@Wilson7 On behalf of DL thanks for being among the first to use the new thumbs down feature. I'm genuinely interested to hear your side and on why you disagree.

From where I sit there's an awful lot of spruiking going on and it seems to be less about Kalani, more than happy to hear other sides though.

Jeff is a great guy layzie and you couldn't meet a nicer young man than Kalani.  He's proud of his boys, which he should be. I don't think it's fair to judge him or his intentions if you don't know the man.

Fair enough, I do appreciate your insight.

I've been involved with various facets of junior and senior sports administration for more than 40 years and I've come across a fair share of "ugly parents" as well as many supportive parents without whose encouragement and the sacrifices made by them in term of money and time, many great sporting careers would never have happened. Unless you know the people involved and their full story, it's unwise to jump in and comment on any specific case. I think Jeff's a proud parent and wish him and Kalani good luck - it's going to be an exciting time ahead for them. For my part, I look forward to the sight of a red and blue #34 jumping all over certain Collingwood players on a Kings Birthday in the future.

Can he actually play? Has he shown enough to suggest he's like Sam Darcy at a similar age?

I've watched him in the flesh at the under 15's stats national carnival when he represented QLD.

He's an athlete for sure but was pretty raw at the same time as most tall players that age. You could see those athletic traits indeed but at the time watching his performance, he didn't do much that got me overly excited, but that level isn't about who's going to be the next AFL star. So much water to go under the bridge.

The thing with Sam Darcy is that it was his last year of top age that really put him at the top end of draft calculations. Had a number of big games early on the 2021 season with Oakleigh Chargers and School Footy that really got recruiters talking.

Just remember with Sam Darcy, he missed out on under 16 selection for Vic Metro where as Kalani White was an All Australian defender at that level.

So just goes to show why you can't exactly determine a young players full talent at minor junior level.

Darcy has also improved as a footballer since he was drafted which shows the benefit to be gained from being in an elite system for learning.

In terms of Kalani White, he’s not going backwards either. He has a big season in front of him and if gets to an AFL club, whether MFC, GCS or anyone else, that’s where we’ll see improvement.

The article with Herald Sun

White said well over 200cm and and said 204cm to be exact

Your assertion is incorrect.

The author of the Herald Sun article you're referencing is simply regurgitating the miscalculation done by SEN's Sam Edmund from the said radio interview.

Barnes writes, ''Jeff White said Kalani had grown beyond 200cm and recently cleared that height in a high jump competition.''

Then Barnes writes, “He has just evolved and he has got taller, he is 6ft7 (204cm) now,” Jeff White told SEN.

Jeff never said, ''Kalani has grown beyond 200cm'', as stated by Barnes.  It's the journalists interpreation that Jeff said that, because he's assuming 6'7'' is 204cm.

All of this is based on the incorrect premise that 6'7'' is 204cm, which it isn't.

Kalani will be training with us for a week sometime before Xmas.

Not necessarily. Some improve, some don't and end up being delisted. All kids are drafted based on potential and talent.

There are no guarantees with any draftees once they hit the system. All comes down to the individual themselves and how hard they want to work for it.

Wouldn't beyond 200cm mean over 200cm lol

Kalani is exactly 200cm. He was measured this morning before training.

Ok, so here's Gawn & Kalani White at training today - this was taken when they were both almost the same distance from me.  Measuring their heights in pixels from the original version of this image gives the following:

  • Gawn: 1668 px
  • Kalani: 1627 px

Taking Gawn's height as the published 209 cm, this puts an estimate on Kalani's height at 203.86 ~ 204 cm (approx 6 ft 8 in) - though to be fair it does look like this would be inflated by an inch or so given Gawn is slouched just a little more than Kalani in this frame.

maybe they just ran out of tape at 2m?

🤪

Emotionally I want him at the club, but I'm with the 🤔 group atm on his abilities.

I posted his name on the 'Who needs to have a big year?' thread. Might settle us if he does!

You've got something in common with jellyfish.

The journalist is simply basing his reports on the radio interview, which I also happened to hear.

White said Kalani is now 6'7'' to wit Sam Edmund then said that 6'7'' is actually 204cm.

The journalist then reports White saying he's grown beyond 200cm, because the journalist is assuming Edmund's conversion of 6'7'' is correct.

White never uttered the words that ''Kalani has grown beyond 200cm''.  All he ever said was that Kalani was now 6'7''.  Enter Sam Edmund's incorrect interpretation of that height and here we are.  Incredible that you don't get it.

FCS it’s not hard. 6ft 7in equates to 200.66cm. So if Kalani was measured today at 200cm, as @Ghostwritersaid, then he is slightly less than 6ft 7in. Simple.

His own words: “I’m exactly 200cm… today. They measured me this morning before we came out.”

No lets all have an argument about it. 😉

Whatever, he is taller than Bowey and Spargo.

Haha nice job!

Time to end this height debate!

The bit above the withers is of little use (physically) for a ruckman.

Thoroughbred like Kalani, I reckon he's got 17 hands well covered.

By the time he finishes growing, he'll be taller than Bowey standing on Spargo's shoulders.
