Is there any danger that we can keep the lid on this for a while?

No chance if he keeps snapping goals from 45m and dishing off like he did to Salem in the last quarter.

No chance, I've not seen a draftee at Melbourne come in and have such an immediate impact like Oliver has had.

Not a hope in hell.

(go team Oliver)

Should have made the first handball a good one then all the rest would not have been required. :D

That's true. But then again he was back off the mark by a step or two and handball sideways, yet it was smothered. Would like to know how that happens.

Then he picked up and drilled a pass what I thought was a good 15m easily. But the ump didn't like that one either. So multiple efforts it was!

Future Brownlow medalist.

Best first games I have seen from an 18 year old.

Sublime hands, can kick a goal, fast & tough will only get better.

Brayshaw was playing pretty good footy up until he got injured. The 2nd quarter against Collingwood on Queens Birthday was something to behold.

if Oliver has a better debut year it is exciting times for Demon fans.

Brayshaw was fantastic (plus he did it at AFL and not NAB Challenge level), but Oliver's impact thus far as a first year player has been better.

Only a select few impressed me this much this early.......Flower, Schwarz,Jakovich,Farmer, and Hogan.

I reckon this kid will be a star.

Given Brayshaw wasn't given NAB challenge games it's hard to draw a line.

Let's hope they are both fighting for the same spot by round 5 because Trengove and Petracca are banging the door down.

Impact is hard to judge. But Brayshaw's tackling, hardness and direct style of footy was instrumental is us scoring against better teams I think. His impact was greater than his stats or talent. He lit us up at Geel, QB'day, North game, Tigers game. Even round 1 he made a big difference.

Clarry has shown me some special abilities but Gus set the bar pretty high.

I'd drop a footy in front of Clarry in a pack situation and he'd do some great things. Playing on him I wouldn't lay a finger on him.

I'd roll a footy out in front of Brayshaw  in space and I expect similar. He's such a natural tackler I wouldn't want to pick up the ball, and if he gets the ball he's so determined to get it on to a team mate in a good spot.

Gerard Healy had a superb debut year for Melbourne as an 18 year old.

Does anyone have the approximate time for 'that handball'? I would like to have another look - without the time to watch the whole 1/4. Thanks.

About 4 mins in, final quarter.

Really..?

Think we all forget how good Trengove debut year was. And as much as I can't stand the little weasel Scully too was pretty impressive. In fact Scully best year in AFL football in terms of disposal was his first year. Their impact on their first year was very impressive especially Trengove.

Could you imagine if we got that Trengove of 2010-2011 back? oh my....

Also make the case for Jack Viney who was BOG In his debut game against the horrible loss against Port

Jesse Hogan was also reasonable in his first full season, comprehensively beating the ALL Australian full back in his fourth game.

i am expecting Petracca to be just as impressive as well when he gets out there!

we're pretty blessed at the minute.

I thought the same - Trengove is the only one that came close in my mind.
But even he had a different sort of impact. It was clear he was comfortably an AFL player, but I'm not sure he had the positive influence on our overall performance that Oliver has had.

The full package.

Hard as nails and oozes class. Will age like Grange Hermitage.

A very rare commodity.

Already a more impressive player than the Toump and hasn't even debuted in the real stuff yet. How a #4 pick midfielder should look.

This^

I agree that although Oliver has impressed a tiny bit better so far we have to take into consideration the team he has around him compared to the team Trengove did which we have the benefit of hindsight with.

I really hope Trengove can pick up from where he was pre injury.

The thing I like is that everyone mentioned the game on the weekend was more at AFL level intensity and he seemed to thrive on that and go up a level.

Plus that 45m snap was something else for a first year player.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
