Grimes was a clear front-runner, and I've made my view on Trengove's suitability in an earlier post.

It's exactly the same reason as why Murphy would've been made captain of Carlton.

I would loved for Trengove to be captain, stay injury free and have a player like Junior there to provide support. We didn't have enough older leaders to support Jack, that doesn't mean that the decision was wrong.

The way Carlton do things, I'm expecting they'll start their rebuild by offering us their first round draft pick for Dean Terlich, after initially asking us for Jordan Gysberts.

Dare I say it...should we get our act together somewhat this season with 6-8 wins and with our Coacing panel I'd say we look a markedly better destination for kids wanting back into Vic than the Bluebaggers. They're going nowhere fast imho.....and with Mouse at the Helm...fmd...it's a mad house lol.

Name the players that we had on our list that were over 25 that, from the outside, looked capable of leading us. Not forgetting that they year before Trengove and Grimes were appointed, that it was the year down at Cat Park...

They were well recognised at the time as being the best of a bad bunch. I'm sure as hell glad that we didn't give it to the "senior" players in Moloney, Rivers, Jamar, etc. Green needed to step down as captain for his role in that day too.

Ironically, looking back at some of the old threads on here, there was one (thread) calling for Frawley to be named captain, and many, many posters adamant that Jones shouldn't be captain, with one person saying "ever"!!! I also noticed an old post of mine that thought Trengove was a year too early, but he had obviously shown enough to the playing group and coaching staff to indicate that he was ready. I also think the Grimes selection was a given, providing the medico's were happy with his body.

First thing first. Murphy is 27, not 29.

Second, he has been, pretty consistently, a very, very good footballer. Even in this season, when he has appeared to be struggling at times, he's still clocking numbers and meaningful impact that would be in the top niche of our midfield.

So, setting aside the Murphy bagging (well, at least it is a change from the ever-odious Gibbs bagging, which I guess has to take a rest now he is leading the AFL for tackles) I think the posters saying that Carlton will put an unrealistic price on him are right on the money, so to speak. He wont be worth what we'd have to give up to get him.

I'm extremely way of paying high trade price or premium salaries to attract players - the last thing I want for Melbourne is to end up like Carlton, with a top-loaded playing list that simply can't get to a best 22 on the day, despite several years of alleged building.

Boy is Malthouse getting what he deserved, after politicking his way into the coach's job at Carlton by claiming they were under-performing and had a top-4 quality list.

I mean Nathan Jones absolutely destroyed him when we played them last year, kept him quiet and notched up another really strong performance at the same time if not best on ground, averaged 28 touches per game last year, i'd say he's a better player than Murphy.

Nate Jones is currently better than Marc Muphy. Dom Tyson has a huge chance to be better than the both of them.

First thing first. Murphy is 27, not 29.

But we can't recruit him until October and by Round 1 next year he'll be three months shy of 29.

For me that's too old to be parting with a an early first round pick, which is what Carlton will demand.

Cant agree WYL, whilst the captaincy decision obviously wasn't a good one it can't be seen as the sole reason for destroying their careers. But no being able to use the footy can do it.

They had the opportunity last year to trade for early picks or even get involved in the Boyd deal but had their heads so far up their....

I hope they do try and trade out some of their better players, it will be a huge mistake now, probably bigger than the ones we made.

It was great to hear Mark LoGiudice bagging out the previous administration the other day, and then Greg Swann defending his era by bagging out the one which preceded his. That's a familiar story.

Hard to believe this is the same club that went within a kick of a Prelim just a few years ago.

As a Melbourne fan in his mid 40s with more than a few Carlton supporting friends the Blues descent into mediocrity has been quite enjoyable. If I ever bump into S Kernahan I'd surely buy him a beer to thank him for his 20 years of mediocre service on the Carlton Board.. Reminded one recently that when we met in year 7 in 1983 it was 19 years since the Dees last flag and but a year since the Blues had finished snaffling 3 out of the last 4 flags..and now its 20 years since the Blues last flag.

Murphy might have been an All Australian is 2011 but he is a B Grader at best n 2015. Contracted to the Blues until the end of 2018 on big dollars and turns 28 in July. Small, courageous on occasion but not particularly physical and not particularly damaging with his disposal. I'd take N Jones, Tyson, Viney, Braysahw & vandeBerg ahead of him in a heartbeat.

By way of an update for members we have:

- Secured an experienced GM of List Management and Strategy – Stephen Silvagni.
- Commenced the build of a list management database (the platform for which comes from the Boston Redsox) and an accompanying 'analytics program'. This program will allow us to store better information, benchmark and value players (our own and others), link it all to vision, and generally help us to make better and more informed decisions.
- Established a physical 'hub' within the Club that is to be a centre of list management excellence. Within that, Stephen will lead and work with the recruiting team, our opposition scout (Barry Prendergast) and our coaches. Their focus is on building sustainability for the future and building a premiership-winning list.
- Bolstered our relationship with the Northern Blues whereby they will play some curtain raisers to our AFL games. We are integrating Plans and Values, and we will have a CFC Director (Greg Lee) on the Northern Blues Board.

I want to emphasise to all members just how important all of this work has become.

It's critical work simply because we don't have enough depth or depth of experience. We have some bright young prospects, but we need more. We've often heard the call (from members) for 'no quick fixes', and we are very much aligned with that in our (List) Plans. We need to build for the future , and have an element of patience along the way. We have to draft superbly, access free agents/trades to supplement our growth, and develop (and coach) as effectively as we can over the coming years.

I believe we communicated that over the off-season. But after just a couple of rounds, let's be very clear about it...

- We have a significant list 're-build' in front of us.
- That re-build is going to take time.
- All of the many changes we've made over the off-season and our greater investment into list management is aimed at just that – building our list – and building success. No quick fixes, no white knights.

But it wasn't the right decision.
