With the Saints forcing our hand on the Frost/pick 23 decision, what does anyone think about using one of those later picks (40 or 53) for a medium midfielder by the name of Tyler Roos?

AFL biography: Medium midfielder whose athletic traits allow him to continually out work his opposition. Uses the ball very well by foot and has good game sense. Averaged 19.3 disposals, at 69% efficiency in three matches at the under-18 championships. Plays for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup but was eligible under State of Origin rules to play for NSW/ACT. Son of former Fitzroy and Sydney star Paul Roos.

Ryan O'Connor, Sandringham Dragons: "Tyler's a developing midfielder who obviously is the son of Paul and has come to us from outside the Victorian pathway having grown up in New South Wles. He needs to develop some overall power and a change of pace, but his football knowledge is really, really good. He has a really good feel for the game so if he can continue to develop some power I think he's good enough to get an opportunity whether that's this year or he has to come back next year asa 19-year-old. He's improved out of sight since the start of the year, he had some lower back issues before Christmas but ever since he's been back on the track he's just kept improving. In terms of footy smarts and seeing the game, there's definitely something there."

    I think it would be best for young Roos to go to a club where his dad isn't the head coach

    Isn't he under age? Otherwise he would have been a lions Father/Son possibility?

Using the the write-ups, Tyler would be a 'project' player (probably a rookie) and not likely to be pressing for senior selection until well into Roosy's final year as senior coach. In any event, I wouldn't be the least bit concerned by having the pair at Melbourne. I recall quite a few around here having concerns about the Vineys' but there doesn't seem to be any downside to that, and going back to a different era, it worked outstandingly well for Norm and Barass. And just an afterthought, having Tyler on our list might even prolong Roosy's involvement in our Club in some capacity. That wouldn't be a bad thing.

    Totally agree.

    I think Paul Roos would be brutally honest at where Tyler would fit on our list and what areas he would need to improve to get a game. With two pre-seasons under his belt he could be a great addition to our squad in the Simon Goodwin era.

    Agree, but equally, it doesn't mean he's not worth a 3rd or 4th rounder. Not saying we'll take him though.

    The footy knowledge thing strikes me as well. I remember Roos saying around his appointment that Tyler was going through all the film for Melbourne and putting together a list projection. Roos hadn't even taken the job yet.

    He isn't going to push for 2015 selection, but a rookie slot and let him get into an AFL fitness regime, along with his footy knowledge...could be something special.

    If he could be half as good a player as the old man then worth a look. Roos has been such a force as a coach it easy to forget just how good a player he was.

    Would have to be for the recruiters to pick. That said some overlooked father sons have turned out to be very good players. Langford and Kennedy were both available at some stage and now look the goods. Sometimes slow developers who desperate want to make it are more valuable than skilled players who don't.

    Personally I'd expect him to end up with a rookie spot at Sydney or Freo before coming to Melbourne.

    Brayshaw plays in the same TAC Cup side as Paul Roos son Tyler, who is eligible for the draft this year.

    The Sandringham Dragons flanker is an elite runner and seems unlikely to get to the Demons given they may have only three or four national draft picks.

    But Mahoney said the club was well equipped to deal with the conflict should Tyler become available at a pick that appealed.

    We have been through it before with (recruiting boss) Todd Viney and Jack Viney and it is also the same way we go about picking father-son selections, he said.

    We treat them like any other player in the draft pool. If they are highly rated and the player is available at a certain pick, they are the decision you make.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
