I like Nathan Buckley a lot. Never shirks any issue and doesn't dish out cliches. He has every right to be devastated and to show it and have difficulty accounting for what has happened.

How important is the first game of season to back up Melbourne's story?

"first round we always build up, end of the year you often don't remember the first game. The art of coaching is trying to get a brand of footy that people want to watch every week, win, lose or draw, and that's what we are trying to do."

Is Gaz playing?

"i would think, he is the sort of player who can just sit in the goal square."

'end of the year you often don't remember the first game'

Unfortunately, we (MFC supporters) do because we repeat the same thing each year!

I hope Jnr Ablett plays...he has to be rusty

No point hiding from the elite players...

learn to match them then beat them

Unfortunately, we (MFC supporters) do because we repeat the same thing each year!

I tells ya i would remember a win!

Yeah, he's a great coach and all... I'm glad we have him.... but his waffling on 360 is politician-like. He provides very little insight with his answers, just tarting up the plain-obvious with verbose vocabulary.

Almost every social media comment about him has the same criticism. He talks a lot, but he says absolutely nothing.

Am not sure there is much more he can say about the something over an over again, wait for some games and then there will be more to talk about, he will be more willing to say more if we win, if we lose then what can he say, the same things.

Well i must be the only one who doesnt mind Roosy on 360..

I've always said he would make a great politician.

At least now that he was Melbourne coach he doesn't just talk about Sydney (and Joey Kennedy) but he still manages to mention them whenever he can.

I also am very happy to have him as coach but I agree that his discussion on 360 is not really worth listening to. He speaks in very general terms about most topics, what people listening want is some insight into the club or at least feel as though they are getting some.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
