Bad - it will take at least another trade/draft period to make us a good team as we still carry a lot of dead wood

Ugly - foot skills and decision making is still horrendous and possibly worse than VFL standard

HH we keep trading and turning over the list year in year out but we seem to be forever stuck with a dysfunctional playing group. I listened to about 30 minutes of the game tonight and it just all sounded pitiful, poor decisions, fumbling, dropped marks, mis kicks. This was our rehearsal for round 1 with players competing for selection. I just don't know where to from here?

Jack Grimes had 100% DE tonight by the way if anyones interested. The only problem I have with Jack at the moment is his strength or lack of at the contest, he can get pushed off too easily.

I take it you don't count kick ins as part of his disposal efficiency!

Jack Grimes may have had 100% DE, but the number of times he handballs to team mates under the hammer is ridiculous. It's as though the footy is a hot potato and he thinks he has 0.0001 seconds to get rid of it...

Our midfield isn't dangerous enough to kick through the sticks consistently. It puts too much pressure on our forwards and makes the play to shut us down obvious for the opposing coaches, especially cos we have so many spuds who somehow get the ball 55-65m out from our goals and look like a zombie gazelle stuck in headlights.

Picket, you look for any excuse to kick jimmy when he's down, I reckon it's about time to just get over it! Like it or not demon land has heard your opinions 1000 times and it doesn't change the fact jimmy is a melbourne player and mr wines is not.

The good. Lumumba, Garlett, Vandenberg, jamar.

The Bad. The forward set up. Why do they crowd the one area instead of spreading to offer targets that aren't 4 on 4.

The Ugly. The disposal caused by over crowded congestion. The stoppages won by Essendon.

MFC need to place a crumber behind the pack attempting to mark the incoming high ball in forward contests. The lack of this has cost us hundreds of goals over the past eight years.

Really agree with this, and your earlier post that Jones, Jetta and H take the time - and seem to have the awareness and space - to assess the situation, and more often than not find a way through to dispose it of themselves.

Still too many hot-potato handballs from too many others that result in turnovers or htb decisions by putting team-mates under immediate pressure.

That was frustrating. Wayne Carey or Jonathan Brown would have backed themselves both times and had a shot.

Like a young player, who hasn't played ONE game yet, he's been coached to look for options. His kicking action looks awkward, but I reckon he's quite an accurate, penetrating kick.

Most of his work was in tight and not that bad.

One thing that makes me cringe though is team mates giving him the ball when he is not on his favoured left, this happens a bit too much.

Hogan to me isn't quite ready for AFL.

He spent the year not getting any footy into him. I would think a month at Casey get some easy goals would do him good. He looked overawed and underdone in a game that was at 40% the intensity of an actual match.

Wouldn't be surprised if he isn't in the team for round 1.
