Harsh call on Goodwin, especially when there's a guy on the list who very much loves the outside ball and not putting his body on the line. He tends to get games more often than not and actually had to drop himself last year.

I don't buy into the "he dropped himself", writing was on the wall. I also think the process of dropping a player (anyone not just Watts) only to bring them back in the following week doesn't serve its intended purpose. If a player is dropped this year it should be a minimum two weeks before he's even considered for a recall, make that player earn it.

i'm tipping essendon.

some of the top-ups that they've picked up are players who regularly star against us, and we're playing them at the stage in the season where they'll still be feeling fresh and not tired and aching after a half a year of footy on extremely limited preparation. they'll still be up and about when we face them.

bombers are optimistic of a huge turn-out for their first home game of the year, and after playing the suns up north they'll be galvanised and ready to have a big show. they'll be the talk of the media throughout the week leading up to the game. it'll be horrific to watch the fawning, particularly if they actually go okay against the suns, which they well might do as the top-up players are the sort of people who also tend to do well against the suns.

i for one live in terror of us doing the predictable and losing. we better not...

Half a dozen blokes doing  the Mitchell sledge with a few well chosen words every five minutes should do the trick.

I thought I read something somewhere that Kelly and a couple of the other players were unlikely to be ready to play in the first few rounds of the comp due to limited preparation.

For a second there you had me...thinking you were serious

This isn't Disneyland this is the AFL. These guys are past it. Melbourne will eat them up and spit them out, make no mistake.

Well I'm not sure what to say, that wasn't my intention. I've had one day off in three weeks, 12-14 hours a day....I'm wrecked, the occasional spelling mistake is bound to creep in. I thought my point was valid, misspelt or not.

I can only assume he was an English teacher.

Because you really did upset him because you also got the capital letter rage as well.

I actually expect to lose to Essendon now. I will pleasantly surprised if we knock off them off.

I just hope we can knock off GWS to prevent a 0-3 start to the season, as North in rd 3 is a guaranteed loss.

C'mon man.
Apart from maybe Richmond there is no club that has displayed a greater ability to humiliate its supporters than ours.

Let's all just live in the past, wallow in the depression.

I've had just about enough of footy. Completely over the corrumpt regime that is the AFL, finding the only use for the papers is to line the cats litter tray, can't stand to listen to SEN anymore, but there is just one sliver of interest left. And that is we may finally after decades of decay and false hopes actually look like having a competitive team with real prospects.

All some want is to stay put. To wrap themselves in a shawl of defeat because they either don't dare imagine us successful or all wonderment has been well and truly kicked out of them.

I'll try it this one last time. We have some really decent talent starting to emerge and solidify. Couldn't help notice Viney in the club photo positively beaming and showing hes just itching to get going again.

There's a different Air about the club now.

And despite all this some still channel the pessimism of the bad days. Some still think a bunch of ratbag past their useby date geriatrics and some kindergarten preppies are really going to be a threat !!! Really ?

You don't think Goody and Macca might not want to give a message to the footy world with this game ? That Paul ( we don't test players enough - get rid of drugs) Roos might not want to impress his own thoughts into this game ?

Essendon have been a niggly thorn in our side at times but we've also known victory.

Essendon will be rusty , underdone and overcooked ( all at the same time)

10 goals is the minimum BB.

Without doubt I absolutely want us to smash them and blow them away with a 100+ point win – I hate Essendon more than any other club and would love to see us destroy them – a real possibility given it is Rd 2 and if we break them early in the game then it could go belly up from there. I certainly believe we could do that and have the team to do it.

Unfortunately I still have the horribly sour taste of the frustrating Blues match (10 goals to 2 first half), sickening effort against the Dogs (14 goals to 2 first half, 10 goals to 1 final quarter), the Essendon loss and the St Kilda loss (x2) very fresh in the back of my mind (all games which I attended and sat through). I think the sense of pessimism coming into this game is understandable given these performances all exist within our last 12 games of footy and it will still be the same leaders in our team that need to ensure these run ons don't happen ever again.

As much as I'm excited by the opportunity to win and make a statement it's out of my/our hands and unfortunately thats where the negativity comes from. "Once bitten, twice shy" probably sums it up. For 2016 I'm looking forward to attending each week without the fear of embarrassing losses due to insipid effort and hope our team can compete consistently, bash and crash and make us all proud. Go Dees.

Not really - that is subjective. We could play really well and win by 4 goals. I just want us to get some early wins and gain confidence and momentum. Momentum is one of the more amazing phenomenons in competitive sport. This is a game we should win.

Wins are good enough ? you need 10 goal wins  ?

I don't have any problem with sledging but most of the players will not have been in the program.

it never ceases to amaze me how quickly people forget our last season form. all it takes is a few weeks of mutual online masturbation and suddenly MFC are world beaters.  We were absolutely shite toward the end of last year but it seems the win against an undermanned GWS has people fawning over how good we are going to be. Picking up some scraps in trade week doesn't mean anything. We are a bog ordinary team with some exciting but yet to be fulfilled talent.

Essendon is a danger game as is GWS. Bug, Kennedy and some 18year olds dont prevent Carlton, Stkilda , footscray, Brisbane game performances.

its 2016 ffs...things have changed...for us...and for them

Why anyone would be tipping anything 8 weeks out from a game with no exposed form from round one or any of the NAB challenge series is beyond me.

They are playing for the Drug Lords?

Sledge until they hurt, then sledge some more.

Show no mercy to that club and all who sail on it.

They are a disgrace to the code.

No, but a fit Tyson, Jones, Salem, Vanders & Kent along with more games & footy fitness into Viney, Hogan, Braysaw & co do...

Rebuilding the team is not just about adding new players, it's about the others getting better. With the class & competitive nature of those we have recruited in recent years we would expect to be a much better and harder team this year than in the previous 10...

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
