I tell you what, if I was running the Adelaide Crows right now, I'd be raising some serious concerns over the competence of my general manager of footy.

  • Lever informs club of his intention to go, and nominates Melbourne.  Birdman Burton meets with Melbourne.  Melbourne opens negotiations in good faith, offerings its first and second draft picks - currently the best currency it has
  • Burton has the option of negotiating. No, Melbourne, we need two first round draft picks.  It doesn't have to be 10, you can use that in other trades to get us our two.  We would consider a 2018 first rounder as one if you can net one, or use your own.  Get on the hunt and we'll talk...
  • Instead, Burton just walks out without comment. Negotiations stall as a result.  Neither club now have any idea what other avenues to start exploring.  Lots of time leading up to trade week to go to waste as a result.
  • Burton then stands in front of the media and carries on like a butthurt fan.  It's all about the money, he says.  Message to current Adelaide players: "don't come to us to try and get more money.  And if you do and we try to screw you over, don't even think about leaving or we will besmirch your name to the best of our ability."
  • Burton says, "we'll negotiate with the 9 other Victorian clubs as well, to get the best deal." For Christ sake Brett, no you won't.  Lever wants to go to Melbourne.  If you don't negotiate with Melbourne, Lever will walk and you'll get f*** all in return.  Once you start being pricks about it, Lever will get to the point where he'll happily risk going to Brisbane or North just to p*** you off.  Don't reckon Melbourne fans or administration wouldn't even blame him.  You've got a good starting point for a deal on the table, but you'd prefer to risk it all, and do untold reputational damage to your own club, just to look good in front of your fans.

Typical ex-footy player promoted well above his skill level.  I'm so happy Josh Mahoney has grown in to the role that he has.  I'd hate to see a hot-headed oaf in charge like they've got.

Good post, Nasher. Although, being an admin you should've just left the swear words in for greater intensity.

if it goes to draft lever can set his price at 1M and 1 year contract. he can also make it clear that he will seek a trade after 1 year if he goes to any club other than melb (just like bucks did with bears). if he gets thru to melb he signs a contract for 4 years worth 3M with year 1 front-ended for 1M. nothing the afl can do about that. bottom line he gets to melb. only hitch is jake has to agree to tactic.

Excellent! That should fix those slow starts and poor 1st quarters!

I would love to be a fly on the wall in Birdman's negotiations with the 9 clubs though.

Burton: Jake Lever's coming to Vic.  What are you offering?
Other manager: Jog on idiot, we've been talking to his manager all year and we know he ain't coming here. Stop wasting our time.

You never know though, remember Mitch Clark was signed, sealed and delivered to Freo before we snuck in.

I get your point, but I think there's a big case for saying three trades won the Tiges the flag.

Thought they played massive overs for Prestia & Caddy, but those two allowed them to use Dusty & Cotchin to much more damaging effect. And Nankervis did just what they wanted him to do, not just at stoppages but around the ground too. He got to so many aerial contests.

If Jake lets us structure our defence much better, it allows the likes of Hibberd & Salem to play further up the ground. And as others have said, it allows T-Mac to play forward, and he suits our bomb-it-to-30m-from-goal forward game plan better than Watts or Weid or even Hogan.

of course game plans can change over an off season (or even in a season) but I agree that Tom is a better "tall target" deep forward that Jesse

That was the best interview BT has done, to hear Lever say it feels sooooooo good.

Because he hardly spoke, and didn't ask endless inane questions

The exact reason why i won't get excited until the deal is finalised Gonz

If adelaide want 2 first rounds we can trade with Richmond. Richmond 2 first round  picks this year. Picks 15, 17 and 72 =2156 points for picks 10, 27 and 64 =2199.

There is no difference if we pay 10, 27 or 15, 17. Only a 4 round swap, which doesn't matter.

I doubt Richmond would do that but you never know.

Tex showed with his ' conciliatory and gracious ' speech in defeat just what a top bloke he is.

Burton by comparison, to well, anything 'reasonable' is just a boofhead.

I dont mind Adelaide the city. Football....

Should Bernie be worried about his upcoming wedding?

If I was Bernie I'd throw a late invite to Lever.

Is it too early to start the Welcome to the Melbourne Football Club Jake Lever thread?

No ;)

I doubt Richmond would do that but you never know.

They might because they are keen to avoid having to use a good pick on father-son Patrick Naish.

If they upgrade one pick to 10 before any team bids on him then they get to pick a guy they want before giving up later picks for Naish anyway.

I think they'll ideally want to hold one over for next years stronger draft but if that's not achievable they might want pick 10 now to get someone in like a good midfielder who can given them a bit of extra depth for another September run.

Not anymore. Happens on draft night the same as academy picks.

Didn't realise, good pick up then DeeSpencer!

I like this quote from Levers manager

"Jake will only be playing for Melbourne next year," Guy said. "He won't sign off with any other deal"

A picture has emerged of @jleverr at a dump disposing of items that 7 News understands were @adelaide_fc related items. #7NewsDLRpKWxU8AA1DZE.jpg

That's hilarious!

C'mon, Jake, come to the warm bosom of the MFC, it's gonna be ok..

Time to teach the crows a lesson. Pick 10 only is on the table, accept it or we take him in the draft.

Adelaide are making themselves not only look like absolute fools, but proving Lever to be correct - if this is how they deal with stuff at their club, then I'd want to get out of there as well.  Not to mention Tex apparently getting stuck into him for leaving as well.  How old is Tex? 5?

The deal will get done in the end, no doubt about it.  I reckon Mahoney spoke well this morning and it sounded like we will be sticking to our guns and not budging on the deal.

The quote a month ago from Tex was "We hope he does the right thing and re-signs" Apparently the right thing is only what Tex thinks is right.

My question is, can he walk into the pre-season draft as a contracted player next year if he is not offered 1 year, but offered 3 years or 'he doesn't play for a year' from North but chooses to to sign and nominate next year?

can you reword that. i didn't fully understand

when jake nominates his required contract price/duration at either psd or nd it is a minimum requirement which the club he goes to must honour but could exceed  (e.g. the duration) but jake is only obliged to agree to his minimum.

it would be a brave club to take him on 1 year (at high price) knowing he will request a trade at end of year, and hoping they could turn him around during that year.

his other option (not really likely) is to stand out of footy. not sure if it is for 1 year or 2 years now

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
