Riley's been delisted while Michie and Newton are still very much on the fringe at this stage.

I don't disagree, both players are on the fringe, but I think people on here are really down on both of these players simply because they haven't come in and starred. Whilst I admit they haven't had the initial impact I would have hoped, I think Michie has started to settle and play the role the footy department needs him to and Newton will be all the better after another year settling into the club, his role and the gameplan.

Riley couldn't win enough of the ball, nor be the damaging player we needed him to be. Michie and Newton are very much in the frame of being potentially solid contributors.

So one delisting of a depth player that cost us nothing, and two guys that aren't bad at all and played some good footy for us

What about Vince, Tyson and Garlett?

We have had a very good strike rate with recruiting in the Roos era so far

Is it any good? I use gmail.

boom tish!

Thanks I've been Mandee I'm here until I receive a pardon.

They did, reply below.

Dear Ethan,

Thank you for your email, your legal knowledge is clearly second to none. We were unaware Melksham played for Essendon and may possibly be suspended if found guilty at the conclusion of the WADA v EFC trial. We will reassess. Do you think Dangerfield would come to us?

All the best

Roosy.

Lucky you emailed them, dodged THAT bullet!

Michie and Newton were brought in to add depth and play their role when given the opportunity which they have both done so far. Michie was averaging 20 disposals in his last 5 games and Josh Mahoney has been on record to say that he is far too good for VFL. While Newton has showed glimpse what he is capable of in his last game. 11 goals in 11 games is a decent effort first up and i could see him building from here. Could play that half forward role bit like Cripps from West Coast.

Whats funny is you didn't bother to mention Roosy bringing in Vince Garlett Cross and Tyson who have all been successful.

For depth players Newton is an above average ball user and a decent enough ball winner. Michie is an above average ball winner and a decent enough user. But both of them have below average speed and endurance. Both are now 23. It's crunch time this preseason for them and if they have that Daniel Cross desire to give it all they might surprise us next year. If they don't then they'll be decent enough depth.

Newton kicked 11 goals from 11 games, which is pretty good for predominantly a half forward in our team. I'd like to see him play half forward or half back, with the very occasional spell as a midfielder. I actually think that both Newton and Michie are good depth players, and Newton is borderline best 22.

Because they were all proven performers (Tyson would have been if not injured at GWS) at their previous clubs.

If we take Melksham with our 2nd round pick a lot of fans will be disappointed, he would need to perform near to that of Bernie who we got with our 2nd rounder two years ago, I really doubt Melksham can perform to that level though.

It would have to be the 2nd pick in next years draft with a WADA rider.

I wonder if the WADA situation is one of the factors behind a 4-year deal - which becomes, effectively, a 3-year deal.

OK, we're probably one player down next year, but having the likes of McKenzie etc. on our list has left us one player down in any case.

Did it occur to anyone that he may just not be one of the 34 players? Does anybody know for sure? In any event I am sure that the MFC and other Clubs dealing with Essendon players will have pretty creative escape clauses.

Can someone with a little bit of legal knowledge email the club about this, it really concerns me that we would be thinking about recruiting a player, for a second round pick mind you, that has this WADA crap hanging over his head. It just isn't good business management. Would we be looking at recruiting someone that is awaiting his jail sentence? I dont care who the payer is. Unless we know what the penalty will be we should not even contemplate this deal.

Do you seriously think that they haven't thought of this.....delved into the ins and outs, and the maybes?

A contingency must be written in to any contract he is offered, along the lines of WADA no play, no pay, and possibly no stay.

I am looking forward to hearing what is offered and what is written - as much as we will be told.

But it cam sure that would appreciate your input and pointing out these obscure possible problems to them.

How are you sure?

The union has rules against such clauses.

That would be a horrible move if true.

Take with grain of salt, but for discussion purposes:

From BF:

"Confirmed: Essendon 3rd round selection with jake for the Demons second round selection. Will be done in the first hour of trade week."

Mono you are kidding yourself.

Why on earth would any player agree to that clause and as I said earlier the union has rules against such clauses.

If he is one of the 34 then the MFC ( or any club ) takes their chances in recruiting him.

Thats a good deal for us , we bag pick 40 or thereabouts for free. Doubt its true though

Given Essendon's propensity to fail to keep records and other such stuff there must be a real chance there'll be confusion in their paperwork we'll end up with Carlisle instead of Melksham.

If we get Jake for a second round pick and trade Toump to Port for their second round pick, it is essentially Melksham for Toumpas.

I hope that's not true, pick 40 in a really shallow draft doesn't make the fact we are giving up our second round pick for Melksham any better.

Yeah I tend to agree. The consensus is that outside of the top 25, there really isn't much at all. Melksham isn't much of a player, it is a bad deal. It is a bad deal even before taking WADA repercussions into account. I highly doubt that trade gets confirmed early in trade week.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
