The Nathan Jones Contract

Featured Replies

I have no mail on this. At all.

And yet I have no concern about Jones re-signing with the MFC at all.

Just as I had no mail on Frawley.

And yet I knew the loyal, country boy was off months before many others here would accept it.

This stuff's pretty obvious IMO.

Unless, of course, you're into dungeons and dragons and playing teenage trading card games. And not therefore accepting the bleeding obvious about the character of certain players.

OMG you have got to be kidding right. Talk about death by a thousand cuts. Please Oh Please can we not do this. If I have to go another 12 months of debate of will he wont he....

What a strange sentiment.

If it turns out Jones left because we cheaped out on the contract offer as opposed to him chasing success, then the club would've officially reached its lowest ebb in terms of stupidity and incompetence.

Perhaps. You still think that Frawley will be at the club next year?

Excuse me?

Would you like to trawl through the Frawley thread and find what you felt so appalling?

I really have no idea why you continue with this abstract obsession with 'loyal country boy' or why you seem to marry this so much with those that are comfortable with players waiting to re-sign, or why you needed to add the patronising bit about Dungeons and Dragons at the end of that post.

I am sure you were looking to get a rise out of someone with all that - I just can't grasp who...

I'm actually looking for leadership from the players in our leadership group. To my mind, Frawley didn't display this at all. Fortunately, I don't expect this was lost on the likes of Paul Roos, despite what he said to the media for much of the year.

Perhaps my standards/expectations are too high for some here in this regard.

And why exactly are you asking me to excuse you? If it makes you feel any better, you're excused.

Yep - on reflection, the dungeons and dragons comment was trite and wholly unrelated to any of the issues discussed on this thread.

I've made it previously in relation to the footy card trading mentality that seems to have been the focus of several posters through the recent trade period when picks have been bandied about for some of our most important players as though everyone's immediately replaceable.

In my view, that mentality can cause supporters to lose sight of what's actually important to building successful football clubs: culture and investment in the people/players who display the right behaviours. There's a reason Simon Goodwin was so impressive to Paul Roos, and why Nev Jetta's been able to re-establish an AFL career.

And there's a reason why we couldn't land Dangerfield and others like him despite apparently throwing loads of cash at him and offering plenty of sweeteners to the Crows too. Some people/players set the culture for a club. Frawley IMO did not - no doubt, he's a top bloke, but he's not a leader - certainly not for this club anyway. Nathan Jones is. And that's why I think he will re-sign sooner than some here think.

Relax all. My mail today is its in the bag. Spoke with GB. There is a riddle for you!

Yeah, ok, all I wanted you to know is that no-one on here seems to give a flying about this 'loyal country boy' meme and that I don't think blokes waiting to sign contracts means they are a bad leader and I have no idea how this played into the whole issue of those that see list management akin to FIFA Manager - which is what I assume you meant with the D&D quip.

The post was all over the place - that's it.

I was about to say it would suck so much if Jones never played finals

then i realized he played in 2 finals in his first season

I do.

I expected leadership and loyalty.

What a [censored] character Frawley turned out to have.

When will it be announced Demoneyes?

Wouldn't say but as per my mate at the GC he said within 3-4 weeks

i'm not disagreeing with you, but there would be a lot of hawks and swans players not paid fair market value and their culture seems strong

it could also be said that most demon players are already paid overs and that didn't help our culture

having said that jonesy deserves fair market value simply because he has earned it

The Hawks and Swans win games, we don't that's the difference.

Jones wants success, said so in his B&F if we can't give him success and pay him at market value he will walk to a stronger club no doubt about it.

Just like going for a gun free agent we are going to pay massive overs for Jones until we look like or are more successful and he deserves to get paid overs, he has been our only gun for many years. 500 or 600k a year won't do it. Dawes gets 500 a year doesn't he? As does Hogan, who is worth a lot more?

Good post - the leaders we want at our club are those that relish the challenge of making our club again. Travis Boak is a great example of this and Chunk is made if the same sort of stuff.

Any goss on Garland and where his contract is up to?

Gee I hope Dawes doesn't get anywhere near $500k a year.

This is where the bottom level clubs suffer, having to pay massive overs to get semi-stars. It then clogs our salary.

We have had massive issues simply paying the minimum of the cap that we have to pay.

We are going to overpay our compromised list - that's how it works when you have an equalised salary cap with an amount you have to pay.

I was watching some Dean Kent highlights last night and in one of them Watts was spooked out of taking a sitter with the feared gorilla tamer Daniel Wells hot on his heels lol.. I wonder what Watts is being paid..

i think if you look back at my posts i suggested fair market value was $600-650K pa for 3-5 years

Probably overs especially when Jamie Bennell gave him a bath!

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
