Tim Taranto snaps a goal on the left foot and the lead goes out to 37 points.

I reckon there will be a few players drafted this year out of the Sandringham Dragons - there is a lot of class in this team.

Apart from Setterfield, McGrath and Taranto, I've been mightily impressed by Jack Scrimshaw, a tall running left-footed defender who would fit nicely into any team because he looks very versatile (last week spent some time forward).

I'm not sure where he fits in draft calculations but he's definitely a prospect.

That's it 13.13.91 to 4.6.30 - a comprehensive win for the Sandy Dragons who meet the Geelong Falcons in next week's preliminary final.

Those 4 probably all go first round and almost certainly before our first pick unless we do some big time trading.

How was Dan Allsop??

Had little influence playing in a backline that was badly beaten.

The player I did like from the Stingrays was La Fontaine - and I'm still wondering if he's related to the club's early B & F winner, Alan.

We have no 1st rounder and have to trade a second round pick to get Hibberd It looks as if it's essential that we therefore trade out one player so that we can take advantage of the draft depth to have at least one pick in the 20s. Follow that up with a 3rd round pick and upgrade Josh Wagner and Mitch White and that's about it.

Scrimshaw is very talented. I think the West Coast will grab him at pick 12-13.  They have grabbed talented Vics like Gaff and Duggan, and prefer skilled lefties.

Matt La Fontaine is unlikely to be drafted but has impressed in the 3 matches I saw of the Stingrays. Maybe a rookie.  Dees should consider just for the nostalgia !!

The talent of the Dragons' list is underlined by the post I put up on the 2016 AFL Draft Prospects thread where I cited the Big Board 3.0 top 25 of Inside Football's Brett Anderson. He has four Dragons in his top eight (five in the 25).

They play Geelong Falcons today at IKON Park, a game I'm going to miss due to my grandson's basketball grand final but I recommend keeping an eye on this one.

The Dragons' area has been good to Melbourne in recent years Watts, Gawn, Brayshaw, Salem and Hunt (although he didn't make their squad) all were recruited from there and Chris Dawes was a Dragon before going to Collingwood.

And the Dragons are in the Grand Final - they win by 22 points.

Hugh McCluggage was just announced the winner of this year's Morrish Medal.

Good to hear he hasn't been dragging his tail Jack.

McGrath  bit stiff to not be named in the bests, sounds like he was very influential again for Sandy.

Should be a ripping final with plenty of AFL prospects on show for both sides. Could be 5 or 6 from this years top 10 playing on Sunday.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
