AFL involved in Port Adelaide/Essendon Draft Rort

Featured Replies

Honestly, give me the keys to the place for two weeks...

What is going on?

#giverpfcthekeys

Maybe the AFL know whats coming Essendon's way on monday and are trying to help them field a team in 2015...

The AFL is run by an independent commission but it set a precedent last year of taking notice of the clubs who were upset about Melbourne's application for draft assistance because of the fact that we had recently been the subject of a tanking investigation. Now the AFL is colluding with a club that has been involved in at best poor governance over a drugs program that involved injecting its players with thousands of needles. The collusion involves assisting the Bombers (who lost draft picks as part of the sanctions against them) in a substantial way with regard to a "trade" deal that's nothing less than a phony scam.

I can see clubs like Hawthorn and Collingwood up in arms over this.

It doesn't pass the smell test at all, does it? They are desperate to avoid anything in a courtroom. Geez, can't imagine why? Wouldn't be because a courtroom would force the AFL to disclose their behind the scenes dealings with Essendon, would it? Perhaps Andy D. warning them that ASADA was on to them?

We got shat on when the rest of the league ganged up on us over the PP. Time we return the favour to Essendon.

Article says : "Port and Ryder are keen to make it happen, while Essendon can see the advantages."

Cleary it's driven by Port.

Yes, Essendon will have to play their part by terminating Ryders contract, but that hasn't happened yet, so all anger directed at Essendon is unwarranted I would have thought until it happens, if in fact it does.

Seriously, at this stage I would settle for picks 17 and 36 [what ever Ports first 2 picks are] for Ryder, but if this new scenario does play out, and we can get picks 17 and 21 instead, of course I would take it.

But it's a long way off happening.

And I took you for a reasoned person...seriously

17 and 36...for Ryder,,,,,thats larceny

What ever it is theyre smoking up there on the hill you need to move away.

Have Essendon nexed the idea ? I dont know. They could come out and say such . Have they.

Ash.. I , despite much rhetoric, feel for the genuine club supporter, no matter what team they follow, especially when a club goes rogue as yours surely has.

Nothing your club has done /is doing is noble. Despicable comes to mind

Jack Viney

You're suggesting that GWS not bidding a top-three pick for Viney (the only scenario where Viney would not have been available through our second pick) is related in some way to two clubs conspiring to rort the system by manipulating the contract status of players to fabricate 'free' draft picks?

Pull your head in. The anxiety about GWS bidding for Viney for was purely a collective case of MFCSS.

This... this is rorting. Plain and simple rorting.

What do you expect from organisations run by amoral moneygrubbers like David Koch and Paul Little?

Can see why Port and Essendon would just love this. Essendon get two picks inside the top 20, and Port get two players (including Ryder) for the price of pick 17.

So this means any player under contract but having been at a club for 8 years (soon to be 6 if the AFLPA get their way) can now magically be converted into a free agent at the whim of their club if their compensation pick serves them better than a trade would. Especially with the way contracted players are now demanding trades on a whim.

Geez, can't see that being open to rorting AT ALL.

Point 1: if they get a pick directly after their first pick, wouldn't this be third round thanks to exclusion from the first two rounds for their governance issues?

Point 2: if they void the contract, isn't that like 'retirement', then the Mal Michael clause kicks in?

He should be traded as there is a valid contract registered with the AFL.

If this goes ahead, I can see brown stuff flying everywhere. I am more riled abou this than anything I have seen in a while. The competition is dead if this gets up....it is not a competition but a display event for marquee teams and everyone else can just get Fcccked.

The AFL, in all their wisdom, decided to give them an end of first round priority pick. Why? No reason, just because.

Okay, so let me get this straight. What this now means for the league is clubs can cancel a player's contract, convert them into free agents (if they've been there for 8 years), and cough them up to another team in exchange for a compensation pick from the AFL rather than traded.

So, uh... doesn't that mean Collingwood could activate this with Lamumba? Cancel his contract, he becomes a free agent, we sign him without giving anything up, Collingwood get band 3 compo (pick 28ish, rather than Geelong's 35 or whatever).

Obviously there's a few reasons this won't happen (diluting Frawley's compo the obvious one), but surely if the AFL approve this deal it opens the floodgates for all kinds of outrageous draft tampering. Collingwood could even offer to pay us money on the side to put towards Lamumba's contract and thus push up their compensation to a higher band. Or they could do it legitimately if he was a restricted free agent, as they could push up his price and force us to match it, again pushing up their compensation.

This is well and truly muddying the waters.

Would be the same as the AFL fining us then giving us $$ a few months later.

Penalise the Dons then give em picks back later on

Lets hope St Kilda doesnt do this with Riewoldt or Montagna. Pick 1 and 2 for them.

This would be the worst decision the AFL have made in a very long time.

It would an utter disgrace if it comes about.

Exactly, what's to stop them from doing the same thing? It's basically tanking for priority picks in a new disguise: cancelling contracts for better FA compo.

And it will be AFL sanctioned if they're stupid enough to allow this.

Just when you thought you couldn't hate Essendon anymore....

I've got a great idea... Nate Jones says "I want to explore free agency". Melbourne offers him a big contract. We get compensated with band 1 ( age and contract) and get Nate back.

This making up rules [censored] is fun!

Jack Viney gets a crap call and suspension - a poll goes up on the AFL website.

Frawley looking to get us pick 3 as compo - a poll goes up n the AFL website.

AFL allowing two finalists to come up with a dodgy scenario to produce a better result for both teams at the draft, at the expense of the rest of the competition - WHERE'S THE POLL AFL? I'm sure it would be very lop-sided.

Got a feeling Eddie's on the phone right about now.

Yes, my thoughts exactly, we will not be the only ones, unimpressed

Yes, quite spectacular that the only thing about it on the AFL website is a glowing propaganda piece about this "creative" idea. "Thinking outside the box" is the headline. Probably seemed a better headline than "Two finalists collude draft tampering because Essendon are stubborn [censored]."

& essendon look to get 2 picks back for ryder, & then gorringe as well, as a replacement.

the AFL need to keep 2 steps back from the system as it works, they are constantly winding the key to the clockwork themselves, & interfering with the natural order.

the game is becoming a joke of manipulation.

AFL, step back, fix the interchange & the fixture to even things up, make the bottom 8 draft positions a lottery, & just watch proceedings from there.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
