Pick 3 Compensation Confirmed for Frawley

We're in a great position, because if we do go to the draft with the picks, I have faith in this recruiting regime to get it right. While the new FD will provide an environment that will nurture and develop new recruits.

If St. Kildare use pick 1 on McCartin, then we keep pick 3 to use on Petracca. Nothing wrong in not trading our high picks and securing the top two kids in this year's draft! Don't forget, whilst they are developing, we still have Vince, Tyson and Jones plus Viney, Salem and Trengove, each with another full pre-season under their belts. Of course, all this is contingent on knowing St Kildar's plans before we do anything.

We have now pulled the trigger and told them we will take McCartin if they swap pick 1 or take Petracca.

Looking at our picks - 2,3,23, Lumumba(Clark pick), Stretch, Jetta - it makes me wonder how exciting draft night could be if we hold onto them.

I know our first round selections in recent times have been an absolute debacle, and you could argue it is has been a result of the coach, development, team success, injury, poaching and just plain old not good enough.

Besides articles and You Tube, Mcartin, Petracca, Brayshaw and Wright are completely unknown to me. I haven't seen any of them play and therefor cannot write with much conviction.

However, with Melbourne in great hands, should we invest in the draft and build a club around this crop which will give us a crack at a flag in 5 years.

We could follow the Hawthorn of 2004 Roughy/Buddy & Collingwood of 2005 Thomas/Pendlebury. Premierships in 2008 and 2010 respectively

End of the day, as good as a Dangerfield is, he hasn't made Adelaide a top 4 side.

It may mean Roosy doesn't see many wins in his remaining 2 years, but it just may be the formula to win the ultimate prize.

Roos isnt a fan of too many kids, nor I. We will probably keep one pick (2) and trade for best outcome with 3

The team NEEDS to start winning.

Brayshaw and Petracca can help us win games next year.

It just means we might have sustained success in 3 years and on wards.

It ISNT the Roos way to dump kids on the starting line.

You might see who ever we gt as a pick ( if a draftee) later in the season. No immediate or sustained impact in 15. Roos just wont do it that way. ( and good )

I understand investment for future etc but the FD need ppl to play and play straight away with effect..

At least one pick ( 3 at a guess ) will be for a Dyson deal

I heard Smith and Bartlett on SEN talking about fairness and how Melbourne receiving pick 3 is not fair for other clubs not involved in the Frawley move (for example, the Lions now have pick 5 instead of pick 4).

I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. "Fairness?" They couldn't be serious could they?

Is it fair that the big clubs get the blockbuster matches and the best time slots to increase crowds, membership, sponsorship and ultimately profit for their clubs?

Is it fair that Melbourne play Geelong at Kardinia Park while big clubs play them "away" in Melbourne?

Is it fair that Hawthorn doesn't have to give up anything to poach a key defender in the prime of his career from a bottom club?

Is it fair that Sydney have a COLA?

Was it fair that Melbourne get investigated for tanking and that no other club faces the same investigation despite engaging in the same or similar practices?

Was it fair that GWS and Gold Coast get loaded up with first round picks thereby making it harded for bottom clubs to secure the best young talent?

The list goes on and on. I wish the competition was fair because it would be much better for the MFC. Unfortunately, it's not, and we have to live with that.

For once Melbourne comes out better off as a result of the unfair competition yet we have to hear people whinging and complaining about it without mentioning all the other ways in which we have been dudded under the system.

You can hardly say we are better off - we are losing an AA defender in his prime after all. We have lost one of the best full backs in the comp (at his best).

Is that fair? We are being compensated for it, that's all. What have Hawthorn given up? SFA

Correct, pick 3 could be Morton 2.0 *shudder*

This is all well and good 'bb', but to date no one seems to have offered anyone worth the pick.

Maybe it will be a bit of a waiting game, if the Saints trade pick 1 then pick 2 is prime for a KPP. If the Saints don't trade pick 1 then pick 2 is prime to deal with GWS who want Petracca.

I don't think most clubs have the balls to make a crucial decision on their future as we did last year and are prepared to do again so I wouldn't be surprised if we used the picks ourselves, not our preferred option but not so bad all the same.

...by the way for those knocking Frawley's ability, I think he will be a gun at Hawthorn. He will have a lot of support around him and I think we can expect to see him getting some run and carry back into his game.

Yes it's good we got pick 3 for him and maybe he was shellshocked as a MFC defender but he was a very good player and I expect that will show out at his new club.

Just putting it out there before being accused of hindsight next year.

Whilst I'm at it I never thought Col would make an impact at Freo. Think I posted that last year...

Ideally, I would like a draftee (eg, Brayshaw) and an established midfielder (eg, Shiel) and an exchange of picks for either another experienced midfielder or an elite draftee.

In short, pick 2 to GWS for Shiel AND a first round pick and Brayshaw with pick 3. It's the safest hedge in many ways.

It is safe as long as:

1) GWS are happy to do that trade for Shiel; and

2) GWS don't take Brayshaw with pick 3.

I love your optimism Ron, but I just can't see GWS trading another young gun. Bad for the culture. Plus Shiel is a jet.

Thats possiblly so... its still early in this game.

If nothing worthy appears ...we have the picks. I think they are too tempting for some though. No one likes to break too early :)

Perhaps I phrased it poorly - what I meant to say is that for once the unfairness of the competition has worked in our favour. On the open market we would not get pick 3 for Frawley - I think everyone agrees with that.

something like this seems ( for mine ) a highly likely outcome...though id trade 3 not 2....just to be sure :)

IF St Kilda take Petracca with pick 1, why would GWS want picks 2 or 3? Trading Shiel for another tall?

I don't think so.

Couldnt disagree with you more and Roos has stated that he believes the drafted kids are the great unknown and doesn't like relying them.

This is where we need our seniors to perform. You don't hear of Hawks and Swans talking about how a draft pick will come in and win us games yet we expect big things from Hogan and first year draft picks.

What we need is our 25 plus footballers to be stars and these kids come along to be bit player cameos. Not rely on them to pull us out of our misery

If only we had the luxury of 25 year old stars!

I was merely saying they can "help" - Both Brayshaw and Petracca have size. 187cm and 86kg / 92kg respectively. Different to the Watts/Morton/Toumpas/Trengove/Scully etc etc

Agree in principle however we would be expecting big things of them in years two and three. Having said that however, l would not be surprised if both these kids (Petracca and Brayshaw) didn't have an immediate impact (a la Ollie Wines) as they both have mature bodies, coupled with the right mindset and A+ skills!

We don't and I may revise my "25" but I fully expect Roos to trade 2 or 3 for something established ( if he can) as he expected the lift last year to come from Tyson, Cross and Vince - not from Salem and JKH.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
