Changes vs. Adelaide

I have been watching the diamond closely and the zone has become almost 1 on 1 for stoppages behind centre. More often than not they will have a particular man they are on when the ball is back and they have space when the ball is forward. Yes, we get caught out of position and be forced to rotate when there is quick coast to coast movement but there is more accountability for each individual defender than there was earlier in the season.

Well that makes sense, why did it take so long to address this issue. Still think our defensive set up is poor and we are not proactive enough on match days to address what  seem to be glaring issues and deficiencies.

If we are not putting great pressure on Adelaide they will smash us with run and contested marking

I agree , essentially, but here we have two really good exponents of players able to take any opportunity and make you pay. I rate both Tex and Josh, they are very  VERY capable players. Tex especially if he gets a sniff of a 'special ' day he just goes to town.  I'll be frank I rate them a lot more than I rate our defence !!  just saying

I'm not convinced they are happy about the change but it is more of a necessity. This will work better when executed correctly but it requires constant structual changes from zone to 1on1 which if 1 person does that too slow we are even more vaulnerable than if everyone is in the zone.

Your last line on about pressure is true of any team, we have alot of slow players so we will struggle to chace anyone on the outside.

Oh no doubt they are fantastic but i think Frost and Tmac are strong enough to make marking difficult. No they arnt as good players but you dont have to be a star to make a contest. If we can limit their marking and Jetta can keep Eddie in check then we have a good shot at limiting their scoring... somewhat. Its on the rebound that they will tear us appart. Turnovers will happen but they need to be contested turnovers not uncontested because they are just too good in space over the back.

I dont think we will win, but we should be able to put up a very decent fight. Unfortunatly we all know what we are capable of dishing up on any given week, good and bad. Just gotta hope we are fired up after the bye, Adelaide will be.

Adelaide will be pumped...very pumped. The pressure on our backs will be intense for at least the first 10-15 mins. If they don't hold then. Ill call it now..game over. If we can actually get the ball forward during this first half of the qtr  we can make a fist of it and it might be a fairly interesting game.

The game will be won or lost on our defending...god help us

This is a winnable game.

T. McDonald to Walker, Frost to Jenkins, O. McDonald to Lynch and Jetta to Betts are solid match-ups.

i know I am p.......in the wind, but I would rather have some experience and toughness (whoever that may be) than O.McDonald. The other match ups are fine,

What about Mcgovern? he took more marks than both Lynch and Jenkins on the Thursday. Liked the look of him actually, havent seen much other than that game. He isnt quite on the level of the others week in, week out but he is playing a very good role stretching the defence making them difficult to deal with.

As long as Jetta stays with him!

In that case, we're doomed.

Wagner on McGovern.

Can't think on anyone else.

Also Hunt on Cameron.

Interested who they will play on Hogan..Watts..Dawes...Petracca...Kent....Gartlett (if he plays) etc...I think our forward can be pretty lethal ...how's their backline in terms of matching up

??

Last week they fielded this defence

Lever   Hartigan   Brown

Laird      Talia      Cheney

Talia is in All Australian form. Laird has been great from his limited games, he will provide the run off half back.

I would love to have Lever in our side. Shame we missed out on him. Hartigan is no slouch. Not sure about Brown.

Brodie Smith is on the bench and will mix in with the defence.

Too late to move deck chairs. We're 2/3 of the way to the bottom of the Marianas trench. There is no hope of the dees ever winning a game again! Let's all shoot ourselves !!!!!

For goodness sake can we lighten up a bit and exude some positivity. We're not dead and buried yet. It's 5 days till we lose this game.

I'm positive about the season as a whole, but in terms of changes this week I'm not sure there are any that will actually effect the result of the match. The Crows are a step above us at this point. and I suspect another week of minimal changes to the side is on the cards given the break

Fair enough, they probably are. The stability of few changes is not a bad thing for us. I think we can challenge the crows but getting the chockies this week might be a bridge too far. I am an optimist so I'm looking forward to seeing a fight.

Hope it is a dry track, we could see one hell of a shoot out.

So talia will probably stand hogan which is fine because he'll usually take the best defender ..so if our forwards who are not quite as tall but more mobile...our midfield which is arguably more talented & Gawn (arguably best ruckman at the moment ) control the game ...we could do ok....once again we need everyone to stay on top for four quarters ( that is what Adelaide have over us ...more experience) four qrt effort ...we win

Melbourne area
Cloudy. Slight (30%) chance of a shower later in the day. Winds north to northwesterly 20 to 30 km/h.

Could be dry but we cannot match Adelaide in a shootout. They are too good. I like our chances but not in a shootout against the most efficient scoring team in the comp. In close contested game will give us a better chance, we are nr 2 clearance team going around, we should be playing to our strengths.

Anyone get to training and can comment on how the group looked, who was doing what?  It would be appreciated!

I got there for about an hour.

Plenty of kicking, handpassing and marking.  Lots of running, they did that well.  There was a good selection of different coloured footy boots too.

Found out that some support Arsenal, others Man Utd.  There was one who supported Leicester but that was a bandwagon jumper, chap.

Took an unbelievable amount of photos of their arms and legs.  Got one player while they were bending over too.

I also took the opportunity to tell every single player how poor they are and what they need to improve on.  Surprisingly they took it well, told them not to look at Demonland as they do the same thing there but it doesn't hold any weight as it's not in person.

Any questions feel free to ask.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
