Don't agree with your "most" comment doc.

But by today's standards they got very little.

All players had day jobs you could not live off your football wages.

Foot ball wages were a top to your lifestyle.

The good players used to leave the VFL and Play in the Country and VFA because the wages were a lot higher for the better players.

It's easy to say next year, BUT I'VE HAD ENOUGH NEXT YEAR'S. Given the form our midfield's in, the fact Tippett's out, Sydney are gettable.  We're inconsistent, we're young but that doesn't mean finals should be out of the equation.

We would need to, for a change, win every "should win" game and pinch another or two.

Wishful?  Hopeful?  Dreaming is still allowed.

Dream away mate it has keep most of us going this last decade.

Just had a quick look at the dogs last year as we are in age and experience, not to mention development, about a year behind them. 

At this point last year they were 6 and 5 (had a bye) and had played 6 of the eventual finalists.

They finished the year with 8 and 3 including only playing 2 more of the eventual finalists.

We are 6 and 6 having played 4 teams in the 8. We have a bye and 10 games left this year with 5 of the teams in the 8 to come. 

I was hoping to find an indication of a rise like they had but it wasn't to be found here. We really to win a game against one of the teams in the 8 to have any chance. If we go 6 and 4 (win all out of 8 and one in the 8) for the rest of the year we finish on 12 wins, that may be enough but our percentage would need to be great. Win two of the games of those in the 8 and all of those out of the 8 and we will play finals. 

I gave up on finals during the Port game but somehow have a sniff of finals again. Lose this week and that wont return for another 6 months.

They played as Amateurs. By the sixties they were few and far between but from my memory Doc Roet was one. I am confident  he played as an amateur in the 64 premiership.

A very good question.

you have to understand back then most big time sport was amateur.

Olympics, tennis and cricketers got very little.

it was a very different world.

some people want to maintain their "Pure Amateur" status.

must seem very strange to you but that was the world was  back half a century ago.

Pretty sure we wont make it but very happy to be proved wrong. Im tipping 11 wins.

Spot On. Half way mark of the season & we are alive. I think anyone under 45 here can't remember the against all odds fight we produced in the late 80's to make it happen. So many emerging players back then just like 2016. Destiny is still in our hands. Anything can & is way overdue to happen. This season definitely has that 1987 feel to it.

 

The issue is who will fall out to give us the slightest of chances. Funnily enough, if you look at who they play in the run home, I reckon Norf are vulnerable.

Agreed but the ones in 9th , 10th and 11th have to make up the ground IMO they are not capable of doing it.

North might drop a bit but I cannot see us or anyone else replacing them at this point.

Wishful thinking. However, I do see them dropping like a stone though and that's a good thing.

This is more the question. Not what we impact, but who falls over.

Seems very improbable we will get over the line.

We play a far few sides above us, win an upset or two and The cards can fall.

It depends on our senior players

Play like yesterdays 1st quarter and we will be bottom 4..If the Senior players lift we are a chance.

I hope this mob ends up better than the team in the late 80s/early 90s. Although they produced some wonderful memories and occasions, and made the finals every year between 1987 and 1991, they never finished above 4th at the end of the home and away season in a 14 team comp. To be brutal, they weren't good enough.

So there was a prestige attached to playing for no money?

We need to get on a roll and it has to start next game or at the very latest, against the Crows. 

If we win either of those games (or both) there is no reason why we can't string a number of wins together.  Do that and we will be in the finals race by default.   

So, we'll have to win one of the next 2 games to have any chance.  What's holding the team back is more match game experience, true belief & real confidence - if we can achieve the 2 latter aspects, that lack of experience will be less of a factor.

However  by 1964 the number was very low.

I don't believe there were any others in that GF.

A loss this week would make it very hard.  If we lost this week we would absolutely have to beat the Crows in a few weeks time, as they are one of the only teams we have a shot at pegging back.

Conditional Prediction: if we beat Sydney we will make the 8.

I think our mid field is ready and if Dawes stays fit our forward line (at least the attacking part...see below). A fit Maxy could take us in.

The worry for me is that backline. Great runners, read the ball well, intercept ok and play the zone/press pretty well when it's had a chance to set up deeper up the ground. But one on one some of the youngsters would be severely exposed especially the young key talls like Omac & Frost. Pretty much all of our backmen, apart from Nev & Vince, also don't know when to play slow. Their initial dash is great but they often just kick blindly instead of steadying when not much on offer up forward. 

In addition they often choose the wrong option (eg, don't see the 45s when coming along the boundary under a bit of pressure) or just cant hit a target when trying for those 45s (Tmac one of the worst offenders here). Need a really solid defence to reach finals.

in addition I still haven't seen the defensive pressure needed in our forward 50 on a consistent basis although QB showed improvement. Guess we need to see how it goes with Dawesy back. Might be on the up a little from here but the jury's out for me on this bit.

We are close but still a little way off and might struggle against most teams from here outside of the Dockers, Suns and the Blues. At best we Might snaffle 3 more wins but wouldn't be enough.
