Problem with Etihad, is that for a non-tenant, it is a waste of money.  The AFL could have received this in another 9 years for $30!

I just don't like going there, especially compared to Level 2 Southern Stand premium area at the mighty MCG!

I'm not just talking Melbourne or indeed AFL games, you can also include cricket and A-League in there, where without paying exorbitant sums for a decent
seat, you're shunted off up onto level 3..while you gaze longingly at the vast emptiness that is level 2 and all the wing seats on level 1. 
Wanna park underneath the stadium? Don't expect much change out of $30

Wanna bring your own food in, to avoid the ripoff prices inside the stadium? Sorry you can't do that, we've got catering contract revenues to protect inside.

Wanna have a kick of the footy outside the ground? Sorry whatever spare meter-age we once had vacant, we've now sold off to developers to build some much
needed apartment complexes out of non fire-retardant cladding.

Wanna eat at a nice restaurant by the water just a 5 minute walk from the ground pre-game? Sorry most of those retail spaces are now for lease, all previous tenants
drive out by the relentless punishing icy winds that blow across the frozen tundras of Harbortown Drive.

Wanna buy some merchandise from the main merch shop? Thanks, the profits go directly to the Essendrugs WADA repayment fund.

Will the AFL, now they've shelled out hundreds of millions of dollars that could've been invested in grassroots and womens footy, all of a sudden become a charitable
benefactor to the four tenant clubs, one of which desparately wants to move to the MCG now the place isn't run by a former President of theirs? I doubt it

Will they also rip up the minimum games per year contract that exists, forcing MCG based clubs to play home games there? I also doubt it.

Also kudos to whoever signed the agreeement upon building this festering abhomination banning boutique stadiums being built at a similar capacity for goodness knows how many years, which now means that teams like Victory and the Storm regularly have the issue of their relatively brand new stadium now not being big enough a capacity.

This following article is also very informative on what was originally planned at Waverley. It lists a sale price of $102M. The original  Waverley plan was for a stadium accommodating 150,000 people (123K seated...31K standing)

i haven't stepped inside that shoddy stadium since the day Tracky Pants did his collarbone, the one exception was the AC/DC Concert in 2010

The issue of the second level reserved seating needs to be looked at closely. The medallion club members could easily be required to go online and register their attendance intention say 48 hours in advance.

Remaining seats could be released to the public for a small mark up.

The stadium alignment is not a problem at night and the roof closure does provide atmosphere.

The real problem is that AFL needs a circular ground and therefore the stadium has difficulty accommodating other codes and entertainments. People may recall that there were slide out seating that reconfigured the ground. This went with all the turf problems that beset the ground in its early years.

In truth Melbourne is very lucky with its sporting stadiums compared with almost anywhere in the world.

Melbourne Victory had some of their games last year  at this hell hole with the retractable lower level seats brought it. So they can and do still use this 'feature', albeit sparingly.

It still didnt change the atmosphere one iota at these games...

They use it for A league games quite often.

The turf is much better now, the real issues come when they hold concerts or events right before the start of footy season.

I bet we still get our home game there. Why would the AFL give money to the MCG when they can have our Etihad game and take money from us?

Will be interesting to see what happens with Geel, Rich, Haw, Coll and us all not enjoying the occasional 1-2 home games there a year.

Eddie will do his lid if the Pies still have to play there.

Was thinking of going to the Socceroos game against Japan  but the view from level 3 leaves a lot to be desired. Went to AAMI park to watch a few of the Asian Cup games and was blown away by the closeness of the experience

Who is to say the AFL wont make more than 200mil form the venue in the next 9 years and therefore coming out in front.

Raffle the chance to press the button or depress the Wile E Coyote style plunger. That'd recoup some of the cost.

Sell the rubble as souvenirs.
