It could be... but the point that I was trying to make is that I'm glad I saw Carey, Ablett and Dunstall in full flight.  They are matches that I'll tell my kids and grand kids about in the future.  There are plenty of legends of the game who I've seen play live who, for whatever reason, didn't have great matches when they played us.  However when a legend of the game plays a blinder, it sticks with you, and I'm glad I was there to see it.

Reminded me of another game where a Saints forward had a field day against us, but we still thrashed them; round 4 in 1987, and Lockett kicked 12 of St Kilda's 14 goals to lose by 47 points. I could take week after week of opposition players tearing us like that.

That's why I always preferred Dunstall over Lockett as a footballer. Lockett was such a presence that it was a matter of whether Lockett would do enough to get StKilda a win.

Dunstall was a more inclusive player and didn't demand half the ground.

The game you're thinking of was round 6 and we actually won the next three games to go 8/1 after nine rounds. 

After that, we hit the wall and won only three more games (and drew with North) out of 13. We had to wait another 16 seasons before we got another crack at making the finals.

Another cold Friday night, this time sitting in the old Olympic stand, Carey was simple amazing.  Speed, power and breathtaking skills, he was primed and merciless.  It was a depressing evening for an MFC supporter as it looked like the team would merge and we'd be finishing at the tail end of the ladder, but even so, I knew I was watching a pretty special player.

 

 

Did Corey McKernan kick a ridiculous amount of goals from outside 50 that night as well? If he did I was there.

Sorry to post on this thread about mediocre players who have consistently destroyed Melbourne over the years but Dr John Dee shut my original thread down due to some perceived overlap. Perhaps years of watching Melbourne's mediocracy have blurred his vision.

David Hale and Chance Bateman were the original players I suggested as mediocre players who destroyed Melbourne but there are plenty of others. Kent Kingsley always seemed to do well against us as well.

Back to the original topic of Greats of the Game tearing us up and I can't go past Mitchell, Carey, Ablett (snr & jnr).

I  was at that game, and I remember it was a bright, sunny day. (until the 3rd q).  Such hopes for Melbourne. If we won, we would have been back in town. Alas, we were swept away. Used to look forward to reading the Sunday Observer's write-ups in the early part of that season. Players like Denis Clark racking up the stats.
