You are now showing your ignorance Stuie, Trengove is not a "Dumb" player but rather, others think quicker and smarter in footy sense and therefore are in better spaces to get the ball! That PLUS his lack of pace are telling!

Correction if you had played the game you would know that! That's why champions are just that! they think quicker, know where to go and are "Instinctive"

Yes, he never should have been made captain at such a young age.  So he did what we wanted him to do. We thru him to the wolves.  And just maybe we caused his threatening injury as well.

Yes we owe him, just as he owes us, to give his all.

I can 100% promise you JT is not a dumb footballer, he is if not the sharpest footballer at our club, top 2-3. 

he has a new contract so regardless of what you or i think he will be playing next year, and he'll have a full pre season to prove he isn't done yet. 

i would prefer to wish him all the best rather than suggest we delist a contracted former captain.

Wtf are you even on about? You're one of those typical old blokes who talks about the brilliant career you had, when the reality was you were a soft outside wingman who would have screamed like a shot pig both times you ever got near enough the ball to be tackled. 

Trengove was never about this year, it was all about rehab and getting his injury right. The 20 odd games he played is a massive bonus, especially a few in the seniors. This preseason he will slim down, work on his agility and speed and next year we will have a bloke back who not only is physically better prepared, but mentally confident in his body too.

Yeah, let's be honest here. He was omitted from the seniors as he wasn't quite up to speed when he played mid year. The fact that you and I see he isn't covering the ground that well yet would mean the Melbourne coaches, fitness staff  and development guys would all have seen this as well. At worst, they try to work on his agility and fail, we have a handy 20-30 ranked player on our list who is a good influence and leader on a young squad. 

At best, he improves the agility and gets confidence in his body, and we end up with a smart, tough, skillful mid- forward in the Bartel mould.

Players who will rotate in and out of other roles that are ahead of him:
Garlett, Kent, Hunt, Harmes, Melksham*, Hibbard*
*Havent played so dont 100% know how they will fit but they wernt picked up for Casey

Players on par with him:
ANB, Bugg, Kennedy, JKH 

If he gets into the senior side consistantly (without relying on a mass injury crisis) I'll put my hand up and say I'm wrong... but it would just about take an act of God for him to get close let alone make it past those blokes. I just look at that and cant see why they would have renewed his contract other than sentiment.

Because he's a highly talented and highly professional young player, absolute aerobic beast and if he can pick up a little more speed with a full pre season he could easily be the hard running mid we currently desperately lack, he'd be getting paid peanuts and worst case scenario provides strong leadership and depth at VFL level, keeps pressure on the seniors, there is absolutely zero risk in giving him another year and potential for significant reward. 

the issue with your point of view is you're making this call based on the now, in his first 2 years i'd have Trenners ahead of at least half of your top list, the club is clearly backing him to recapture his pre injury form.

people seem to forget just how good he was before his injury, and forget that we lose very little- nothing by giving him another year.

People are too sentimental some times.

Trengove is currently one of the slowest midfielders to play the modern game. The game is evolving into an end-to-end, slingshot affair, with manic defensive pressure the full length of the ground.

If Trenners is not used as an attacking option, he is finished as a top lever footballer, because if his opponent isn't limping with a broken leg, he is incapable of catching anyone.

Whose "best 22" at the start of the year bore any resemblance to the actual 22 running out in the last month of the season?

Things change, players come in and out of form. Players hit a hot streak. Others hit a cold streak.

I'm not predicting anything for Trengove. Not saying he "will" be best 22 , regular 22, or regular Casey.

But things change. If he's given a role, and performs it consistently, he can end up regular 22. Same goes for any player.

Unfortunately, Jack won't make it as a player, so the decision to re-sign him is without doubt political and cultural IMO. Normally I'd be against signing someone of his output, but given what he's been through and the resilience he's shown, these are unusual circumstances worthy of recognition.

Nobody except for Clarrie was breaking tackles yesterday. The problem was that nobody was running to receive a handball, and when they were (esp first half), the handball missed them and it caused a turnover. When that happens a few times, everybody stops running.

I was surprised watching Swans vs Geelong how slow Heeney is in a footrace. Doesn't do his game a lot of harm though.

I'd compare Trengove's first season to Brayshaw's, and maybe even a little better. He was on track to become a total freak, and there were plenty of comparisons to Jimmy Bartel. Makes his decline so much harder to swallow, but I truly believe he can get himself back to the point where he is a regular in the 22. He is a guy of immense character and football talent.
