POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 10

I suppose Roos was the reason we came back???? Give me a break we don't have enough afl quality players @ both mental & skill required to compete for 120mins ... Another cull will occur by yr end...

Another cull, been hearing about that since 2007.

Agree Dunn, Howe, Watts and M.Jones aren't up to it.

But Jesse White and Travis Varcoe are pretty poor at the Pies too.

A time comes when the coach has to take responsibility.

If the players aren't up to it, why do they play?

Surely Stretch, Michie and ANB would be worth an extended run in the team ahead of those blokes.

Yet, Roos continues to play the former, he should therefore cop some of the blame.

We tired badly in the last quarter. Going wide from half back when we had many loose players down the middle resulted in poor forward line entry and not enough hard leads by forwards. Again missed set shots when it counted in the last quarter. Turnovers hurt us. Some improvemnent in a few areas like clearances and general competitiveness.

I was pretty happy. If you take out the goals from the supposed out-on-the-full free, Fitz's scoop goal and Dunn's bad kick out we were very close. In particular the come back in Q2 will be great for their confidence. We all know what usually happens when we fall behind by a few goals. Great to see that did not happen.

Game plan to beat Melbourne... put a spare man back in defence and apply pressure. Pies outscored us 8 goals to nil with those tactics. Port did it last week. They know how to run and skills to back up ball movement.

Sorry but apart from one terrible turnover, Gawn showed how valuable it is to have a Ruckman who can tap to advantage and compete in the air all over the ground.

In my opinion, his game today was far better than any of Spencer's have been.

They're both poor players. We need to recruit a top line ruckman soon. We also need some fast, skilled big bodied midfielders.

I was a big supporter of Watts, spoke to shifter Sheehan before we drafted him, said he was going to be a gun, unfortunately, I believe he is too soft and will amount to nothing as a Melbourne player, sorry to say so, be we will better off when he is traded. His game today was soft, I've had enough.

His tackle and goal was soft.

Here's a template - feel free to use:

'We got done today, Watts was soft. It was his fault we lost...did you see that effort on (insert name)? Plus, he was shaking hands with his opponents'

I'm going to find umpire no 28 and slaughter his poodle in front of him and then make him eat it.

He sat there 20 m from the play and did nothing while they molested us.

Then he picks one up 60 m from the play.

I want him dead.

Oxley this week, Ebert last week.

Roos is just not a good match day coach. Misses the most obvious tactical moves that every supporter can see. Terrible at the selection table too.

Lol. Let's just give him the axe then.

If you can't see drastic improvement, then I'll call you Helen Keller.

On a side note, I [censored] hate Collingwood and losing to them today was infuriating. The loud, ignorant supporter posted behind me every single time doesn't help either.

I know I am bashing Roos a lot in this thread.

I just want to clarify, that he is a good coach and has greatly improved us, through list management and development.

However, when he has a shocker he should be called out on it like anyone else.

Roos had a stinker.

Sorry for going on about it but I needed it off my chest.

Have a good night guys.

Hoping next week improves!

Lost in the coaches box.

Got a red hot Garlett waiting for anything to hit the ground, yet we leave Oxley on his own to mark everything.

He should've been manned up, or lined up and smashed.

Apart from that I was happy enough with the overall effort.

I could see him standing on his own between several Dees players from where I was on level 2. It was bleeding obvious. Why did nobody go to him and stop him marking it time and again?

Surely Stretch, Michie and ANB would be worth an extended run in the team ahead of those blokes.

Yet, Roos continues to play the former, he should therefore cop some of the blame.

Stretch clearly wasn't ready for AFL when he was in the side, ANB hasn't been ready since the start of the year and no one's debated that at all (he is nearing readiness now though, we may see him in the coming weeks), and Michie is a good VFL player who hasn't been able to demonstrate two-way running at AFL level once in his career.

Meanwhile Howe and Watts had vastly improved games today (agree with you that Dunn and M Jones had poor games).

There are things to criticise Roos about (we didn't handle the loose man back well, which is common for 2015), and then there are personal peeves which aren't warranted.

Outcoached and out conditioned.

Roos should always man up the loose guy in defence as it always gives opposition solid rebound.

No idea why we can't even run out quarters when we have had Misson for years now. Opponents are always conditioned much better.

Players did everything they could

Don't want to give him excuses however our player turnover has been significant

By the way- Watts was in our best.

Hogan was beaten.

Dunn needs a break.

Matt Jones is still Matf Jones.

There is no point to a tiny handball in congestion

Roosy needs to explain why the short handball,

Why let the loose man in defence go?

We are close to being a reasonable team.

End of quarter [censored] ups, kick ins still atrocious.

I was pretty happy. If you take out the goals from the supposed out-on-the-full free, Fitz's scoop goal and Dunn's bad kick out we were very close. also cloke kicked all the goals that he usually misses!

Thought we lost a bit when Vandenberg went off, and loose man Oxley probably won the game for them in the end.

Saw the future of our midfield there with Brayshaw and Viney having great games, bring on Petracca.

That's the point.

We gave them one spare back, we had one spare back.

The game became a defensive rebound game, with the extra.

The issue for us being we cannot retain nor move the ball with an extra they can.

One on one we were dominating because the game didn't rely on skill.

Poor coaching.

OK so we are just going to ignore the skill errors that cost us goals

One bloke had influence for a half and that's what cost us the game

I think u need to look at all of the aspects of the game like giving away a 7 goal 1st qtr or Dunn's goals and frees he gave away that allowed the pies to pull clear

Isolating one move sounds very silly

I should add, Fitzpatrick's mistake was embarrassing, but it happened because Gawn tried to mark the ball on the line instead of punching it through.

How many goals have we given up on the goal line this year, mainly because our ruckmen aren't trained to kill the contest? Fitzpatrick never should have had to have his panic moment.

Effort and intent were great. Our decision making and execution out of the back 50 was awful. There was nothing wrong with leaving Oxley free until it was obvious we were going to continually kick it to him. After the third one it was poor coaching by Roos and co not to do something about. How good was it to see an attacking ruckman at the centre bounce who had more than one trick in his bag. The spots yours to lose Max. Not happy to lose but give me that level of effort each week and I will accept losing to better quality sides and beating those around us.

In a day where our midfield had a great game, the forwards and backs were beaten.

Oxley and Cloke were the difference, and Fitzpatrick and Dunns gift goals cost us any chance of winning.

I really thought we were the better team on the day. Our best was very exciting. The 2nd quarter was some of the best footy I've seen this club play in a very long time. Just gave away too many cheap goals. And we had no one strong enough for Cloke as usual.

25 points not huge , midfield higher level, dumbness a higher leveltoo unfortunately, but amongst other things ( and I realise its a bit silly picking out one thing) I suspect the Gawn /Fitzy thing will get a fair hearing at review.

Just highlights how you can crucially hurt yourself with an action that should have been dealt with more effectively. Do it 3 or 4 times in a math and you pretty much have your 25 points. In addition the normally inconsistent Cloke shot the lights out. Not much in it really but we have to play smarter.

A much better effort from the team, they contested and made it a good contest until the last quarter. Good over all performance sprinkled with dumb mistakes. I have to disagree with the Roos bashing, he kept a man back on collingwoods forward line because cloke was so dangerous and to give us a lot of interceptions and provide assistance to our back men. The turnovers are what did us in, some were from the backline some we from their goal square.

Happy with the effort and just shows that we can mix with the better teams, not that I think Collingwood is a top 4 team. but they are better than us at the moment.

I think an area that we really need to work on is moving the ball quickly too many times our players mark it and hold it not prepared to kick forward quickly or take the first option while it is available. when we moved it quickly we took them by surprise and spare man or not.

Fitpatrick is so far from the source of our loss but stupid people love a whipping boy don't they.

Kept J White out of the game for about 80% and was OK pinch hitting in the ruck.

Relative to his higher ranked tall defenders, he was, on balance, OK.

TMac had a shocker and Dunn has recently been deplorable.

Nah, stuff it. Let's start over.

Morons.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
