Their Trading position is a gift.

Perhaps I'm being a little cynical SWYL. It's a gift that keeps on giving though. And it makes a lie of an even competition.

Watched the game today. Gws will win 2 of the next 5 flags. I wouldn't think this year is one of them but you never know.

They are just loaded with talent, haven't seen anything quite like it. Just handcrafted by the AFL to dominate.

I agree. But the situation is here.

We can only beat them otherwise the last 3 years will mean nothing.

They throw us their scraps and we pay top odds for them, we have to play hard ball and stop giving them high end picks for surplus players. They trade two good players to us and pick up one elite player, they don't need the two good players and are happy to top up their elite squad.

I understand that we were in a unique position and needed an influx of talent but I'd hope that we won't do that again, they need to shed players, but we don't need to continue to trade top picks for them.

You are right of course. It just pizzes me off that they will probably play in a Grand Final this year and (against the whole modus operandi of establishing a draft system) they will further improve their position relative to every other club bar Gold Coast. You cannot tell me that's fair.

Their list is so young and given the pipeline of first round picks they have lined up in the coming drafts, the top pick talent that can't get a game that they will be able to trade out and their academy talent I think you can lock them in to be contending for the next 10 years! The AFL have created a monster and don't write off the Suns to follow them.

It is worth remembering that in 2015 draft (four years after their debut)  GWS still had three picks in the top 18 (the first round). Only one of them (Jacob Hopper) played today.

To make it worse here is an article from a few years back which reports they entered their second year with 25 first round draft picks on their team.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/rivals-tip-juggernaut-as-greater-western-sydney-amasses-top-draft-picks/story-fnejogoj-1226492961889

And of course as a result of the Treloar trade they now have a pick in this years draft at pick 7 along with their own.

I am sure someone will do the math but I can count 30 first round picks without even trying !!!!

I read that they have 3 first round picks again this year.  Plus something for Marchbank and McCarthy.

The concessions they received were ridiculous and we are now seeing the results.

It may be good for the MFC. We have to get better as a complete club. We have nowhere to hide.

Recruiting is as important as coaching now.

So far Taylor and Mahoney have nailed. This MUST continue.

Clubs like GW$ have a margin for error. We have none.

That game was brutal today and they stood up to, then stood over Sydney, who are one of the most hard at it sides in the competition.

The Older players in Mumford, Stevie J and Shaw started it but the younger brigade didn't take a backward step.

We should make sure that all our players watch this game so they understand what it takes to win a final.

GW$ in The GF will increase TV Ratings. That's what the Commission want.

I'd dispute the first bit SWYL

The key to a successful future for them is to keep their better players and fit them into their salary cap (if they do in fact have one) as the players mature and demand more money. They have a lot of talent that will demand big coin in the next 3-5 years. Far more young talent than us.

You must think East Coast of Australia...If GW$ are in those numbers will be a massive NEW AUDIENCE

That is what they want.

I agree. But surely they can't keep all midfield stars. We'll be ripe to snag one or two over the next few years

GWS have 5 picks in the first 35. 3 in the first round. Plus draft whispers that Saints will offer pick 10 for Steele and Marchbank.

That's how it works, they trade two NQR players who have a bit of talent but are surplus to needs for a top ten pick, as long as that continues they will grow stronger and we will stand back and watch them.

it's a bit like getting your elder brothers hand me down clothes when your parents buy him new ones.

not only that, they can also pick up top discounted academy picks without even using a first round pick

I like that..... I can remember pinching my brother's suit... if we both wanted to go out to the dance together ..there was trouble

Yes to you younger ones.. you had to wear a suit to get into the Crock and the Berg !!

They were given the same rights as the Gold Coast but have been much smarter. The AFL had to get them up and about, what's the point of having them finish last for 15 years. We have had 150 years to get it right and in the days of no salary cap or draft we had every opportunity.

Incredible foresight by those in charge and they should take a bow as this club wins premierships for the next decade.

Interesting post what point are you trying to make?

May the pox descend upon them and all their sporn.

Had trouble finding the quote but very similar was forthcoming from a sermon given before the Duke of Marlborough

From what I can gather from the surrounding text it was a wish that the pox would fall on the wealthy so that they would give a little more.

Quite apposite in the case of GWS..... may a pox be on both their houses !!

They were given much more than the GC.  From memory GC had access to 1 year at the draft, GWS were given 2.

No doubt GWS have played it very smart, but they weren't the same concessions.

St Kilda might only be the start. I would like to see the activity on this thread immediately after the upcoming  trading period. The obscene amount of early draft picks (entirely at the expense of Melbourne and the other cellar-dwellers), combined with the Academy farce, will stand as a wonderful legacy of Demitriou (as the highest $aleried so-called executive in Australian $porting historry)!
