AFL National Draft 2014 Pick 40

Caleb Daniel please.

Small guys that make it are usually stocky and built like tanks.

Daniel is small and lightly framed. I cannot see him making it.

I don't think he'll be picked up in the ND.

Maybe a rookie, but really he is up against it.

Yeah that Brent Harvey guy is terrible.

it's going to be a boring draft after pick 3 until pick 40.

Toby McLean or Touk Miller are my hopes. Think McLean’s a chance to be there, but Miller should be gone by then.

Im a Miller fan.

Reminds me of the way Daniel Kerr played.

A footballer is a footballer mate, he can play the game pretty bloody well. People put too much emphasis on being tall and strong and athletic, sure they are all great attributes, but you can 100% succeed without them, and I think Caleb Daniel will.

it has to be either Tom Wilkinson or Nathan Drummond. Both tipped in 35-45 range. Pace to burn and put up some impressive numbers. We will still need pace in the mids.

I'm hoping Nakia Cockatoo slips though, however it's highly unlikely.

I'm swewing we Frost cost us so much with our second round pick, particularily considering the Giants traded O'Rourke for so little.

We could have easily been forced to use our second round pick on Stretch but we got lucky. Its swings and round-a-bouts. We got our man, be thankful for that.

Panos - big bodied midfielder that dominated the SANFL????

wouldnt mind possibly looking at Panos. If he isnt picked maybe a cheap find as a rookie ?

I would love Maynard to be there. Has been rated in the 20's in some mock drafts and FWIW his father played for Melb (and Fitzroy?)

The kid barracks for Melbourne to boot.

Pick 20: Greater Western Sydney – Brayden Maynard

Position: Forward

Height: 186cm, Weight: 88kg, DOB: 20/09/1996

Club: Sandringham Dragons

Projected draft range: 20-30

Player comparison: Ryan O’Keefe

Brayden Maynard is a slick utility type that does his best work off the packs with an ability to kick on either side of his body. The hard-nosed, balanced midfielder is somebody that is targeted by opposition teams to shut down, given his ability to quickly set up play and importantly stream forward to goal. He’s been utilised in an array of positions: however, he ultimately looms more of a forward type. However, with increased endurance and fitness, he has the potential to make the move into the midfield, whether permanently or as a rotation. Aside from his brilliant goal kicking, Maynard is an aerial specialist with strong hands in a contest, who also marks strongly around the ground. Although he isn’t a polished kick of the ball (operating at just 60 per cent disposal efficiency), he has a terrific base to work with, allowing a club to mould him into any type of role. He has been impressive so far during the Dragons’ finals campaign, featuring in the best on both occasions.

I have met Brayden a few times as he is the nephew of a very good friend of mine. He is a very impressive young man and the times I have spoken to him he has always spoken extremely highly of the MFC footy department. He said it was by far the toughest interview process he has gone through of any AFL team, and on that one of his fellow team mates Angus Brayshaw also quickly reiterated Brayden's view.

I would love to have him in our jumper, but unfortunately for us, I dont think he will still be there for us at our pick, as he has said several clubs have shown their interest in him with Gold Coast, Collingwood, Richmond & Adelaide telling him they would love to have him if he happens to slip past the mid 20's.

Touk Miller is a good footballer, has a bit of Parker/Sloane about him - albeit a lesser version atm.

But if any player shares the comparison of 'no frills' footballer, then it is Miller.

The guy I am keen on at 40 or 53 is Lucas Webb.

I'm a massive wrap for this kid.

Completely agree! I hope we get Lucas Webb, I think he will be a steal at pick 40.

Then I hope we get Caleb Daniel at pick 53

We would be dreaming if ...

Nakia Cockatoo - 182 cms- likely pick 25-35 ... fast, solid, loves to run

Damian Cavka - 183cms, likely 25-35 - runs and runs, long kick, and gets it 25+ times. Classic ruck rover.

But in reality will aim for ...

Nathan Freeman - 185cms, 19yo,fast, strong, half back turned midfielder. Athletic and ready to go round 1.

Tom Wilkinson - 184cms, on the rise. Started as a HFF. Now a key running mid. Great TAC finals and outshown many others. A steal at 40.

James Rose - 186cms, big bodied SA mid. Played HFF but also rotates as mid. Competitive and skilled.

Matthew Hammelman - 198cm Giant from Qld. Goalkicking key forward. Athletic to play in ruck in future.

Jack Lonie -173cms, energetic small who has the skills and intensity for AFL. Boomer Harvey like but a left footer.

Josh Glenn - 19yo, skilled left foot, wingman. Needs a preseason in the gym but ready to go after year in SANFL

Brett Eddy -193cms- leading goalkicker in SANFL. 23yo, would play 3rd tall in AFL, like Gunston from hawks. Good mark and great shot.

Matt Goodyear -186cm, solid mid again. Accumulates and competes. Smart player who creates opportunities.

Oscar McDonald - 194cms, not sure we need another key back but brotherly connection means we will look at. Great 2nd half and has competitive heart.

Billy Evans - 187cms - half back / mid. Ollie Wines size. Smart. Natural leader. Good carnival but played team role rather than selfish impresser. More likely at pick 53.

If we manage to get Petracca and Brayshaw or take another combo of mids with our first two picks wouldn't mind seeing the club taking a punt on Tyler Keital at Pick 40. Can play the swingman role as CHB, CHF and someone I see who has plenty of upside.

Tyler is a good athlete and represented WA at Nationals in Athletics, no questions in regard to his endurance and agility and has good hands

Well worth the punt at 40 IMO considering we may take mids with Pick 2 & 3 and Stretch under FS

It's a little early, but I would like to see us take Oscar McDonald. If he has the run and coetitive nature of his brother he's worth having.

Toby McLean or Touk Miller are my hopes. Think McLean’s a chance to be there, but Miller should be gone by then.

McLean, Miller......hooooooooo...got a feeling of dejavu there!

Nathan Freeman again??? Could be a bit of confusion there next year!

Thanks for the feedback Oneday. I was hoping to see him sneak through as the phantom drafts seem to have him going from the late teens to the mid-40's, but that's unlikely - bugger!

Judging by the discussion on the other thread, we could do a lot worse than picking up Oscar. Might be the depth we need in the back as a long-term proposition and he seems at least the equal if not better than his brother.

With due acknowledgement to Dee-liscious, I have re-posted the following from his "Oscar McDonald Thread:

Currently doing a number on Peter Wright in the TAC finals. Probably most exciting thing is that he can kick! Last couple of matches he has really increased his draft standing. We would need to get another early third round pick to get him.

Pick 57: Melbourne Oscar McDonald

Position: Key defender/forward

Height: 196 cm, Weight: 88 kg, DOB: 18/03/1996

Club: North Ballarat

Projected draft range 50-rookie

Player comparison: Jackson Trengove

Oscar McDonald is one of the better key defenders I am really bullish about in terms of advancing to the next level. He is tall and athletic, and also picks off numerous forward 50 entries with his tremendous ability to take intercept marks and rebound strongly. Best described as a general in defence, McDonald the younger brother of Melbournes Tom is extremely versatile as a defender, and, unlike most key defenders, he loves to back himself and use the ball by foot. He hits the ball flat and hard, and has a really nice turn of foot, being deceptively quick over his first few steps. The Rebels have also used him as a key forward, and hes shown he can be just as damaging at both ends. He has a fantastic leap, strong hands, a really good work rate and rarely ever goes to ground.

The North Ballarat Rebels gained a top four spot with a narrow two-point win over the Oakleigh Chargers. In a low scoring affair, the Rebels were incredibly accurate having just 10 scoring shots to a mammoth 23 but getting the job done. On the other hand, Oakleigh were terrible in front of goal and will need to address that ahead of their Qualifying Final against Geelong. Oscar McDonald was again the best and pushed his finals credentials while Hugh Beasley was a shining light off half back and Toby McLean exciting up forward. North Ballarat now face Calder in the Qualifying Final while Oakleigh meet Geelong.

BFGN Rising Stars Medal:

5 Oscar McDonald (North Ballarat Rebels)

4 Michael Johnston (North Ballarat Rebels)

3 Hugh Beasley (Oakleigh Chargers)

2 Kade Answerth (Oakleigh Chargers)

1 Toby McLean (Oakleigh Chargers)

The gun: Oscar McDonald

The younger brother of Melbournes Tom, Oscar McDonalds season has seen himself launched into the limelight as a Jackson Trengove-like defender who boasts terrific athleticism, agility, speed, a lovely kick and the ability to threaten when pinch hitting up forward. McDonald has been North Ballarats gun player this year, and arguably their most important. Playing key roles at both ends of the field, he has been a large reason why the Rebels have shot into flag contention in 2014. With a terrific ability to read the play, mixed with a combination of being able to attract and use the ball in possession, his willingness to kick goals at one end and stop them at the other will go a long way to ensuring the Rebels go deep into September.

All, it looks like Oscar Mcdonald has done a Zac Jones and exceeded expectations this year. From a possible draftee, it seems he may be in the 20-30 draft range. The irony is that GWS may select him at pick 23 !!

For pick 40 on current estimates and phantoms, I think we can look at

- Nathan Drummond, Bushrangers, 19yo utility speedster

- Dean Gore, Sth Aust, tough inside mid.

- James Rose, Sth Aust, highly skilled, tall mid/HFF

- Daniel Mckenzie, Oakleigh, athletic tall mid.

- Tom Wilkinson, Sandringham, rapidly improved, pacy wing/HFF

McLean, Miller......hooooooooo...got a feeling of dejavu there!

Hahah, what can I say? I get nostalgic sometimes...

SEN have published Brett Anderson's mock draft from the Inside Footy draft special (which hit the newsstands today):

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
