Sandringham v Casey Scorpions

Highlights:

For Demon fans who make their way out to TBBO, it will be like turning back the clock to the "good old days" when the MFC affiliate was one of the dominant forces in the VFL. A day of nostalgia but beware ... the place is not the same - for one thing, the old fence has gone. However, it's still as tough as ever to find a car park spot.

The Casey Scorpions secured their place in the finals with a terrific final half fightback against the Coburg Lions last week.

Now that the pressure's off and it's a virtual dead rubber for them, expect the Scorpions to put in a big one.

It looks as if Jordie McKenzie is either being rested or the "mystery injury of the week". Jack Fitzpatrick and Dom Tyson missed out on both MFC and Casey but Jimmy Toumpas is back.

Mitchell Cox (18, 180cm, 78kg) of the Dandenong Stingrays comes in as 23rd player.

... and check out the name of one of the players on the interchange bench for the development league team.

Frosty was the guest speaker in the Premium Members room some 5 weeks ago and said then he planned to be back in time to play finals for Casey.

Wait, what?

But where's Fitz?

correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure he suffered concussion 2 weeks back and due to his history of it they may just be increasingly careful.

'Picket' will be happy that White is named in the starting line up.

Good to see King, Kent & Frost named...

KC - sorry if you have already wrote on this, but are you able to give a run down on all the MFC listed players eligible to play in the VFL finals for Casey?

You've actually seen him at the ground? Or just read his name on the Internet?

KC - sorry if you have already wrote on this, but are you able to give a run down on all the MFC listed players eligible to play in the VFL finals for Casey?

These are the rules which were applicable in 2014 and I'm not aware of any changes:-

20. Participation in Finals

20.1 Players who have not played at least one (AFL or VFL) Senior or AFL Victoria Development Leaguematch in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the Senior Grade Finals.

20.2 Subject to Regulation 20.3 below, players who have played with the AFL Senior team of any AFL Club after the 1st day of July in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the VFL Senior or AFL Victoria Development League Finals unless they have played a total of at least six (6) Senior VFL or AFL Victoria Development League matches in the same season.

20.3 Players who have not played at least two (2) AFL Victoria Development League matches in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the AFL Victoria Development League Finals save where immediately prior to selection, an AFL or VFL listed player has missed through injury, at least ten (10) consecutive home & away matches of the VFL football season and his club remains active in the senior VFL Finals series.

20.4 Players who have played in more thaneight (8) Senior VFL Grade matches shall not be eligible to play in Final Series matches of the AFL Victoria Development League unless they have played in at least six (6) matches of the AFL Victoria Development League.

20.5 Notwithstanding the provisions of this Rule 20, except for Regulation 20.6 below, when a Club has both of its Senior Grade (AFL or VFL) teams engaged on the same weekend, the selection of players in the VFL Senior Grade team shall be unrestricted, provided a player has participated in at least one (AFL or VFL) Senior Grade or AFL Victoria Development League match in that relevant season.

20.6 When an AFL Club is eliminated from the AFL Final Series on the same weekend as the VFL Grand Final, unrestricted selections as per 20.5 for AFL listed players still apply.

20.7 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 20, for a VFL Club(s) who does not field a AFL Victoria Development League team in the competition, AFL listed players must qualify players under Regulation 20.2 and must have played not more than 12 AFL games to be eligible to play in VFL finals matches.

20.8 Notwithstanding any other provision of these Rules, the General Manager of AFL Victoria can deem any person eligible to play in any match.

When I get home tonight if I have time, I'll check my records to see if I can identify which players are eligible. With the turnover of players due to injury, I suspect there might not be as many as we think.

That's the key rule and on that basis, I can see why the omission of James Harmes might be so timely. He's played 7 games for MFC and it could be that the club wants him get a taste of playing finals football - albeit at a lower level than AFL - just to get a feel of what it's like to take part in that area of the game.

Thanks KC! So we are looking at players who have played at least 6 games with Casey or they have been injured for 10 + weeks. Should have around 15 or so players if available.

Quarter Time in the Development League game sees Casey leading 3.0.18 to 1.3.9.

I haven't left to go to the game yet - score is relayed via a contact at the ground.

As far as I can see the below players should be eligible:

Hunt - 6 games

King - 6 games

Spencer - 12 games

Russian - 14 games

Bail - 10 games

Newton - 8 games

Harmes - 10 games

McKenzie - 15 games

Riley - 10 games

Fitzy - 12 games

M.Jones - 9 games

Terlich - 15 games

White 14 games

Mitchie - 8 games

JKH - 6 games

Toumpas - 9 games

O.McDonald - 13 games

ANB - 6 games

Grimes 5 games needs 1 more

Stretch 5 games needs 1 more

Frost and Kent both missed more than 10 consecutive matches but Frost needs to play for the seniors next week to be eligible for VFL seniors

Max gawn has playeed 6 games but if he plays the last two rounds of the AFL he will be ineligible for VFL finals.

May have miss read the finals eligibility rules but I believe we should have a pretty strong team to select. Only negative is the rules of the Casey affliliation which further restricts how many AFL players we can select.

Another problem is that finals start next week which is the last round of the AFL so we still won't have a full strength side. Hoping we win the first final so we can get full sstrength side.

If the finals start next week then Grimes and Stretch are out as they haven't played enough games. That leaves 20 players barring AFL selection and emergencies.

With Spencer and the Russian eligible for the finals, you would think the best course would be to let Max have a break to gear himself for season 2016.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
