Despite us needing a key defender at seasons end another mid sized forward would be handy Jack Gunston would be my target imagine a forward line of:

Watts, Pedersen, Gunston

I reckon we'll be ok with mediun fwds. A couple with training wheels currently. If one fell our way....well...silly not to take but the 1st cab off the rank has to be to plug that defence.(imho )

It's purely his draft position.  The kid can play, but he seems mentally fragile and he ran the moment things got a bit hard.  Not the type of player we want or need at the club.

I disagree on the urgency. If Pederson goes down next year, how much burden is placed on the shoulders of Hogan and Watts again while we wait for other players training wheels to come off and for how long? And if training wheels never come off and Pedo retires, we're at square 1 with a 2 year older Jack Watts and Hogan nearing contract end. Ditto for if Watts or Hogan go down. Fwd insurance is almost as much an imperative as Defence Imo. A ready to go AFL standard forward to spread the load should be part of the overall picture for next year.

That's a fair assessment Dom.  The problem we face is finding a decent forward who a club is happy to part with.  More and more we are seeing clubs shell out big bucks for tall forwards, so we would need to nab one who simply needs to a change of scenery, but even then I'd be worried because if they can't kick goals at one club, why would they do it on a consistent basis at another?

One example is Aaron Black - the Cats wanted a bloke to share the load with Hawkins, yet he can barely get a game.  He got a fresh start at a new club but nothing has changed.

We either need to get a little lucky or put our faith in some younger guys to develop.

That is a very harsh assessment of Spencer - do you really think he was injured through his own recklessness?   Not an accidental injury?

I must admit to not knowing a lot about Schache, but taking leave to consider his future!!  Could well be another Lumumba type waste of space :-(((

Apart from Lewis and HIBBERD we didn't recruit anyone of value. Past recruit don't seem to cut the mustard i.e Bugg,ANB,JKH,Kennedy,Tyson(?) just to name a few.We still have Spencer after 8 yrs that speak volumes doesn't it.

Hawks apparently shopped around Sicily and may do it again this year, i wonder if he's worth a punt as a 3rd tall with a good set of hands on him who may be down on his form this year purely from confidence.

My outs would be Kennedy, Hulett, Lumumba and Trengove :-(

Spencer: Rookie or 1 year renewal if he doesn't walk under FA (still need ruck depth)

Upgrade J Smith and maybe Maynard later. If not, another year as a Cat B.

If Kent proves to be uninjured, then trade or delist.

The only change for me is I had ANB as a trade or delist. I'd now give him another contract or elevate his trade value.

Don't know enough about the rookies. Unlike most, I'd be happy to see M White given another run at AFL level. It's not unusual for players to take more than one game to adjust to the pace. Haven't seen Filipovic or King in action so no opinion.

My thoughts on the 2017 OOC players:

Out:

• Kennedy - no reason to keep
• Spencer (UFA) - TMc's outstanding ruck/forward performance makes Spencer superflous
• Trengove (UFA) - it pains me to say there isn't a spot for him with Goodwin's play on game

Keep:

• Frost - has put off talks but will likely sign a new contract
• Hullett - contract for another year or two to assess further development/potential
• King - contract for another year or two to assess further development/potential
• Neal-Bullen - done enough for a new contract
• Vandenberg - should get another year to get back after injury

Maybe: 

• Stretch - probably done enough for a new contract
• Vince - still needed if we can find a list spot for him
• Pedersen - deserves another year but depends on how the club plays the back-up ruckman.  It may be TMc's ruck/forward outstanding performance that forces Pedersen out.  Personally, hope Pedobear stays.

The most recent bad boys (Kent, Bugg and JKH) are contracted till 2018.  I doubt the club would delist them and pay out contracts.  Doubt there is much trade value there.  They may play out their contracts at Casey as Smith, Maynard etc improve and new players come in.

Ignoring possible trades in and out, I reckon we will take at least 4/5 picks in the National Draft and 2 in the Rookie draft, (if it still is a separate draft).

The four / five outs from the main list are:

Lumumba, Trengove, Garland and Hulett and/or Kennedy

Trengove has barely played AFL level for 4 years, it probably isn't going to happen now.

Garland was non-preferred last year, hasn't played great footy for several years, he's not likely to be figuring in future plans and he has a role with the AFLW team.

Hulett still young but dropped to Development League late in his second year, indicates gone backwards.

Kennedy, a major disappointment after what seemed like a promising start.

How did we end up with Lumumba and Kennedy and Collingwood got Varcoe and Howe? (Rhetorical question).

The two outs from Rookie list are:

Tim Smith and Mitch White

Tim Smith, at his age and with his foot injury, probably not worth persevering with, which is sad.

Mitch White, he has played 4 times. His best was the half game against GWS in the last round of 2015. Still only 21 but we have to keep turning the list over.

 

Jake Spencer is the quandary. Whenever it looks like he is about to prove his worth, he both under performs and gets injured. He's probably cheap to keep as insurance, but he wasn't used when he could have been, two weeks before Gawn came back.

If we are a real chance in 2018, I don't think he will warrant being played in finals if Gawn is injured, - after what we have seen this year. Unfortunately it doesn't look like our other two rucks will be anywhere near senior level next year.

Interesting article in that it gives a very brief comment on the apparent rookie strategy of each club.

One element that stood out was the use by a couple of clubs to "park" older players that just might be needed if injuries occur. Drew Petrie is a case in point.

Perhaps it is a spot for Garland next year? I cannot see the logic of putting Trenners on the list if he cannot get a game with the long injury list we have at present.

Smart use of the rookie list is another edge for some clubs.
