POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 11

I think Jones was good. Too often we scrubbed the ball forward, which is good wet weather footy, but our forwards were either out of position or caught behind.

It's a credit to our structures and team pressure around the contest today that we were close. The midfield of Jones, Tyson and Vince (who all worked really hard and got a heap of it) is pretty much our 2014 midfield. Granted guys like Oliver went in occasionally (though he looked sore today, but it was basically our B midfield. This brings me back to the midfield issue that we keep debating on Demonland. As soon as Viney goes down, we look thin in there for class. Oliver, Tyson, Vince occasionally. Desperately need more A graders to compete with the better midfields.

Mate Dawes was our second worst on field behind Garlett. Get your facts right and look at the stats.

Ben Ken would've had a much bigger impact then Dawes if playing.

Dawes is a crap mark in dry weather no chance in the wet. Garlett can be very ineffectual & needs 2 b benched when he's not putting in.

It should be an embarrassment to the umpire panel and the AFL that the opposing coach has gone on record as saying the head high situation has to change. Clarkson says that the ducking is a bad result for the game and it could be changed with a flick of the fingers (or a flick of a switch for dumbar%$ umpires who don't have clue! Drop the stupid P&ricks!)

As usual Jeff Garlett goes missing against a decent opposition...  the bloke is a pretender and should go back to Casey next week

We need to make a statement. Harmes 2

Really worried about Garlett. Signs a new contract and goes missing.

Frost was good in the backline!

Harmes needs a spell. Ten touches at 20 percent efficiency is terrible.

If you win the contested footy and the clearances you have to convert. A waste otherwise.

Have a feeling Hunt will be something special. Looks a gun.

Gee 20 percent is crud.

Haven't listened to Clarko's presser but happy to hear he's gotten on the front foot. Hopefully the AFL don't derp around too much and just fix it.

He doesn't get tackled though, he knows how to buy himself time.

There r lots of slow players Mitchell (Dorks) Trenners will get better he has a footy brain, whilst Harmes has speed he has no footy smarts & needs time @ Casey.

Mate I was alive and well in the 70s and 80s and remember those years well. It all adds up on one another. Today just got to me.

I felt the same way after the essendon game this year.

I went to the same game last yr and the carlton one and i expected us to blow them away! I now realise that the losses are now due to inexperience and poor composure/decision-making. We are improving, but its a slow burn. Probably 2 years before we see the benefit. Only 50 games for max is a good reminder.

Midfield was a strong point. Tyson is looking pretty special. Viney out was a blessing in disguise as it let Vince follow the ball inside of being pushed onto a flank.

Trengove's return was a pass mark, despite getting caught a bit he kept at it.

Garlett was really disappointing. He still ran, but had no clean possessions and misjudged the ball completely. We needed him to kick a couple in those conditions

Petracca could improve with ball in hand.

Mixed bag from Dawes, forward pressure was good early, lead up to half forward and dished off some nice handpasses but he has to start marking, even in the wet that was a sitter in the pocket.

We had some really good spoiling efforts in defence today.

Didn't watch the game but i have questions.

What position did Trengove play for majority of the game and how did he go?

How did Frost go down back?

Oliver will eventually be A grade. Best ball user/Decision maker/evader of the lot . Vince was fantastic today also. Jones/Tyson got alot of It but decision making/disposal of Jones was (at times) horrid and didnt have the polish/penatration needed to have a huge Impact when he could have.

Nice effort from the mid field, especially with Gawn dropping away In the 2nd half.

Stretch/Hunt solid. What the hec was Garlett doing today. Admittedly  conditions didnt suit him and some of the delivery not great but he was almost unsighted

Another dissapointing loss to this mob when the chance was there to get them at a low ebb ( troop wise).

Trenners seemed to play a high half forward/stint in the middle type of role today and got better as the game went on.  He had 17 touches and took time getting in to the game.  Nothing to knock him for though and he'll be better for the run.

Frost did alright down back, gave a contest and didn't do anything too bad.  A pass mark from me.

Tyson was absolutely fantastic, particularly in the second quarter when we were pushing hard.

Loved watching Trengove out there today. While he wasn't hugely influential, he showed some glimpses that highlight how good he could be if he has an extended run in the team.

Harmes needs a spell in the VFL. I love the kid, but unfortunately he was completely lost and ineffectual.

Finally it's happened! Frost in the backline! He wasn't half bad either, and seemed far more involved than he was when he was being played as a forward

Although he's as raw as an uncooked steak, Oscar played his best game for the club today. Needs to work on his defensive game but otherwise he was fairly solid for a 20 year old key position defender.

Jayden Hunt continues to impress. While he's by no means dominating or accumulating huge numbers, I love the way he goes about his football.

Were Hawthorn playing soccer? I lost count of how many times they kicked the ball off the ground (and annoyingly, how many of them landed straight into the hands of a teammate).

An encouraging effort overall. Dissapointed, but not surprised that we weren't able to get over the line. Hawthorn are a very experienced team, and albeit their recent form, know how to win games such as this.

Hard to say what position he played because of the conditions players were everywhere but he looked like he was in the midfield and across half back. He was solid, looks about the same as before he was injured to me.

Frost wasn't great, but looks far better down back and a few times his was pace was a real asset.

Good positives from today. It's hard to believe Jayden Hunt has only played a handful of games. The boy is gutsy, has sure hands and a quick mind, and then there's the pace. Same things to say about Billy Stretch and Christian Petracca. Good returns from Dawes and Trenners. If Dawes stays fit, he makes the forward line opportunities for Jeffy (when it's dry!), Kent, Petracca and Kennedy (when in form) much better. Trenners showed his smart reading and disposal and got the feel of the game more as it went on. It's great to see him back out there. Dom Tyson was best on ground today, he is vital to our midfield, and hasn't reached his ceiling. Oscar MacDonald showed why the club rates him. For his height he's actually developing quickly. He's going to be a very good player. Watching Sam Frost down back was just a big sigh of relief. Big, competitive, fast, thats his spot, leave him there. He made some disposal errors, as does Josh Wagner, but they look like long term backliners to me. The rest we know about.

The Hawks were always going to ease out the game in the last quarter with their cool heads, it was that predictable. Bernie Vince needs to pull his head in and the umpires need to stop awarding dangerous and dishonest ducking behaviour now. It's an absolute blight on football.

Wing. He was ok. But lack of pace to break the lines a concern if he's staying on the wing and he was caught a couple of times in the Hawks pressure, as a lot of our players were.

Frost was pretty good. Can make a spoil, and he can break the lines with pace, but his disposal and lack of awareness might hurt back just as much as it did forward.

Though frustrated & angry at losing to those [censored] heads.....

Need to remember 125 vs 63 average games played & 4x premiership players vs Petracca, Oliver etc playing 10thgame....

Trengove played on the wing for majority of the game and personally I thought frost was very solid in defence. Not only did frost defend well he offered a lot of dash and rebound out of the back 50, to do what he did today in these conditions for a man that's 194cm just showed his athleticism!

The mids battled manfully  evidenced by winning the CP and clearance count. We tended to hoof it in hope a bit more than the oppo, but today mainly showed that the forward line remains a work in progress. They smashed us on tackles in forward 50 and the difference between Breust, Gunston, Rioli and Puopolo compared to Watts, Garlett, Kent and Harmes was stark. They have built up a cohesiveness that we simply don't have as yet.

Defensively we looked less vulnerable on transition today than we have in previous weeks. The weather no doubt was a factor in that but it seemed like we were able to get numbers behind the ball and stop their momentum at different stages.

I would liken today's performance as not dissimilar to that against Richmond. Good endeavour for most of the day. Just a far better opponent.

We did not do a lot wrong.

Probably the best game we have played in many years.

Some dodgy frees against leading to direct goals

Cannot fault too many players.

Nice to see Mitchell and Gunston hobbling but we should have roughed them up more

May the HFC all catch the Ebola virus as soon as possible.

Coaching staff excluded.
