the silver lining if there is any is that we will get significant compensation for him if that does eventuate, will it be the same as keeping him? no. but two top 10 picks and a player potentially does help soften the blow a little bit.

Well I don't think you're insane, so I accept your "preference" is for him to stay.  However, you said, "Stay or go i am fairly comfortable with where we sit."  That's a theme I've read from others as well.  And for the life of me I don't understand it.

I'm certainly feeling more confident he will stay, at least for the short term (3-5 year). It gives us time to prove we are a finals threat, or freo time to prove they are rebuilding properly.

Many have commented that besides the StKilda game Hogan has had a slow start to the season.

Besides the StKilda where he tore them apart I think he has been solid - he has taken the most marks for our club and he draws two defenders when he is deep every week.

Whilst it is too early to go with a superstar tag or a once in a generation footballer for Hogan, early evidence is that we have something very very special and I am thoroughly uncomfortable with the thought that our number one  forward for possibly the next 10 years may end up somewhere else.

I'm not fussed with Jesse's form this year, early on it wasn't great but he's now working hard and he got personal reward for effort against St Kilda. He's certainly playing further up the ground and working with Watts as link men at appropriate times. More goals will come and now that he's kicked a bag against the Saints I feel more are around the corner. 

Ultimately we're winning and that's the most important thing for both the club and Jesse.

Disagree. The most talented kp player i have seen enter the league since riewold and pavlich and comparable in talent to the ox and carey. Genuine  superstar and most def a generational  player

I don't think a Ba-Zillion Dollar deal until the turn of the century is out of the question

You can make an early call  - I prefer to keep my powder dry - today and now he is not a superstar and he is not a generational player. However at the end of the day I firmly suspect that in a couple of years I am going to be saying exactly the same thing as you are saying now. 

So for this reason alone, heaven and earth must be moved to keep him. 

I'm glad we have the likes of PJ and Mahoney to handle the negotiations. They are true professionals and will get it over the line unless Hogan is totally committed to returning to WA.

Fair enough.

I would add to my previous comment that in the time i have followed the dees the only player who i have heaped such praise on or made such a big call is Schwarz. No other player has come close, including Neitz who was AA in his second or 3rd year (i was only 6 when Robbie began his career and hence a bit young for such predictions).

With Watts, Harmes and now Petracca delivering on platter balls to Hogan's advantage, he'd be crazy to move on.

When it all clicks, it will be glorious...

Agreed - I don't think it's hyperbole to say he could be the best forward we've had in the clubs history. Neitz and Schwarz were both good not great (Schwarz due to injury), Farmer and Jakovich were mercurial but inconsistent, we've never really had a true "spearhead" or champion CHF since the days of Fanning and Smith.

If he left it would be a disaster.

This. There are two big assumptions being commonly made. That Freo are his only potential suitors in the West in the event of homesickness and that he'll be signing a mega-long contract now. There are fair reasons for these assumptions but certainly arguments why neither are definite.

Exactly. The compensation MAY net you an A grader if you're lucky, but it's highly improbable that you'll land a potentially elite KPF like Hogan.

Hutchy on Footy Classifieds got laughed at by Judd, Lloyd and Wilson when he suggested that Richmond should trade Delideo for a 1st round pick. That 1st round pick would probably come from a contending team, so you're looking at pick 12-18 for an A grader. Madness.

I'm becoming very concerned by the growing chorus of football industry people saying that Hoges is certain to return home to WA.

Langdon and Hardie, I know, are Western Australians and might be being parochial, but on the other hand they are based in WA and maybe they do have some inside info. 

Crackers Keenan recently wrote that not only is he certain to go home, it is likely to be at the end of this year (despite his contract).

It might be correct that the opinions/whispers of these characters should be dismissed, but obviously, the more you hear it the more you worry.

A few random points that I think are pertinent:

• Hogan's worth to the team cannot be simply measured by goals scored.  He has played more time up the ground this year (even starting in the centre square on a few occasions), and he has been important in these stints with his defensive marking, tackling and creativity.  Part of the Roos / Goodwin "all players need to be flexible" philosophy, I suspect, and it also frees him up a bit from the double teaming that he cops constantly as a KPF;
• if he decided to leave it would more than likely put a significant 'brake' on achieving our membership aspirations (another important reason for getting his signature);
• if team success is an important consideration for him (as seems to be the case), then we need to maintain at least good solid form throughout this year.  We wouldn't want 3 or 4 game losing streaks;
• the continued development and promise of Weideman and/or Hulett is important.  Hogan will relish the day when there is another strong KPF to take some of the opposition attention away from him;
• his bond / friendship with team-mates seems to be important to him.  In this context I was happy to read in the Harmes' RS interview that Hogan, N.Jones and Harmes had been surfing together before the GC game.

I don't know how Hardie would know anything while he's spending his hours at the Rifle Club Hotel in W'town punting.

By requesting a trade. Whether Melbourne grant the request whilst he is under contract is of course another matter.

But the trading of contracted and highly valued players prior to the expiry of their deals has been done on several occasions - partly to maximise the return.
