Nominations for the new Richmond Board

Why does everyone rate Gale so highly? How does he escape criticism?
What was a promising build a few years ago, has now all gone sour on under his tenure.
He is the man who should ensuring Hardwick has an efficient football dept structured to match best practice, with competent support staff.

At the very least, he is responsible for the off-field, which includes being in the bottom bracket for value of sponsorship contracts - all despite a large following and high profile.

Chris you never disappoint. A serious and considered response. You rose to my bait but did so splendidly and provided a very excellent summary of the role of a Board.

Apologies Hemingway, I appear to have missed the sarcasm in your post, which as per usual was beautifully written. I am glad I didn't disappoint you though.

How do you know this Mach5?

I know everything.
But seriously, I read it in a news article this morning, can't remember where though.

Even the title of "CEO of Football" would indicate that beyond being a nice and engaging bloke, Gale is just not up to it, at least on the footy side of things.

Wow the mutual admiration society in full swing.

If you were Dion Prestia how could you join this club? a senior coach with his career on a knifes edge, on the very edge of a 4-5 year re-build, star players looking at the door, total disunity on every level of the footy club,

makes you wonder if he might go back to his manager and ask him to call clubs like Melbourne, Carlton, Hawthorn back and say a pay cut is worth not going anywhere near that joke of a club.

I reckon the offers are no where near the Tigers over Abe

I agree, but spitballing amounts, 500k is a pretty good salary in a team on the rise likely to play finals, or 750k to play through a re-build and a club in as bad a shape as RIchmond, imo they're every bit as bad as Brisbane in a lot of ways.

if he wants to go there for money we're very lucky he's not coming to us haha

We know more than anyone getting a footy club right requires more than one section to fire to succeed.

You can have the best recruitment team but it counts for nothing if you have no player development.

You can have the best tactical coach but it counts for nothing if the players are no good.

You can have the best team but it counts for nothing if your fitness and medical staff can't keep them on the park and firing in September.

You can have the most members but who cares if you can't win a premiership.

You can have collingwood on the ropes in the last quater and just need the ball to bounce the right way for you in the dying seconds of a grand final for Ross Lion and Stephen Milne to be remembered very differently.

You need so much to go right at a footy club and it has to start with the board.

Not if he thinks it'll be his last contract. I don't blame him at all for getting the most cash for the most years he can, given his injuries he might not get another chance.

The fact that Richmond will be paying is just icing :)

I guess that's the tough thing, a 23? year old getting offered huge dollars even though he is injury prone is hard to knock back, regardless of how he goes this contract sets him up for life, the down side is contracts don't mean much, look at Hamish Hartlett.

Sure, but Port can't just break the contract if they want to get rid of him. And Hartlet can reject a trade if it's for less money.

Though didn't Goddard join Essendon before that club's particular problems were known? Prestia, on the other hand, would be joining Richmond with the full knowledge that the club is a basket case.

Of course. But similar outcome.

Goddard could have played finals this year if he had stayed with the Aints.

I regard him as a complete Tool.

Let's play AFL Board Challenge Bingo.

Take a drink every time one of challengers utters one of these phrases:

  • empower the members
  • worlds best practice
  • too long complacent
  • immediately search for best available coach (two drinks if it's an "exhaustive" search)
  • setting standards throughout the club from top to bottom
  • rightful place at the top of the ladder
  • legacy of Tommy Hafey
  • core business of football

Shame on you for the missing out on the time honoured "process".

And he has stuffed up any legacy he may have had at the Aints.

The tigers may no longer be offering that same amount to Prestia, as the men who offered it may no longer be there come the trade period.

True, but those who replace the current lot might make even worse decisions. You never know.

As an aside, someone mentioned the other day that Richmond fans once dumped chook poo outside punt rd. Is that right? I might be too young to remember because I certainly think it would have made an impact! If true, that's hilarious.

So far the challengers have said they will run at the next AGM which may well be after the trade period.

By the time any new board were to take over Prestia may have a five year contract in his back pocket.

True story.
I would have been a teenager myself, but the supporters backed a truck in there and emptied a full truckload of manure infront of the gates to Punt Road.
During Frawley's time in the hot seat maybe?

250k over 5 years ($1mill) is a lot of money to turn down 'Abe', particularly in a career that could end with 1 injury or accident.

The inference to be made, therefore, is that Prestia is an incomplete one.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
