WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN NEWTON

Featured Replies

Any actual news on Ben Newton ?

Wow. Another supporter that thinks because the club gave these players contracts it must be the right decision.

THE CLUB HAS WON 40 GAMES IN 8 YEARS - NOT MANY PLAYERS ARE ANY GOOD!

I would much rather Brendan McCartney, the best Development Coach in the AFL, be given two raw 18 year old midfielders with picks 40 and 53 than hold onto players like McKenzie and Evans who have had years in the system and still can't get a kick at Casey.

Oh, and if you don't want an 18 year old then take Greg Broughton with 53. A better half back than Grimes and Terlich who, with Lamumba, might actually help us get the ball out of the backline. Has been squeezed out of Gold Coast because of the plethora of silky half backs they have. But again you probably think Grimes is a beauty too.

Are you dumb? Did you even comprehend my post there? Hahahahaha

Where did I say having Evans & McKenzie already signed for 2015 before 2014 ever commenced was a good idea? Where?!? I was saying they can't be included in the conversation because they had multi year deals before Roos arrived!!

And my point still stands, Roos & our list managers made the decision months ago that blokes like Barry, Terlich, Riley & whoever else they resigned this year would be more valuable on our list than more late picks being on our list this year. That to me indicates what OUR people think about this years draft crop.

Where did I say it was the right decision bloke? Go on!!

You sure you really understood what your mate was passing on as info on this years draft? You have comprehension issues clearly. I said TAKE McKenzie & Evans out of the picture as they were already contracted. I didn't state that I backed that decision & if the MFC wish to pay them out to put another kid on the list I'm happy for them to, just for the record, I don't rate either of them myself & personally cannot fathom why either got more than a 1 year extension at the time!

I like the look of Newton btw, but haven't seen much & don't know much about him, but still looks a better prospect then most of this years draft in my limited opinion though. Seems the club feels the same way as I do, rightly or wrongly.

FMD this club is a joke. The list of players resigned this year (by Roos & co) includes Bail, Terlich, Riley, Spencer, Barry, and M.Jones, and yet we don't currently have room on our list to both use pick 40 and take a RFA.

In addition, we have McKenzie, Jamar, Evans and others still stinking up the joint after years of mediocrity. And, we've had three players (to date) taken by top clubs.

After 10 wins in three years, how you could possibly not have more than enough room on the list to take any player you wanted is mind boggling.

Whos idea was it to give Mckenzie a 3 year deal...

Agree ! Just another example of list incompetence! 3 years for a "Park Footballer", FMD!

Settle down, the 2nd list lodgement hasn't even taken place yet.

I agree but it will take more than 1 year to turn around the ship.

Imagine we get rid of these players and we get 4-5 serious injuries throughout the year. We would then call upon players from Casey who are even worse. These players are depth players, too cover and fill holes.

We need to slowly de-list the players which aren't needed, otherwise it could go pear shaped.

Is it my imagination, that whenever we are chasing someone, it doesn't happen quickly. Other clubs seem to get targetted players far more quickly.

For example we got Frost with minutes to spare in the trading period, also Lumumba took until the second last day and now 5 DFA's have been signed and the one we want is still unsigned.

They don't want to join us?

Frost and Lumumba clearly did.

Just offering a thought Redleg.

I was not in town so excuse me if I am wrong but both those two seemed to take some time to get over the line.

Convincing them to take smaller contracts so we can recruit Danger, Sloane and Tex all at once next year.

That's how it works in my wildest dreams, anyway.

The Lumumba deal was hanging on the beams deal to Brisbane as well as Varcoe to Collingwood. Lumumba and Clark were good to go right at the start.

I think we just hoped for Frost to come to us in the PSD for free but got spooked last minute by StKilda and their plans to get both Membrey and Frost.

Garlett deal seemed to happen pretty quick.

I would assume we still have some room to spare in our salary cap, if we paid these players out would that be with this years salary cap allowance, which we have to use to a certain level, or next years salary cap. Either way I say get rid of them now, start fresh with some younger and cheaper kids, which would leave more room in our cap for next years bidathon

Firstly, not all those players were re-signed during Roos tenure!

What is so sacrosanct about using all the draft picks??! Surely it is the resultant list that counts not the method of getting them on to the list.

Consider our list (with known recruits):

-Only 7 players have played more than 100 games. 7 !!!!!

-There are 7 players under 20 years of age, 5 aged 21, 10 aged 22 to 25.

This age/experience profile is totally out of sinc with other AFL lists. So why worry about using pick 40 and 53 in a 'lottery' for more 18 year olds. It also may explains why Roos offered the other players in your post a contract...we need some experience!!!

If a good prospect with experience comes up, who MFC consider offers more than a contracted player I am sure they will have the fortitude to delist that player. Otherwise draft pick 2 and 3 it is!!

We got Clark quickly, and look at how .... oh damn! :):)

Lumumba was held up by the Beames to Lions trade.

Keeping on a couple of fringe/depth players as against taking speculative picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds of a weak draft is NOT the reason why the club is where it is.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
