But we got ravaged by injury las year BB if Kent vandenBerg and Salem had stayed fit hopefully this year we have a better standard of cover

I was making the point that they don't always pick a form team.  They have their favourites and they have a line through players either now or very early.

I reckon Jones and Terlich have a line through their names and something pretty dramatic will have to happen for that line to be removed.  Just as McKenzie did last year.

Jones is 28 and Terlich is prone to brain fades. Neither should get games this year IMO.  They are not future.

Oh, and just on the draw.  I agree with Pro and yourself that it doesn't mean much.  I'm of the view that it's better we don't play the weaker teams twice.  We need consistent play against good opposition, not the top teams but that middle group that if we are to be successful we need to be better than.  A few cheap wins against weak opposition won't do us any good, consistently good opposition will help us get to their standard and beyond - if we're good enough.

I'm not going to do it Saty because I don't really mind but I reckon you said the same thing last year.

Last year McKenzie was very good for Casey week after week and was overlooked while Lumumba was disappointing week after week.  Lumumba wasn't dropped and McKenzie wasn't elevated because the coaches knew that Lumumba had a future and McKenzie didn't (I'm not suggesting one for the other BTW).  The same thing will happen this year I reckon and Jones and Terlich will only get games if things are very bleak as they fit firmly into the McKenzie situation given a normal run of injury.

Don't think that is a fair comparison.  Jordie only had one string to his bow & that was his tackling/tagging ability.  He was one dimensional, slow, had poor disposal, no goal sense, couldn't mark & never racked up high stats.

Matt Jones has good speed, height & can play many positions - he is let down by decision making & disposal which at times can be horrible.

Ditto Terlich who is actually a bit of a ball magnet but tends to ball chase & loose his opponent as well as having disposal issues.

If either of these 2 can work on their deficiencies & play well they can be part of the team

NB Getting to the last year of contract makes them desperate.

Good summation about both Jones and Terlich, McCartney praised Terlich "for getting it right" when he helped create a coast to coast goal

I don't know why there's such angst about Terlich.

Clearly, unless you're a dope, he's not best 22.  But just as clearly, he deserves praise for his preseason.  He's lost wait and is running PB times.

This is a training report, not a best 22 thread.

Because ProDee you would be depriving the forum of a 'whipping boy', now that the Toump, Bail, Jordie Mc have gone, somebody needs to inherit the mantle

I do.  Super looking athlete for his age.  Man's body.

Yes can't wait for the intraclub match, we usually win that one, it's probably got something to do with our home ground advantage!

You know what im happy for Terlich playing out of his skin. Lets be honest his weaknesses is his kicking skills but one thing he does provide is run and dash out of the backline. He is by far not the worst player thats pulled on the jumper like some on here make out to be. Get his skills and decision making right and Terlich is a pretty handy player when full of confidence.

I agree dazzle. I thought he played some terrific games under Neeld and i thought his ability to run and carry and take some risks of HB were real positives. Yes his skills let him down sometimes, particularly when trying to cross the ball to the fat side but i suspect that is not the reason roos has not picked him.

Put bluntly his fitness has been nowhere near the level required but if as Pro Dee suggests he is working hard on that then all power to him. Like PD i also don't get the hate for him, nor for that matter Matt Jones. And comments suggesting either being selected are indicators we are going backwards are just plain dumb.

Such comments suggest players in their mid twenties can not go up a level, which may well be true in a general sense but there are any number of exceptions. Jobe Watson is one. A more relevant example is Kyle Cheney who we traded out for zilch. Kyle has gone on to carve out a good career with the hawks and the Crows. Jamie Benell is another.

In all honestly both Cheney and Bennell haven't carved out 'good careers'.. They are both battlers who are just depth players that's always in and out of the side.

Surprised Bennell didn't get cut last year.

This is the best training thread I've read in a long while. Thanks to those who've provided training reports.

The performance of Terlich in the match sim has really surprised me. He's clearly had a good preseason. Suspect he knows it's his last chance and is approaching this year accordingly.

That said, I've never had Matt Jones and Terlich in the same category. I reckon Matt Jones is a good player who can perform a role in the seniors. Think he's unfairly maligned by many here.

The performance of Frost as CHF also comes as a pleasant surprise. I know he's a great athlete etc, but it seems he's starting to deliver more than that. If he can become a decent CHF, our forward line will be very effective/dangerous this year.

Exciting times ahead. Hope that injury list reduces. Kind of immediately.

I have ruled a line through him. Does too many dumb things. Like falling into the back of players and giving away frees, repeatedly. We can't afford too many players with no footy brain.

I think you might have edited your post, as I thought you mentioned Terlich and his running.

Anyway...

Dean Terlich has lost weight and recorded a personal best in the three-kilometre time trial to give himself the best chance of performing well

Not entirely sure this is fair to Jordie.  At Casey he was consistently polling big numbers and was often in their best players.  I think the big problem for him was that he was told he needed to hurt the opposition, and that's where he fell down.  Big numbers in the middle weren't enough without hitting the scoreboard.

Now that this thread is about to be replaced with a fresh one for today's training, I think it's worth mentioning that this one may be the best training thread in Demonland history. Well done to all posters for (almost always) staying on topic and not allowing the thread to degenerate into personal abuse. And many thanks to the track watchers who give the rest of us the benefit of their observations.

Over the journey he has been bagged quite a deal on DL - turnover specialist etc etc. But more recently there have been at least 2 comments suggesting if he gets picked for the seniors it means we are going backwards. Which is silly because it is much more likely to mean terlich has raised his standards to a level where Ross will pick him. Indications are he is giving it a good crack.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
