Wowee the ecpectations on Hesse Hogan are immense! Sure he is an impressive kid with some impressive attributes but he hasn't played an AFL game and hasn't played at any level for more than a year. If he exceeds Frawley's overall 2014 output that would be a good result... Maybe 20ish goals for the season. Dawes, Garlett and Watts should also all be around that mark.

I suspect Hogan should be a big improver into 2016 with some game time under his belt.

Think about the expectations on Boyd who has only played 8 games!

I think Hogan will score more goals than Boyd next season.

If the goal tally doesn't change much IDAD. Then we won't win too many games.

Especially against the teams that matter.

We can maybe win games kicking 10 goals agains the bottom 6 clubs but if you have aspirations for finals then you need to have your fair share of Century scores.

If as expected Petracca plays the season mostly as a forward with occasional rotations through the midfield, a goal tally of 20+ isn't unreasonable.

Menzel and Stringer both did it as non-KPF this year, and Bontempelli managed a goal a game as well.

Jeremy Howe managed 18 goals from 13 games in his first season.

Of course, for a really good rising star age goal tally you have to go back a few years, to a certain Jeff Garlett in 2010, with 40 goals.

And in the history of the game how many have done that?

Only once in the 22-game era (as in, going back to the early 1970s) has a team kicked fewer goals in a season than Melbourne did in 2014.

And that was GWS in their ridiculous debut year.

So, personally, I'd be really hoping for some improvement on that.

My guess is we'll kick more goals, but no-one will kick a ton.

I think you might find it is called learning the game.

So how many years do we give them? Tackling...a fundamental basic of the game yet many of our players struggle to lay a tackle and when they do its not effective. Kicking for goal is another one, how many hours are spent by forwards practicing what they're paid to do. Obviously first and second year players need time to adjust to the pace of the game but there has to be a cut off. Another classic is "they're learning the new game plan" how many are there seriously? When Hinkley went to Port they shot up the ladder in a year putting that theory to bed. If kids play TAC, in most cases they get a new coach every year, hence a slight deviation from last years game plan. On top of that they have club/school footy. I think some clubs/coaches tend to overthink it hence over complicate it. This club has run out of excuses.

Thanks for that I knew it wasn't going to be many. As I said in a previous post I don't expect Hogan to kick 1 goal a qtr next year but it can't hurt to set yourself targets. Between ages 23-28 I will be expecting that from him.

The first two are excellent. We all would have been thrilled at the start of the season to be at that number by this point.

The rest look a bit disappointing to me.....

Hogan and Garlett both have the potential to kick 40 goals for the season. If you said both would get that at the beginning of the year everyone would have taken it. It's a big positive.

Obviously the rest isn't great and we still struggle sometimes to find goals from other parts of the ground, but if we can improve on this in 2016 then we'll improve further on this year.

Kent would have snagged a few for sure. damn shame.

I want to preface this comment by saying I'm not a Dawes apologist at all. For someone on his coin he needs to do more and do it more often.

However - how often do you see Dawes playing in a position where he can kick goals? With Hogan in the side he generally plays closer to goal while Dawes generally plays further up field. I know that doesn't excuse the poor return but more often than not Roos seems to use Dawes as the link up man with Hogan out of the square. I might be going blind but I see Hogan being hit up on a lead inside 50 on a far more regular basis than Dawes.

I don't want this to seem an excuse for Dawes as 6 goals for a key forward is not good, but he isn't given the same opportunity to kick them he once was and with him giving Gawn a chop out in the ruck he is spending less and less time in a position to hit the scoreboard.
