Player nicknames

Featured Replies

Reading training reports and some other topics I sometimes get confused with player nicknames (I'm sure I'm not the only one).

And to further confuse things, I even get the impression that some players have more than one nickname.

Would someone be kind enough to list player nicknames for me/us thus making it easier to follow some topics.

Add a Y to their last or first names and you have a great start.

We all know N. Jones as "chunk', but I've heard others call him "doctor". Anyone know where that came from?

Is it the bald wheelchair dude from X-Men?Ā

You mean proffessor X.

Doubt that is the origin.Ā

Great thread - hope we can cumulatively document it.Ā

I for one know no-ones nick name - mind I have a few personal ones when they're playing like flogs.

'Doctor Jones' is probably a reference to Indiana Jones, via the awful Aqua song - 'Dr Jones, Jones, calling doctor Jones" repeated ad nauseum.

Great, thank you. I suppose most are self explanatory but a few show a bit of imagination Nibler, Chunk.

However is Christian Petracca also CP5?Ā And Clayton Oliver, Clarry Choo Choo or similar?

I would also nominate another nickname for Max Gawn: Rasputin!

Angus Brayshaw's grandfather is Sticks and his father is Sticks so Angus should also be Sticks.

You're welcome.

I was just jotting down what I had heard the players and staff call one another (their actual nicknames).

Clarry Choo Choo and CP5 I would consider fan nicknames commonly used on the forum for either fun or shortnessĀ (similar toĀ VB for Vandenberg).

If you would like I can add those in brackets next to each player? or feel free to take my post above and editĀ your original post to begin the database (like the contracts thread). :)

I wonder if some of these Nicks are Dland Ā ideas as to....as opposed to what the players would shout at each other on the pitch ?

All those without the question mark and asteriskĀ I picked upĀ from watching player and staff interviews, as well as mic'ed up training and game day footage.

I avoided D'land and fan related nicknames.

One of my main reasons for asking for player nicknames was to better understand some of the training reports. I, like many others hang out for the reports but when nicknames are used instead of proper names the reports can get a little confusing. OK I'm fine with Wattsy and Kenty for instance but Bull and TazĀ would have me stumped (I'd probably think Taz referred to Colin Garland)!.

i think it would be helpful to have "fan" nicknames added as they do frequently appear on this site and in training reports.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm not sure how to start a database.

Again thank you for your input, and monoccular'sĀ as well.Ā

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andĀ  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
