The Rising Star Thread - Congratulations Jesse Hogan!

Featured Replies

All the KPP like brown, Brereton, Dunstall, Carey all say it should be Hogan, but if you look in the HS toady it was 9/8 Cripps way.

Probably count Richo as a def Hogan camp, pretty sure he has said he deserves it or something similar.

If hogan can't win it then no key forward will ever win it

If hogan can't win it then no key forward will ever win it

Cripps numbers are also bloody good, better than Judds. If it was any other year Hogan or Cripps would win it by a mile. This year they are competing against each other.

Has to be Hogan.

When was the last time there was a KPF who played like him at age 20?

Cripps is very good, but Hogan is a rare talent.

Jeremy Cameron was pretty good at 20 IIRC

Jesse will win it

Cripps is a dime a dozen mid

Hogan is amazing, but it's plain bias to say that Cripps is a dime a dozen.

His numbers are better than Judd & Ablett in their respective seasons. We would be singing his praises if he played for us.

The only reason why I think Hogan should win is because of the difficulty of his role.

Being a young KPF in a poor team is much much harder than being a young midfielder in a struggling team. Carlton are terrible, but they still have Murphy and Simpson who would get harder tags each week. Hogan has played on all the premium defenders in the competition, and has managed to kick a goal on every one of them, save for the Carlton game.

Regardless of who wins, both will go on to be excellent A grade players.

If Cripps wins then Jesse will be very angry.

Could be good for next year. Chip on his shoulder type thing. Not that he really needs it.

Hope for Hogan RS.

Jesse will win it

Cripps is a dime a dozen mid

Cripps is quite clearly better than "dime a dozen" and would be a very worthy winner.

If Hogan doesn't win it then you'd have to ask when if ever a KPF will win the award, but Cripps has still had an outstanding year and will go on to become an elite midfielder for Carlton to build around.

As Darcy and Richo said If Hogan doesn't win it a key position fwd will never win it again

Cripps numbers are also bloody good, better than Judds.

What's that got to do with anything ?

Judd was played more as a forward in his first 20 games, not as an inside mid like Cripps.

That said, Cripps is deserving and if he wins so be it.

I think Cripps will win it unfortunately. He has been fantastic this year and the games and numbers that he's producing are huge.

With that said, I think Hogan is and will continue to be the better of the two into the future and, if I was starting a team tomorrow, Hogan would be first picked.

Jeremy Cameron was pretty good at 20 IIRC

Very true.

I honestly rate Hogan as better though.

only one mid in that group

don't see what qualifications mclachlan evans have. hopefully they only vote if the others are split

They have a watching brief 'daisy', they obviously don't trust the panel.

Tell me whats harder.. Being the key position forward player in a struggling side in your first year and kicking goals against the number 1 defender that goes to you and usually gets double teamed and with limited inside fifty entries? Or being a midfielder who you hardly have someone tagging you and always being around the ball at stoppages / play?

Given the circumstances and the stats below, I know who the winner is.

Hogan now the bookies favourite (in suspended betting). $1.60 to $2.20 for Cripps.

It was a dead heat last night, so the bookies know something we don't!

Clearly the 'key forward will never win it if Hogan doesn't win it' argument doesn't make sense. It depends on who else is in the field. Next year, a key forward who isn't as good as Hogan might win because he's the best for that year.

This might seem a technicality but I'm pretty red hot on the stupidity of the football media!

This should put what Hogan has done in perspective:

2015: Hogan: 20 games- 44 goals 19 behinds

Other forwards in their 2nd season:

Wayne Carey: 21 games- 38 goals 23 behinds

Jonathan Brown: 25 games- 38 goals 22 behinds

Nick Riewoldt: 22 games- 21 goals 18 behinds

Lance Franklin: 14 games- 31 goals 9 behinds

Travis Cloke: 15 games - 6 goals 12 behinds

The best I have found in recent times is Jeremy Cameron with 62 goals 27 behinds in his 2nd season! Though they are very different players with Hogan a much better contested mark than Cameron.

Quite true 'Ricky'.

Daniel Talia won it in 2012 as a full-back!

So, yeah a key forward will win it at some stage!

Nonetheless, would love Jesse win it!

For him, the team and for supporters.

Something more to cheer about!

Quick question. If Hogan wins the Rising Star, will this be the first silverwear (meaning any award/prize/flag/trophy) won by Melbourne for anything since Jared Rivers won the Rising Star back before the Dark Ages?

(Excluding meaningless match day trophies and the meaningful women's competition).

Jack Darling kicked 53 in his second year at the same average as Hogan - 2.2 goals per game.

But Hogan beats him in every other stat, i.e. possessions, marks, contested marks, marks inside 50, goal assists and ratings points.

Ok, I forgot about him. I'd be interested to see the amount of inside 50's the Eagles got that year compared to Melbourne this year. Plus he had Kennedy to take the number one defender. I think that's what makes Hogan so special, he has taken the number one defender all season and beat a lot of them.

Injuries aside, Hogan should easily be able to kick 53+ next season, especially if our midfield stops with the terrible disposal!

Put a sneaky $20 on hogan when it was at 2.90. Feeling pretty confident.

Although I must say Cripps' last game with 14 clearances is ridiculous.

Good point about the inside 50's, but Kennedy only played 9 games that year due to injuries and Darling regularly to the opposition's best.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
