the aromatic botanicals, with only just enough from the drier end to balance it out. But to answer your question: no citrus other than a hint of lemon myrtle.

    I have a sick wife and my son looked after her whilst I was at the footy, I had to race off as soon as the siren sounded so I could let him get home and so I could cook dinner. Otherwise I would have been there for all the renditions of the song, I would have loved to stay and cheer the boys off  

    People have various reasons for staying, or going early.

    Zero chance of us playing the Cats in a final or zero chance of that game being played at the Cattery?

    I doubt they would play a Prelim against a Vic team in Geelong but I believe the Cats would get a home game in Geelong against us in a Qualifying Final. I also believe that if the Cats were playing Richmond in a QF that game would be played at the G.

    No way they can schedule a final between two Victorian teams at Kardinia Park, it would be an absolute outrage after we've waited 10 years, that 99% of us couldn't go to see our team play a final.

    Geelong should only get a final at Kardinia Park against an interstate team. Otherwise too bad so sad. They already have the most ridiculous home ground advantage in the competition.

    Take your Demon's beanies off for a second. Besides being a commercial decision by the AFL why shouldn't Geelong get a home final, like the interstate teams, if they earn it?

    i reckon there was more than that at the ground anyway - i had my kids with me and their kids memberships wouldn't scan properly - the guy just let us in anyway but it obviously wouldn't count towards numbers.

    If it makes you feel better though, I managed to get my 4 year old daughter to watch almost 10 minutes with me - which is a new record for her.

    My 6 year old son is completely uninterested. It might have something to do with the 2m Max Gawn height measuring chart he was sent earlier this year as part of his membership package. I put it up in his room and it scared the [censored] out of him. Had to take it down. Ol Max now lives in his wardrobe, which I must now shut completely before bed each night.

    Also, on the uninterested side, I tried to get him on track by taking him to Auskick when the season started. It was pathetic. 200 odd kids and 4 coaches. A few witches hats and a bunch of balls, and I ended up running the drills for my son's group. I know nothing about teaching footy or kids. They didn't even explain what the drills were supposed to be until half way through the session. Then in the match simulation they popped him in the goal square, ball didn't go near him the entire 15 minute game. He was running around making aeroplane sounds with his hands stretched out. It's been a battle to get him to go ever since. Footy is now 'boring'.

    The worst excuse I have heard. Parenting equals taking your kids to the footy. 

    It's not entirely your fault, you need some kind of wholesale approach. My 3 year old spends a lot of time with my parents, her grand parents. Her first words were Jack Watts and she is almost pyschopathic in enjoying the Collingwood down fall. "Are they crying dad?" Yes. And we all cheer.

    She doesn't understand that Jack Watts and Daisy don't play on the same team but I guess that is the point. We are Melbourne. Red and blue. Girls have an avenue now. Bless you PJ.

    Get your kids to the footy Choke we will be a power again and your kids need to be a part of it.

    I look forward to the day when my children too may take delight in the tears of a Collingwood supporter.

    I am unfortunately playing on hard mode, as I am the only caregiver in my children's lives with an affinity for AFL. My wife has no interest, in-laws have no interest, my own mother actually has a staunch anti-AFL stance and actively discourages any discussions on the subject, and my father lives far enough away that he can't babysit very often.

    Because their home ground capacity is not enough to accommodate a final crowd against another Victorian team.

    Last year Geelong played Hawthorn in week 1, and it was at the MCG, and then they played Sydney in the prelims, and that too was at the MCG. So why would it be different this year? Even against Sydney they were made to play at the MCG.

    My wife has no interest either (when she pretends to it is for the drug cheats). That is the beauty take the kids and it is their day with dad. 

    If your mum hates footy she hates footy. That is tough I don't dare give advice.

    If we are forced to play Jeelong at Kardinia Park during the final series, i will seriously consider dropping MCC and Club Memberships. 

    Finals in September are played at The MCG

    So sick of Jeelong getting absolutely EVERYTHING they ask for

      The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

    • REPORT: Port Adelaide

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

    • CASEY: Essendon

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
