I'm assuming that the players we are going to pick with those picks will be available regardless of pick 48 or pick 57 and pick 66 or pick 68.

Great win by the Dees.

Rookie upgrades maybe.

So we got Lewis just for downgrading two picks. Who, if anyone could have imagined such a pickup before the trade period started, would have suggested that? Maybe giving up a player and a pick. But who'd be mad enough to suggest we'd get him just by downgrading two picks?

Maybe it's an inspired renewal of the midfield at HFC. But Fevola's Razor says the Hawks screwed the pooch.

(Fevola's Razor: the scenario that can be explained by rashness and hubris, rather than guile and cunning, is the most likely one.)

A great motivating tool for our list - having a senior Hawk talking about how good our list is becoming and wanting to join up just shows we are on the right track.

Lewis is tough and a good user generally and should insure we are not intimidated by the likes of Swans and Cats.

It also increases our midfield depth massively, but if we don't get injuries, then it's a little hard to figure out who will be squeezed out to fit Jordy into the centre square.

Being a very similar player to Tyson, it puts a bit of pressure on him and it's hard to see Bernie ever being required in the middle now.

No one gets squeezed out. No one has a lock on any position. They have to squeeze themselves in through good performances.

It's been very pleasant watching a side where no one is gifted a game. It will be even better next year.

And if good players can't get a game ... well, trade bait for a player we need (eg second ruck).

Go Demons!!!

Interesting how perception about a footy club indeed any organisation can change very quickly. For better and for worse. Sometimes it's one major thing, sometimes an accumulation of a lot of things. In our case, it is evident that we have a good young list, have coaches and managers who are respected and are seen to make the right decisions, and our young talent signalling their confidence in the future by extending their contracts. Also, the re-signing of Hogan has influenced the perception that we are going places.  Finally, the capability and personality of coaches and managers who influence those around them and impress those outside the club. Lots of small pieces that have accumulated and come together to change the perception of a once down and out footy club.  As management texts tell us, perception is reality. It impacts individual and collective hope, belief, trust, confidence, and a sense that there is a better future. We can look forward with enthusiasm and not despair. We can once again be proud of our great club. However, let's not forget the past and where we have come from so that we maintain a sense of reality and balance and don't allow complacency, over confidence and arrogance to set in.

Beautifully stated as usual, Ernest.  No wonder you won a Nobel for literature ?

Viney clearly a massive influence. God I'm glad he returned to the fold.

Also mighty glad that he went somewhere else first, though!!

Agree.  I was disappointed when he went to Hawthorn but it has been good for him now really  good for us

This is the debate I alluded to earlier before being told Lewis was valuable and best 22. Duh.

In a scenario where the ANB and Grimes types of last season (i.e players routinely putting in good performances but unable to crack into the side) become better players in the Kent/Brayshaw/Harmes mould (talented youngsters), I'd prefer to see someone like Vince make way rather than a youngster seek greener pastures through lack of opportunity.

Lewis makes our 2017 aspirations stronger, but we also shouldn't lose sight of the big picture.

I'm with you to an extent P-man, even though we know what a good player Lewis is, he has to get into the side from Round 1 and like the rest perform each week to stay in, the competition for spots was fast becoming fierce last season, this new season will be even harder, new coach, clean slate for everybody, can't wait

I'm not casting doubt on Lewis being best 22. He very much is and will be a solid acquisition. There are however considerations in terms of selection that can stem from that.

But maybe those can wait for another day.

Gees if we get Hibberd now we look good. Add Melksham, Hibberd and Lewis into the squad and competition for spots dials up to 11.

With this and the Hogan signing I couldn't be happy with the clubs handling of the off season.

We'd have to be firming for the flag next year. Surely.

Finally a mad Demon supporter (and Demon supporting Family) has made it in via trade - awesome change from Judd, Buddy etc.....

Is that right they are a Demons family?

I hope so & if true, I say welcome to the Lewis's wider family & also thankyou...  and to Jordan,  a big welcome Jordan to the Dees.

What's that, a bad word about Richmond? Took you long enough lol.

The Bulldogs have well and truly taken your 2nd (read 1st) team fancy then.

At least I predicted it 12-18 months ago; unlike the usual Johnny-cum-latelys that ring SEN and blog on here.

Get on the Saints, from a purely objective financial viewpoint IMO

Best day of my life so far...

Viney, Lewis and Oliver egging each other on in the midfield feels like it can only lead to good things.

Just make sure you've got a box of tissues handy first.

Tyson is the now. I reckon it pushes Jones onto the half back flank.

Was Lewis friends with Clarko two weeks ago when they had the B&F?

I laughed at that quote, because it seemed like some very deliberate wording of a specific timeframe.

As others have mentioned the level of on-field leadership he brings is immense.  Two aspects of this I am looking forward to the most are:

 - his ability to read the play, the change of momentum and how to harness that before to much damage is done.  That has been the biggest weakness of our leadership team.  By the time we work out what to do 3-5 quick goals are scored and the damage is done.  Lewis I think will fix this.

- teach Jack Viney the art of captaincy.  Jack said at EOS he needed to improve his on-field his decision making to be a better leader.  He was mentored by Lewis in his TAC years and Lewis can now school Jack in this regard (of course in addition to setting standards, aggressive play etc etc.

It is just sooooooooooo good to have an on-field General, no offence to Jones and et al.
