The one issue I still have with Max Gawn, is he still doesn't use his physical attributes well enough, he got thrown off the ball by Dunny previously who was giving away serious height and weight, this shouldn't happen, McCartney told him so and Col Garland did the same on Tuesday

Agreed saty, really hope he develops that inner monster within somehow or learns to use his height/weight better.

TDI can you confirm what I saw in one drill? The Spencil lead out from the goal square and took a very impressive, soft hands mark, out in front of his body. Then went back and slotted the goal. Hold on that looked totally coordinated!

.No your eyes did not deceive you, he has been training and looking a lot better than other posters give him credit for

Again, posters including myself will give him 'credit' when he performs and contributes in an AFL match.

The fact that we are highlighting a 2-meter tall giant taking a mark out and in front of his body and then kicking a goal is far more concerning than encouraging in my eyes.

Sometimes I get really disillusioned by the expectations of some of our supporters.

Yep. He seems to crouch down to get in a more powerful position, but then he seems to lose his height advantage. Maybe he needs more weight in the lower body, but I'm sure they don't want to overload him. His mobility is one of his strengths around the ground when he can play like another midfielder and means he can provide options on the lead and also defend better than most 208cm types when forward. But it counts for nothing if he doesn't pluck a few or at least bring them to ground for the crumbers.

So far I love the role McCartney is doing just telling it how it is. Gawn's had troubles using his height in marking contests for years and I'm sure previous coaches have attempted to teach him, but there's nothing better than straight up real time correction.

Spot on - compare this to Sandilands who stands straight and even though he hardly jumps he raises his hand(s) straight up or out and taps/marks the ball at its highest point making it near impossible to stop.

Gawn is hunched and therefore the advantage of height is diminished.

Glass half empty again, it is not highlighting, it is merely pointing out that he is capable of doing this and has been doing it at training, I have reported this but been howled down by posters who think a lot of our players are just [censored], can't think who they are at the moment

You always manage to put into writing what I am thinking, just sums it up perfectly, re his weight and strength, he is 112k, they don't want him any bigger

Agree, but how much of that is confidence and belief in his own ability? once he gets some consistant game time and knows he can trust his body i expect to see him start to build confidence that he belongs at the level and throw his weight around a little bit more, i think it's a natural progression.

JKH is my smokey to have a really big breakout year, he is learning everything he can of Jeff Garlett (the good stuff), yes there is space for both, or one on the bench, imagine having Garlett and you get tired and he is replaced by JKH, a small defenders nightmare

I think he is one player who could be a genuine A grader.

I don't think he will be a genuine A grader but if he can get to the level of someone like Stokes I will be happy. I don't think he has that extra ingredient to be right at the top of the heap, Tyson for example will be...he has class for sure but the extra for him is time and space.

People stating that we have depth are kidding themselves. We seriously lack quality mids. Which is why I think that JKH will be groomed as a mid rather than a small forward.

Contrary to what Roos may have said about him on arrival, Garlett will play as a permanent small forward.

I think he will push up into the midfield at times.

Because of his quick hands, expect him to be involved in a bit of the stoppage work in the forward half, maybe popping up on a wing as well

Forgive me for being off topic, but this phrase continues to grate with me. Surely he 'marks the ball when he is at his highest point' is what you and commentators mean when they say this. The ball's highest point is usually very much higher. Of am I missing something?

You can tell it's been a long off season when just a spelling mistake almost derails a thread!

It might not be about JKH's top speed, maybe's he's just quicker off the mark. It was more than once though where he seemed to have time and space through the corridor.
